Sprinkler heads shall be of quartzoid bulb type with bulb, valve assembly yoke and the
deflector. The sprinklers shall be of approved make and type.
2.2 Types
Spray Pattern: The spray type sprinkler shall produce a hemispherical discharge below the
plane of the deflector.
Ceiling (flush) Pattern: These shall be designed for use with concealed pipe work. These
shall be installed pendant with plate or base flush to the ceiling with below the ceiling.
Side Wall Sprinklers: These shall be designed for installation along with the walls of room
close to the ceiling. The discharge pattern shall be similar to one quarter of sphere with a
small proportion discharging on the wall behind the sprinklers.
2.3 Constructions
Bulb: Bulb shall be made of corrosion free material strong enough to withstand any water
pressure like to occur in the system. The bulb shall shatter when the temperature of the
surrounding air reaches a predetermined level.
Valve Assembly: Water passage of the sprinkler shall be closed by a valve assembly of
flexible construction. The valve assembly shall be held in position by the quartzoid bulb. The
assembly be stable and shall withstand pressure surges or external vibration without
displacement.
Yoke: The yoke shall be made of high quality gun metal. The arms of yoke shall be so
designed as to avoid interference with discharge of water from the deflector. The sprinkler
body shall be coated with an approved anti-corrosive treatment if the same is to used in
corrosive conditions.
Deflector: Te deflector shall be suitable for either upright or pendant erection. The deflector
shall be designed to give an even distribution of water over the area protected by each
sprinkler.
a. Colour Code
The following colour code shall be adopted for classification of sprinkler according to nominal
temperature ratings
The following sizes of sprinklers shall be selected for various classes or hazards.
The following spare sprinklers shall be supplied along with the system:
d. Temperature Rating
For normal conditions in temperature climates rating of 68/74°C shall be used. However, the
temperature rating shall be as closed as possible to, but not less than 30°C above the
highest anticipated temperature conditions.
Pipes for Wet Riser system shall be of black steel conforming to IS: 1239 (Heavy Class).
Fittings for black steel pipes shall be malleable iron suitable for welding or approved type
cast iron fittings and tapered screwed threads.
Jointing: Joint for black steel pipes and fittings shall be metal to metal tapered thread or
welded joints. A small amount of red lead may be used for lubrication and rust prevention in
threaded joints.
Joints between C.I. or black steel pipes, valves and other appurtenances, pumps etc. shall
be made with C.I. or M.S. flanges with appropriate number of bolts. Flanged joints shall be
made with 3 mm thick insertion rubber gasket.
Pipes Protection
a. All pipes above ground and in exposed locations shall be painted with one coat of
red oxide primer and to or more coats of synthetic enamel paint of approved shade.
b. Pipes in chase or buried underground shall be painted with two coats of hot
bitumen, wrapped with bituminised hessian cloth and finished with one coat of hot
bitumen paint or with fibre glass tissue paper.
Pipe Supports: All pipes shall be adequately supported from ceiling or walls from existing
inserts by structural clamps fabricated from M.S. structural e.g. rods, channels, angles, and
flats. All clamps shall be painted with one coat of red and two coats of black enamel paint.
Where inserts are not provided, the contractor shall provide anchor fasteners.
Orifice Flanges: Contractor shall provide orifice flanges fabricated from 6 mm thick
stainless steel plates on the branch lines feeding different zones/floors so as to allow
required flow of water at 3.5 kg/sq.cm. pressure. The contractor shall furnish design for
these orifice flanges.
Valves: Sluice valves of size 80 mm and above shall be double flanged cast iron conforming
to IS: 780.
Check valve shall be of cast iron double flanged conforming to IS: 5312.
Valves on pipes 65 mm and below shall be heavy pattern gunmetal valves with cast iron
wheel seat tested to 20 kg/sq.cm. pressure. Valve shall conform to IS: 778.
Air Valves: 25 mm dia screwed inlet cast iron single action air valves on all high points in
the system or as shown on drawings.
Drain Valves: 50 mm dia black steel pipe conforming to IS: 1239 heavy class with 50 mm
gunmetal full way valve for draining and water in the system in low pockets.
i. One man stop valve of full way pattern with gunmetal pointer to indicate where
open/shut.
ii. One automatic alarm valve, fitted with handle and cover.
iii. One hydraulic alarm motor and going for soundings a continuous alarm upon
outbreak of fire.
iv. One combined waste and testing valve including 5 mtr. of tuling and fittings.
vi. Strainer
Burden type pressure gauges conforming to IS/BS specifications shall be provided at the
following locations.
Above ground piping: All above ground piping shall be installed on suitable to pipe
hangers/supports as required. The hangers be made of M.S. angles, channels etc. and
painted to the required finish (with suitable synthetic enamel paint). The spacing of piping
supports shall be as follows:
i. 20 mm to 32 mm dia 2 mtr.
ii. 40 mm to 65 mm dia 2 mtr.
iii. 65 mm to 100 mm dia 1.75 mtr.
iv. Above 150 mm dia 1.50 mtr.
Piping shall be so installed that the system can be thoroughly drained. All the pipes shall be
arranged to drain to the installation drain valve. In case of basement and other areas where
the pipe work is below the installation drain, valve/auxiliary valves of the following sizes shall
be provided.
Piping shall be screwed type upto 50 mm dia. Welding of joints will be allowed for pipes of
50 mm or larger diameters.
The piping shall be pressure tested by the hydrostatic method upto a pressure of 1.5 times
the working pressure. The piping shall be slowly charged with water so that all the air is
expelled from the piping by providing a 25 mm inlet with a stop cock. The piping shall be
allowed to stand full of water for a period of 2 hours and then the piping shall be put under
pressure by means of manually operated test pump or by a power driven test pump. The
pressure gauges used for testing shall be accurate and shall preferably calibrated before the
testing is carried out. All the leakage and defects in joints revealed during the testing shall be
rectified to the entire satisfaction of the constant. The system may be tested in section parts
as the work of erection of piping proceeds. The piping shall withstand 1.5 times the working
pressure for at least 2 hours.
The equipment for control panel should be compact neatly wired and enclosed in a suitable
14 gauge MS sheet/ 16 CRCA sheet metal box which is suitably treated against corrosion.
The control panel should be painted with over banked enamel paint. The panel shall consist
of:
a. Panel should be made in a modules of 10 zones e.g. each module will have audible
and visual indications and will monitor the circuit conditions.

