Education has numerous – and profound – consequences for individuals and society.

As many studies
have documented, education is one of the best predictors of “who gets ahead.” Better-educated
workers experience higher lifetime earnings, less unemployment, and work longer. Higher education is
also associated with longer life expectancy, improved health, reduced participation in crime, and greater
civic participation. These correlations have been known for a long time. A substantial body of recent
research concludes that these relationships reflect, at least in part, causal influences of schooling on
individual outcomes. All of these factors are greatly influenced by the schooling stage of life of an
individual. But sometimes this fact is neglected by some individuals even though they already know
about it. Most of the time the neglect of knowledge roots in fear of the difficulty of learning and laziness
in studying. This seems to be the case in some students of Ternate West National High School- San Juan
Extension when it comes to literacy and numeracy. By definition, literacy is the set of skills that allows an
individual to engage fully in society and in learning, through the different forms of language, and the
range of texts, that society values and finds useful. Numeracy means understanding how math is used in
the real world and being able to apply it to make the best possible decisions. With a population of 250
students, it seems that one of the major problems is the lack of reading and writing skills. A lot of
students are not focused on their studies in reading and writing. Some even show uninterested and just
do what they want that is irrelevant to the school. This is the very reason we are conducting this
research to show awareness to students who cannot see the impact of literacy and numeracy on their
success and stability in the future.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Reading comprehension and problem-solving skills are one of the fundamental sets of skills that are
being taught in schools. though fundamental in nature, reading comprehension and problem-solving
skills are the most important skills needs to learn by an individual that is foundational to successful
living, learning, and working in today’s society. This is what some of the students are unable to see; yet
they just either ignore it or take it for granted. Being unable to address this problem as early as now will
have a great negative impact on the lives of students who feign ignorance in literacy and numeracy.
