ABSTRACTION

THE IMPACTS OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY

(ICT)
I. Impacts of ICT to Relationships
A. Negative Effects

1. It can lead to isolation

The Internet is an electronic drug that has a tendency to pull us away from the
physical world. We may appreciate online connections utilizing social media sites but
the difference between these sorts of interactions with individuals within the physical
world is clearly vast.
There’s nothing wrong with using social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and the
likes. The problem only begins if we will start longing for more affection and attention
from these online relationships than the relationships that we have in the real world.
Remember that words like “LOL,” and “ROTF,” cannot substitute the joy of hearing
your friend or loved one’s real laugh.
2. It can lead to loss of etiquette
The Internet is excellent in transferring information efficiently but is not that
effective to use in satisfying connections and addressing emotionally sensitive
concerns. Individuals tend to delay replying emails when they do not have what they
consider to be great answers or when they need to avoid whatever obligation the e-
mail demands of them. It's far simpler to disregard an e-mail sender's request than a
request from somebody made in person since an email sender's hope to get a
response or disappointment in not receiving one remains mostly invisible.
The “emotional invisibility” on the Internet gives some of its users the courage to
say things that they would never say to people in person. It is because the person to
whom they are saying it is not physically present to display their emotional reaction.
B. Positive Effects
1. It promotes social cohesion
You can find a long-lost friend, converse with a relative who is on another side of the
globe, and find more friends with the help of a social networking site. Others can also
console or provide emotional support to someone regardless of the distance that
separates them physically.

2. It provides a new avenue for expression and information dissemination

Feelings and ideas that are normally suppressed, ranging from political and intellectual
matters up to trivial ones, can be vented out on websites. Through technology, the
opinion of the people with regards to government policies can be heard easily, and

10
any abuse of authority can be easily exposed in just a snap. It also promotes
collaboration and validation of information through scholarly discussion boards or
online forums.
II. Impacts of ICT to Communication
One of the dramatic changes that have taken place in the field of communications is
the rapid spread of mobile telephone. By 2010, mobile telephone density in developing
countries had reached an astounding two-thirds of the population compared to less
than 1% before the advent of mobile networks. This trend toward using mobile phones
since 2010 continues. Listed below are other trends that have emerged since 2010:
a. Today, mobile phones perform multiple other functions. It is now a digital device
that can serve as a radio, a camera, a flashlight, an alarm clock, an audio and video
player, and much more.
b. The spread of 3G connection and available Wi-Fi connections have increased the
use of Internet access through mobile phones. It is now possible to access one’s e-
mail address, do online banking, and video chat using a handheld device.
c. The cost of mobile handsets and mobile phone utilization has been falling. Although
affordability remains a challenge in low-income countries, mobile phones today are
cheapest than it has ever been.
d. The widespread availability and use of smartphones have led to the creation of new
mobile applications or small computer programs that allow mobile devices to substitute
personal computers.
e. Tablet computers have moreover developed with built-in capacities of personal
computers in portable gadgets. As with smartphones, the use of tablet and computers
has increased following its adoption of government and international agencies, which
sees it as an important development tool.

III. Impacts of ICT to Content

Goals like literacy, poverty reduction and sustainable development are carried out
through meaningful usage and deployment of ICT. The importance of ICT is tied to its
capacity to be integrated into the delivery of conventional services like education,
business, and employment. Transformation of these services is reflected through the
installation of e- learning, e-business, and e-employment systems in various
institutions and companies.
IV. Impacts of ICT to Human Capacity
It is vital to obtain all the fundamental skills and information related to ICT in order
to understand, take part effectively in, and benefit completely from ICT and the
information economy. ICT, when integrated into education and used to train the
different sectors of our society, will promote e-literacy skills and boost productivity.