The circuits provided in the control panel for each zone shall indicate the following
conditions:
2.10 The automatic annunciation panel shall suitable for operation on 24V DC and shall be
provided with power supply unit suitable to operate on A.C. mains of 230 V with a variation
of 10%. The system shall be so designed that in case of failure of A.C. min supply it shall
automatically change over to battery supply.
2.11 Suitable protection may be provided against charging of the battery over and above the
specified values.
The system shall be powered by lead acid storage stationery complete with automatic duel
rate charger boost and trick operating from 220 V, 50 Hz, single phase, mains supply. The
battery capacity should be adequate for operation of the system connected to it for at least
24 hours in the non-alarm state followed by 30 minutes operation of all sounders and other
connected equipment after a power (mains) failure.
The automatic charger should operate at the boost charge when the battery terminal voltage
is less than about 2.1 V 20 per cell, and operate at a trickle charge rate of 100 o 200 HA,
when the battery terminal voltage exceeds about 2.25 per cell.

The preferred nominal DC voltage shall be 24V and shall preferably by isolated (if any
isolated supply is provided a line earthing indicator should also be provided).
The DC system and the detection and sounder circuits shall be protected against their
attaining a voltage to earth exceeding 50 V.
The connection to the 220 V, 50 Hz, single phase system shall be through a three pin plug
socket especially provided for the connection to the annunciation panel. The connection
should in addition utilized for earthing all non-current carrying metal parts of the sprinkler
system, except those that are either doubly insulated or mounted at a height exceeding 2.2
mtr.
The battery unit shall be housed in a steel cabinet with suitable mounting at least 2.5 mm
thick suitably painted with two coats of Post Office Red Enamel, necessary vent holes
should be provided for proper ventilation.
One battery unit complete with battery charger shall be provided for each control panel.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION
The piping for hydrant system shall be MS medium class up to 150 mm diameter
and 6 mm wall thickness for pipes and above 150 mm dia. The piping shall be of
approved make conforming to IS: 1239 Part I. The pipe fittings shall be of wrought
or mild steel of heavy class, confirming to IS: 1239-II Mild steel flanges shall be of
heavy duty suitable for test pressure of 14 kg./cm2 and shall conform to relevant IS
table (IS 6392). Flanges shall be faced and insertion gasket shall be of butyl
rubber/neoprene. The joint shall be capable of withstanding welded to each other
by qualified welders. The sample of welding shall be subjected to dia penetration
test. The welding work shall be commenced only after written approval of the
Architect/Employer.
Underground piping shall be coated and wrapped with two coats of coal tar hot
enamel paints and two wraps of reinforced fiber glass tissue and a coat of coal tar
enamel paint on the top of wrapping.
Above ground piping shall be installed with angle iron supports / anchors / hangers
at regular intervals. The spacing between supports shall not be more than 3.0
meters for straight lengths and supports shall be provided at every Tee/Bend valve
so that piping does not bear undue strain during normal operation. All above ground
piping including supports / hangers etc. shall be given two coats of post office and
