Decide whether the word expresses similarities or
differences.
1. Unlike
2. Similarly

(15 minutes) named as Your text sounds similar. The teacher will provide
each group one selection to spot the similarities and
differences mentioned in the text..
Group Standards:
The groups must arrange their seats in a circular
manner.
The groups must listen to the instructions of the
teacher.

(5 minutes) the lesson. The teacher will utilize the following questions:
a. What have you observed on the lives of the people
before pandemic? How about during pandemic?
b. Can you cite any similar symptoms of a person with
COVID-19 and a person with a mild flu?
4. Abstraction The teacher will discuss the definition of comparing and
(10 minutes) contrasting and how it is important to compare and contrast
one’s belief/opinion presented in materials or selections.
Discussion will be done through a Power Point presentation.
The presentation will contain the following:
COMPARE AND CONTRAST
Comparing is showing the similarities while contrasting is
showing differences between two things that are related in
some way.
For example, you wouldn't compare/contrast reading a
book to driving a car, but you would compare reading a book
to reading with an e-reader.
In comparing and contrasting, you are going to analyze and
determine the differences and similarities between the two
objects, ideas, or things.
Importance of Comparing and Contrasting
The ability to compare and contrast is an important skill.
1. Distinguish the similarities and differences using transition
words
2. Understand the purpose of the writer/author of certain
selections
3. Noting the similarities and differences in ideas leads to the
abilities to generalize, categorize, sort, evaluate, and
understand new information.
4. Make variations in stating your opinion or own belief about
a certain text.
In expressing comparison and contrast, you will use
Transition words.
Comparison words signal that the author is pointing out a
similarity between two subjects. They tell you that the second
idea is like the first one in some way.
Look over the following comparison words:
-Also
-like
-in the same way
-similarly
-Likewise
-equally
-alike
-just as
-in like manner
-in a similar way
Contrast words signal a change in the direction of the
writer’s thought. They tell you that the author is pointing out a
difference between two subjects or statements.
Look over the following contrast words.
-But
-yet
-variation
-conversely
-However
-differ
-on the contrary
-otherwise
-In contrast
-on the other hand
Another way of expressing comparison and contrast is by
using graphic organizers: Some of the examples are:
Used to analyze similarities and differences between two
things (people, places, events, ideas, etc.) by placing
individual characteristics in either the left or right sections,
and common characteristics within the overlapping section.
ITEM 1 ITEM 2
Used to analyze similarities and differences between two
things (people, places, events, ideas, etc.), by placing
individual characteristics in either the left or right
sections.
Used to show similarities and differences between two things
(people, places, events, etc
Then, the teacher will select students to answer the
questions:
1. How does knowing comparison and contrast help you?
2. Why is it important to know the right transition signals to
use?
5. Application The teacher will present a poem and let the students make
(10 minutes) their own opinion by comparing and contrasting.
Directions: Read the short poem and in a 1/2 sheet of paper,
select two (2) from the comparison words about the things
that you agree in the poem and select one (1) from the
contrast words about the things that you don’t agree with.
The Phone
by Leslie Tajale
This tool has a lot of use
There are many options to choose
Only this can call someone from afar
Without even needing to drive a car
We played games endlessly
We had so much fun, really
But, I skipped two meals already
The phone must be taken easy
Example:
Just like the writer, I believe the phone has a lot of options to
choose
But, I disagree that only cellphone can call someone from
afar
IV. EVALUATION
1. Assessment The teacher will present new set of selection and let the
(5 minutes) students label the diagram. This will be presented in a
powerpoint presentation and select responses from students.
Agoyy and Mafrisoka were best friends, they liked to do
everything together. Agoyy loved horseback riding and so did
Mafrisoka. Agoyy loved swimming, and although Mafrisoka
did not know how to swim she loved the water. Agoyy
enjoyed vacationing in tropic areas while
Mafrisoka liked arctic zones.
V. ENRICHMENT & HOME DELIGHT
1. Assignment The teacher and students will agree to the make a task as
instructed below.
In a 1/2 sheet of paper, Decide if you agree or disagree with
this statement using the transition words either comparison or
contrast words.
