Exponents Lesson Plan

This lesson plan is for a 6th grade math class on exponents. It includes 5 parts: 1) An introduction reviewing prior knowledge of exponents through a chart activity. 2) Stating the objectives of working with integer exponents. 3) Teacher instruction presenting tasks and examples through notes and a warm-up. 4) Guided practice with students completing charts on exponent operations while watching videos. 5) Independent practice with an exponent game and homework reviewing for a quiz. The plan aims to have students demonstrate an 80% understanding of exponents on the quiz.

Six Point Lesson Plan for UNCW

Subject: Math
Topic or Unit of Study: Exponents
Grade/Level: th Grade
Summary:
NC.8.EE.1 Develop and apply the properties of integer exponents to generate equivalent
numerical expressions. (Apply)

I. Focus and Review (Establish Prior Knowledge)

Activities and Setting: Classroom- Fill out exponent chart

Materials and Time: 10 minutes to fill out exponent chart. 5 minutes to discuss the
properties of an exponent.

II. Statement (Inform) of Objectives

Activities and Setting: Discuss as a class what they put on their exponent chart.
(Lesson opener). After discussing, I will then introduce the objectives of the lesson
and begin lecture. I will pass out fill in the blank notes to each student to help them
follow along during lecture. The lecture will be a white board.

Materials and Time: (Monday) Discussing as a class what the properties of

exponents are. They should remember some from previous grades.

Review that every number to the first power is the number

Any number to the zero power is one
When a fraction contains an exponent, multiply the numerator and the denominator
by the same power.
You can only add and subtract when there at like terms.

As a class review example problems.

III. Teacher Input (Present Tasks, Information, and Guidelines)

Activities and Setting: The class will start off with a warm-up.

Materials and Time: Warm-up- 10 Minutes using the white board, 5 Minutes for
students to work individually on writing numbers in the simplest form, then writing
the definitions of the characteristics of exponents.

IV. Guided Practice (Elicit Performance)

Activities and Setting: After the class does the warm-up we will then begin the class
activity. The lesson begins with products of powers, starting with a video. Each
student will receive a chart that contains an expression they will then need to fill it
out after we practice writing expressions using exponents and without exponents.
We will then move into the second section: of quotient of powers, and a video. The
students will receive another chart just like the products of powers chart. Then we
will go over negative and zero exponents, once lesson is taught, play the videos. We
will review the power rule. We then will practice real world examples.

Materials and Time: (Tuesday) 40 minutes to do the class activity, students will
need a chart, a pencil, and a class computer. I will use the overhead for any
information.

V. Independent Practice—Seatwork & Homework (Retain & Transfer)

Activities and Setting: Then at the end of the lecture and with the completion of
their worksheets, students will play one of the three games.

Pirate Game
Exponent Otter Game
Rags to Riches

Materials and Time: 30 minutes to do the class activity, students will need a class
computer. I will use the overhead for any information. Their homework is to review
for the quiz the following day.

VI. Closure (Plans for Maintenance)

Activities and Setting: In the beginning of class will have a review of the vocabulary
and rules. This will allow me to see each student process of learning the curriculum.
We will discuss and I will ask for any last minute questions. I will then have a short
Quiz (Assessment) - 12 questions, 2 are written questions from given information, 5
are writing numbers without exponents and the last 3 are real world questions and
the last 5 will be completing an exponent chart.

Materials and Time: 20 minutes to go over the lesson (review) and for anyone to ask
any last minute questions. 30 minutes to take quiz that I will pass out on a hand out.

Standards and Assessment

Standards: My goal is to have everyone making an 80% or higher on the quiz. If a
student does not make a passing score, I will work more one on one with that student and
provide more resources to help the student better understand.

Assessment/Rubrics: The quiz and exponent sheet chart will be my assessment for
the students.