colour synthetic enamel painting over a coat of primer after installation and testing.
Pipes shall be of brand new quality with proper making of class of piping and make
of the piping. The piping shall be thoroughly cleaned by flushing of water before the
system is commissioned.
Sluice valves shall be of cast iron with gun metal trims. Sluice valves of Kirloskar/
Venus shall be supplied. Valves shall conforming PN 1.6 of IS: 780 shall be used.
Flanges shall be as per IS:1536 or BS table D. Valve wheel shall have an arrow
engraved or cast there on showing the direction of turning open or close operation.
Valves shall be of being locked in open position. Valves which are ISI marked for
class PN 1.6 shall only be used. Suitable locking arrangement for valves in OPEN
position shall be supplied.
Non return valves shall be of cast iron with gun metal trims. The non return valve
shall conform to IS: 5312. Non return valves shall be of flanged type. Spring loaded
valves shall not be used. The valves shall be suitable for a working pressure of 15
Kg/cm2. Wherever higher working pressure is involved NRV conforming to IS:
1868 class 300 shall be used.
Landing valves shall be 63mm dia oblique female instantaneous `Morris Pattern
with caps and chains. Landing valves shall conform to IS: 5290 in all respects.
Landing valves shall be installed on hydrant risers/down comer at a height of 1.0 to
1.2 mtr. from the floor level. The landing valves shall be connected to the wet
riser/dawn comer stand pipes by means of a 100x100x65mm tee the cost of which
is deemed to be included in the unit rate for piping.
Branch pipes shall be of GUNMATEL with leaded tin bronze ring at the discharge
end to receive the nozzle and provided at the other end with a leaded tin bronze
ring to fit into the instantaneous coupling. Nozzle shall be of jet and spray (or fog)
type of diameter of not less than 16 mm and not more than 25 mm. Nozzle shall be
of leaded tin or bronze or aluminium. Branch pipe and nozzle shall be of
instantaneous pattern. Branch pipes and nozzles shall comply with IS: 903-1975.
The construction and material of hose reel shall conform to IS: 884. Hose reel shall
be 20 mm dia bore. The hose reel shall be of reinforced rubber as per IS: 5132 and
of length 36.5 mtr. (120 ft.) and fitted with 6.5 mm dia jet and spray nozzle. The
hose reel shall be providing with swinging type reel drum (swing angle 180°C). The
reel drum shall be provided with packing gland of gun metal adjustable by means of
nuts. The bearings shall be of gun metal. The reel drums shall red enamel painted
and bright parts chromium plated.
Hose cabinet shall be glass fronted with hinged door and lock. The cabinet shall be
made of 1.8 mm thick MS sheet and spray painted to post office red colour. The
hose cabinet shall comprise of the following:
i. Hose reel of 36.5 mtr. length and drum with swing bracket, suitably
reinforced support and connection to landing valve.
iv. 1 No. 63 mm dia oblique pattern instantaneous female lending valves with
caps and chains.
Fire pump shall be electrically driven centrifugal pump of capacity 38 LPS (500gpm)
against 60 mtr. Head. The pump shall be capable of furnishing not less than 150%
of the rated capacity at a head of not less than 65% of rated head. The shut off
head shall not exceed 120% of the rated head in the case of horizontal pumps.
The pumps shall be automatic in operation and driven by a drip proof squirrel cage
class E insulated electric motor of 60 hp at rated rpm. The construction details of
the pumps shall be as follows :

k) Control panel Cubical control panel comprising of incoming switch, bus bars, ou

