Installing the Reef platform

Receiving, installing, cabling and connecting the Reef to power are described here.

• Receiving and unpacking the Reef

• Installing the Reef
• Cabling the Reef
• Connecting the Reef to power

Receiving and unpacking the Reef

The Reef platform comes in a specially designed shipping box that ensures its safety during shipping and
handling. To avoid damaging the Reef platform, unpack it carefully.

The product typically ships as follows:

• Pre-assembled - Chassis, LED controller board, and Front Panel with integrated cooling fans
• Power supply units
• RF Line cards
• Blank panels for unpopulated slots
• Cabling and accessories
The Reef components that are received should be carefully checked as follows:
1. As you unpack your unit, inspect the shipping container and equipment for damage. Save the shipping
material for future use.
2. If the container or the Reef platform is damaged, notify both the freight carrier and Harmonic, Inc. To
protect yourself from potential injury and to protect the Reef platform from further damage, do not
perform any operational tests if the equipment appears to be damaged.
3. Verify that the power supplies (one or two) and the installed modules are secure in their slots and the
anchor screws of each module are firmly tightened.
NOTE: If you ordered a Reef platform with a DC power supply, the platform is shipped with
the mating connector for the DC inlet already plugged in.

13
Chapter 4: Installing the Reef platform

Installing the Reef

Installation guidelines and installing the Reef in the rack are described here.

Installation Guidelines
Follow these installation guidelines carefully.
• To prevent bodily injury when mounting or servicing this platform, you must take special precautions
to ensure that the system remains safe and stable. Read the following guidelines and the Safety and
regulatory compliance information section to assure your safety. Take special note of all warning labels
attached to the hardware.
• The Reef is designed for indoor/controlled environment installation and should be used in restricted
access locations only.
• The rack, with an open front and top and with ventilation slots at the back, should enable free flow of
air into the air conditioning system intake.
• The chassis comes with blank panels to cover any unused line card slots. These MUST be used to
block all unused line-card slots, to ensure optimal air flow and cooling.

Installing the Reef chassis in the rack

The Reef platform is shipped with the front-panel and LED controller already mounted.
Install the platform in the rack as you would any other chassis, and secure its mounting brackets to the
rack using the external screws.

Installing the power supply units

1. Slide each power supply unit into its compartment, with the captive tightening screw located on the
right, and the power socket located on the left.
2. Once the module is fully inserted, secure it in place using a flat screwdriver to tighten the captive
screw.

Installing the RF line-cards

1. Slide each of the line-cards into its slot, with the QSFP cage located on the right-hand side.
2. Towards the end of the insertion path into the slot, you will sense some slight resistance when the
card’s connector meets the chassis mid-plane. Push gently until the card is fully inserted and its face-
plate is flush with the chassis.
3. Once the card is fully inserted, secure it in place using the two captive Allen screws. Tighten the
screws using a 7/32 inch Allen wrench.

Cabling the Reef

Grounding and cabling the Reef are described here.

Grounding the Reef chassis

The Reef platform requires sufficient earth grounding to operate properly and to meet safety regulations.
Grounding also prevents damage from voltage surges or lightning strikes. Always make sure you are
meeting national and local electrical codes when grounding the Reef platform. It is recommended to use

14
Cabling the Reef

a 12-gauge or higher ground wire for grounding the Reef platform chassis to the rack. Ground the Reef
platform to the rack at the chassis grounding lug, indicated below.

Line-Card Cabling
Cabling the line-card comprises two steps:
1. GbE Network Connectivity: Connecting the QSFP breakout cable
2. RF Connectivity: Connecting the UCH RF cabling harness

Connecting the QSFP breakout cable

• Each line-card features a standard QSFP+ cage, designed to host a QSFP+ breakout cable for
connectivity to DAAS/CIN.
• Only Harmonic-approved QSFP+ breakout cables may be used. These cables feature 2 x 10G
breakout channels, terminated by built-in SFP+ 10G transceivers that connect to the DAAS/CIN. The
two 10G links of the QSFP breakout cables are marked 1 and 2 to clarify their association with the
matching RPDs.
• Several optional types of QSFP breakout cables are available, which differ by their length and internal
connectivity. See the "Ordering information" section for more details.
IMPORTANT: QSFP transceivers are active laser devices! Observe laser safety
instructions when handling them.