a) The pumping set shall be centrifugal type horizontal fire pump designed to
discharge required quantity of water as per the requirements below and driven by
diesel engine of specifications given hereinafter :
Head 60 mtr.
b) Direct injection type, compression ignition type running at required design speed
and fitted with fly wheel, coupling and guard, automatically controlled starting motor,
spring loaded stop control, oil bath air cleaner, exhaust silencer, cooling system
regulator, diesel storage service tank of 200 ltrs. (6 hrs. capacity) with magnetic oil
level, indicator, supports, necessary copper fuel oil piping, stop cocks etc. as
required, exhaust piping as required from engine to outdoor with double layer
asbestos rope insulation. The engine shall be capable of operating on full load
continuously for a period of six hours at site elevation. The engine shall have speed
governor to control the engine speed within 5% of its rated speed under any
conditions of the loading. Any manual device fitted to the engine, which could
prevent the engine from starting shall return automatically to the normal position.
The engine shall be provided with a tachometer to indicate the speed. A hour meter

shall be provided to record cumulative operation of the diesel
engine. A residential silencer shall be provided in the exhaust piping to restrict the
noise of engine within permissible limits.
c) Cooling system of the engine shall conform in all respects to specifications of rules
of TAC.
d) Fuel tank shall be of welded steel confirming relevant Indian standard. The tank
must be mounted above engine fuel pump to provide a gravity feed. The tank must
be fitted with magnetic indicator showing the level of the fuel in the tank. The
capacity of the tank shall be sufficient to allow the engine to run on full load for 3
hours or minimum 200 ltrs.

Two separate 24 bolt heavy duty starter batteries of reputed make in wood tray
including inter-battery connectors and end terminate shall be supplied for starting of
diesel pump.
h) BATTERY CHARGER
Wall mounted battery charger with air-cooled transformer and full valve bridge
connected rectifier, suitable for operation on SP 230V, 50 hz supply shall also
supplied.
i) The diesel engine and pumpset shall be supplied with one fabricated bed plate to
carry pump and engine.
j) Suitable cushy foot mountings for vibration isolation shall also be supplied.

k) Installation shall be as specified under ‘Electric Pump’.
The jockey pump shall be similar in construction as main fire pump. The jockey
pump shall be capable of meeting line pressure drop of 0.35 kg/sq.cm. (5 psi). The
jockey pump shall cut in approximately 0.35 kg/sq.cm. below the normal system
pressure and cut out at normal system pressure.

Every wet riser shall be provided with an air cushion tank at its top most point. The
air cushion tank shall be provided with an automatic air release cock, 20 mm dia
drain pipe, drain valve and a shut off valve as shown in the sketch.
Yard hydrant shall comprise of a 80 mm dia MS stand pipe, flange riser. CI/MS duct
foot bend, sluice valve of 80 mm. dia with surface box, comparison flanges, 63 mm
dia instantaneous morris type landing valve etc. and a cabinet type glass fronted
box to accommodate all above. The yard hydrant shall be painted `post office red'
enamel and enclosed in masonry wall. The cabinet shall be provided with a suitable
lock. The thickness of sheet of cabinet shall be min. 1.8 mm.
Fire brigade inlet connection to system shall comprise for instantaneous pattern
63mm dia male inlets with caps and chains complete with a 100mm MS header,
100mm sluice valve, non return valve housed in a MS cabinet with glass fronted
door. The cabinet shall be suitable for recess mounting and provided with locking

device. The cabinet shall be made of 1.8 mm thick MS sheet and painted with
`Post office red' enamel.
1.15 Testing
After laying and jointing, the piping shall be pressure tested by hydrostatic method.
The piping shall be slowly filled with water in order to expel the air. The piping shall
than be allowed to stand full of water for 24 hours. Any leakage or else where shall
be rectified.
The pressure shall then be applied by means of a test pump (either hand operated
or power operated). The test pressure shall not be less than 1.5 times the working
pressure of the system. However, the test pressure may not exceed 12.0 kg./ in any
case.
Pressure gauges used for the test shall accurate and shall preferably have been
recalibrated before test. Capacity of pumps shall be checked with respect to the
contractor's piping and equipment layout.
_ Test shall be conducted to determine the delivery head, flow and BHP of
pumps after installation. The test results shall correspond to the contract
ratings and performance curves. All the leaks and defects in joints revealed
during the testing shall be rectified to the satisfaction of the owner /
Architects. The system shall also be tested for its desired performance and
function by opening hydrant valves on each floor when landing valves on
floor below are in open condition. The pressure setting of automatic starting
device for fire pump shall also be checked for its correct operation. The test
results shall be recorded and counter signed by the Owners / Architects
representatives and submitted in triplicate for approval of the Architects.
_ A suitable orifice plate with shut off valves and balancing valves, rotameter /
manometer shall be employed for determining the rated capacity against
discharge head specified.