17 Reef Installation Guide

Chapter 5
Initial configuration

Configuring the Reef includes the following steps:

1. Determining RPD MAC addresses based on the chassis label
2. Configuring the RPD modules
3. Fine-tuning the RF configuration of individual RPDs

Step 1: Determining RPD MAC addresses based on the chassis label

The Reef is designed so that MAC addresses for all RPDs in the chassis are derived from the "Chassis
base MAC address" stamped in the chassis non-volatile memory. The chassis base MAC address is
specified in the chassis label that is attached to the rack-mounting bracket of the chassis, as shown in the
picture below. The MAC address is encoded into the QR code on the label.

Use the following steps to determine the MAC addresses of all RPDs in the Reef chassis:
1. Use a QR code reader to read the chassis label. The chassis base MAC address is listed immediately
following the prefix "$DM" (short for Device MAC), and always ends with :00. For example,
aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:00
2. Determine the MAC addresses of individual RPDs, based on the chassis base MAC address and the
table below.
Consider a chassis with the base MAC address aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:00. RPD MAC addresses (in Hex
notation) will be:

18
Slot # RPD#1 MAC address RPD#2 MAC address
1 aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:10 aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:18
2 aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:20 aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:28
3 aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:30 aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:38
4 aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:40 aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:48
5 aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:50 aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:58
6 aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:60 aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:68
7 aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:70 aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:78
8 aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:80 aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:88
9 aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:90 aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:98

Step 2: Configuring the Reef RPD modules

Similar to other Harmonic R-PHY device types, Reef RPDs receive their full configuration over GCP
interface from the CableOS core, vCMTS core, or Primary GCP core that controls the entire R-PHY
system. This configuration is set remotely via the core’s CLI. For more details on how to configure the
RPDs, refer to the CableOS Core CLI Reference Guide, and the CableOS Getting Started Guide.
When a Reef line-card is initialized, its two RPDs communicate with the chassis and read the Chassis
base MAC address. In addition, each RPD is able to determine the slot number in which it is seated, and
its identification within the line-card (RPD#1 or RPD#2).
Based on this information, the RPD determines its own MAC address, and sends a DHCP request to
the network via the QSFP interface. Assuming that this MAC address was already configured into the
CableOS vCMTS core meant to control this RPD, the RPD will then receive a DHCP response message,
which will include the IP settings that it should use for obtaining its complete configuration from the core.

Step 3: Fine-tuning the RF configuration of individual RPDs

The Reef RPD software is designed so that it stores RF fine-tuning parameters in the Reef chassis non-
volatile memory. These parameters are typically determined based on the specific characteristics of the
RF plant segment that is fed by a given RPD.
If a line-card fails and needs to be replaced, the replacement card will read the fine-tuning parameters
from the chassis as part of its boot-up sequence, and will automatically apply them to restore the required
RF settings.
To set the RF fine-tuning parameters for an RPD, follow these steps:
1. Use an SSH client to connect to the RPD CLI, as explained in the CableOS RPD CLI Reference
Guide.
2. Use the following commands to set the desired attributes:
◦ reef rf-config-adjustments-set ds-attenuation-adjust
Sets the Reef RPD RF downstream attenuation adjustment parameter that is stored in the Reef
Chassis EEPROM.
◦ reef rf-config-adjustments-set ds-tilt-adjust
Sets the Reef RPD RF downstream tilt adjustment parameter that is stored in the Reef Chassis
EEPROM.

19 Reef Installation Guide

Chapter 5: Initial configuration

◦ reef rf-config-adjustments-set us-power-adjust

Sets the Reef RPD RF upstream expected power adjustment parameter that is stored in the Reef
Chassis EEPROM.
3. If required, use the following command to view the current settings of RF fine-tuning attributes:
◦ show reef rf-config-adjustments
Displays all the Reef-specific RPD RF adjustment parameters that are stored in the Reef Chassis
EEPROM.

Troubleshooting and maintenance

Troubleshooting and maintenance procedures are provided here.

• Front-panel LED indications

• Replacing the front panel
• Replacing a power supply unit (PSU)
• Replacing an RF line-card
• Troubleshooting RPD communication problems with the chassis

Front-panel LED indications

The status of the LEDs on the front panel and the indicated operating condition are described here.

LED Indication Operating Condition

Fans Solid Green All fans operating normally
Solid Red At least one fan is faulty
PS1, PS2 Off PSU not installed
Solid Green PSU OK
Solid Red PSU Error – bad output
voltage
Line Card (x9) Off Line-card not installed
Solid Green Both RPDs OK
Blinking Green At least one RPD is initializing
Solid Red At least one RPD is in Error
state

Replacing the front panel

The front panel, including all four integrated fans, must be replaced when a red cooling fan LED is
displayed, or when the Reef sends an alarm notification of increased temperature for one or more faulty
fans to the central monitoring system.
1. Ensure that the required replacement panel is easily available.

21
Chapter 6: Troubleshooting and maintenance

NOTE: The front panel is hot-swappable while the unit is in operation but the process
should be completed within 1 minute.
2. Use a cross-head screwdriver to unscrew the 4 fastening screws holding the front panel.
3. Remove the front panel from the chassis.
4. Slide in the replacement panel and tighten the fastening screws.
5. Ensure that the new fans become operational and relevant LEDs turn to green.

Replacing a power supply unit (PSU)

Replacing a power supply unit (PSU) is described here.
IMPORTANT: It is very important that all safety precautions and procedures are followed
during installation, usage, or maintenance. Before carrying out any procedures, refer to the
Safety and regulatory compliance information section.
NOTE: PSUs are redundant and hot-swappable while the unit is in operation.

1. Disconnect the AC or DC power feed into the PSU. The power feed into the PSU must be
disconnected before any work is carried out on the unit.
2. Undo the holding screw.
3. Extract the PSU from its slot.
4. Insert the replacement PSU.
5. Tighten the holding screw.
6. Reconnect the power.
7. Verify that the matching PSU LED on the front panel turns to green.

Replacing an RF line-card
The hot-swap design of the Reef platform allows for line-card replacement while the device is in
operation. The device can remain powered-on, configured, and connected to all interfaces throughout the
replacement process.
First, remove the current line-card from the chassis:
1. Release the tightening screw of the UCH6 RF cabling harness.
2. Disconnect the connector block from the card. Let the harness rest in a position where it will not
interfere with the line-card’s release.
3. Pull the QSFP transceiver from its socket. Let it rest in a position where it will not interfere with the
line-card’s release.
4. Use a 7/32 inch Allen wrench to release the two tightening screws on the right and left sides of the
line-card.
5. Hold the two captive Allen screws, and carefully slide the card from the chassis until it is fully
extracted. Wrap the card in an electrostatic protective bag, and put aside.
Then, mount the replacement card in the chassis:
1. Unpack the replacement card and carefully remove from its electrostatic protective bag.
2. Align the card with the empty slot so that the QSFP socket is on the right-hand side. Carefully push the
card into the slot until fully inserted.

22
Troubleshooting RPD communication problems with the chassis

NOTE: Towards the end of the insertion path, you should expect slightly increased
resistance when the card’s connector meets the chassis mid-plane. This is normal. If
you feel unreasonable resistance blocking the card from being fully inserted, stop and
check. Attempting to force the card may result in damage to the line-card, chassis, or
both.
3. Use a 7/32 inch Allen wrench to carefully tighten the two screws. To avoid damage to the screws or the
chassis, be careful not to apply excessive torque to the screws.
4. Insert the QSFP transceiver into its socket. Make sure that it is fully inserted and locked in place.
5. Align the UCH6 block connector with its matching connector on the card, and slide it in until it is fully
inserted.
6. Tighten the tightening screw to secure the harness in place.

Troubleshooting RPD communication problems with the

chassis
Troubleshooting communication issues between RPDs and the Reef chassis is described here.
During normal operation, RPDs routinely monitor their ability to communicate with the Reef chassis.
If an RPD senses that it has lost communication with the chassis, it will forward a GCP event via its QSFP
network interface to the vCMTS core. The event will state: "No communication to chassis". At the same
time, the LED controller will sense the communication issue and set the matching line-card LED to red.
To troubleshoot such communication problems, you can invoke the RPD CLI and use the following
commands:
• show reef chassis-info
Displays general Reef chassis information such as the base chassis MAC address, MAC range, PN
and SN.
• show reef chassis-info verbose
Displays detailed Reef chassis information such as Reef Controller board firmware versions,
temperature, power supply status, front panel and fan status, and the overall status summary of all
SLOTs/RPDs in the chassis.
NOTE: An RPD that loses communication with the chassis can still continue to operate
normally: transmit, receive and process signals via its QSFP and RF interfaces, and retain
service to end customers. However, if the RPD is rebooted before the communication
problem is resolved, it will not be able to obtain its IP settings and service configuration
from the core. Service from this RPD will therefore not be restored.

EU RoHS

EU RoHS
Review the European Union’s Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive.
In July 2006, the European Union’s (EU) Directive (2002/95/EC) on the Restriction of the use of certain
Hazardous Substances (RoHS) in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) went into effect, and in July,
2011, the European Union’s RoHS Recast Directive (2011/65/EU) also known as RoHS II entered into
force.
Harmonic understands the environmental risks associated with the substances covered by the RoHS
Directive and has committed to eliminating or reducing the use of these, as well as other environmentally
sensitive substances in our products. Harmonic also continues to comply with the requirements under
RoHS II.
For more information, please visit EU RoHS directive page at official EU website.

Restricted substance statement

Harmonic products contain less than the permitted limits for the six restricted substances except where
exemptions published in the RoHS2 Directive are applicable. This statement is based on vendor-supplied
analysis or material certifications, and/or lab test results of the component raw materials used in the
manufacture of Harmonic products.
Table B-1: Restricted substances

Restricted substance Permitted limit

Cadmium (Cd) < 0.01%
Homogeneous material definition as per the EU
Directive.

Lead (Pb) < 0.1%

Chromium (VI) (Cr (VI)) < 0.1%
Mercury (Hg) < 0.1%
Polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) < 0.1%
Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) < 0.1%

EU REACH
REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and restriction of Chemicals) (EC 1907/2006) is a
European Union regulation on chemicals and their safe use which came into force in June, 2007.
Harmonic supports the basic aim of REACH in improving the protection of human health and environment
through the better and earlier identification of intrinsic properties of chemical substances. Harmonic
products are considered "articles" under REACH; therefore, we are required to provide recipients of our
products with information on Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC) present in concentration above
0.1% (w/w).

China RoHS
Review China's Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive.
China's regulation on restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances commonly (China RoHS), is
applicable to all Electronic and Information Products (EIPs) and parts sold in China after March 01, 2007.
China RoHS regulation restricts the use of the same six substances as the European Union’s ROHS, but
has requirements for product labeling and regulated substance information disclosure.
Harmonic complies with China RoHS Phase I for labeling and information disclosure requirements and
continues to monitor new developments in China RoHS Phase II towards substance restriction and
certification program.

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)

Review the European Union’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive.
European Parliament and the Council of the European Union’s WEEE Directive (2002/96/EC) came into
force on August, 2005 and were more recently amended in July, 2012. This directive encourages the
reuse, recycling, and recovery of WEEE and to improve the environmental performance of all operators
involved in the life cycle of electrical and electronic equipment, especially those dealing with WEEE.
Harmonic ensures that all requirements for registration, reporting, design and data tracking are complied
with to meet the objectives of the WEEE directive.
