Lesson 8 - Test Hypo On Pop Mean

This document outlines the steps for conducting a hypothesis test on a population mean: 1) Identify given values and significance level. 2) Formulate the null and alternative hypotheses. 3) Choose the appropriate test statistic and critical value. 4) Calculate the test statistic using sample data. 5) Make a decision to reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis based on the critical value. 6) Draw a conclusion about the population mean. An example applies these steps to test a claim about average housing spending.

FOURTH QUARTER
Chapter 4: Test of Hypothesis
v Lesson 8: Solving Problems Involving Test
of Hypothesis on PopulationMean

Objectives:
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to
q identify the steps in hypothesis testing; and
q solve problems involving test of hypothesis on
the population mean.
In the previous module, you
studied about constructing
hypotheses based on assumptions
made. You’ve learned how to
determine the appropriate test
statistic to be used and solve its
value in a given situationas well as
how to identify the critical value
and draw the critical region.
3
In this module, you will apply
your knowledge and skills on
solving problems in hypothesis
testing. Eventually, you will decide
whether you will reject the null
hypothesis or not.

The following are the steps in conducting a test
of hypothesis:
Step 1: Identify the given values and the level of
significance to be used.
Step 2: Formulate the null and alternative
hypotheses.
Step 3: Choose the appropriate test statistic and
determine the critical value of the test statistic.
Step 4: Find the value of the test statistic using
the sample data.
Step 5: Make a decision. 7
The table below are guidelines to make an
appropriate decision.
Tail of Reject the null hypothesis
distribution
Left-tailed If the test statistic is located to the
left of the critical value
right-tailed If the test statistic is located to the
right of the critical value
Two-tailed If the test statistic is located to the
left of the negative critical value or
to the right of positive critical value.
Step 6: Draw a conclusion.8
Example No. 1
According to a 2011 survey, Filipinos spent
an average amount of P150,000 annually on
housing with P9,000 standard deviation. A
suburban community claims that their
residents did not spend P150,000. The
community used 48 residents, they found
that these residents spent an annual
average of P155,500. Is there a sufficient
evidence to support the claim at 0.05 level
of significance?
How to do it!
Step 1: Identify the Step 2: Formulate the null
given values and the and alternative
level of significance hypotheses.
to be used.
μ=150,000 H0: μ = 150,000
x¯=155,500 HA: μ ≠ 150,000
n=48
s=9,000
α=0.05

Lesson 11: Mean and Variance Sampling Distribution
Step 3: : Choose the appropriate test statistic
and determine the critical value of the test
statistic.
Since the alternative hypothesis contains “not
equal” symbol, the hypothesis test is a two-
tailed test. The sample size is greater than 30
and the population standard deviation is known.
Thus, the appropriate test statistic is the z-test
statistic.
Since it is a two-tailed test with α=0.05, the
rejection area is 4.23 in each end tail of the
distribution.
11
Lesson 11: Mean and Variance Sampling Distribution
Step 4: Find the value of the test
statistic using the sample data.

Z=
Step 5: Make a decision.
Since it is a two-tailed test with α=0.05, the
rejection area is 4.23 in each end tail of the
distribution, the test statistic z=4.23 is located to
the right of the critical value 1.960, reject the null
hypothesis and accept the alternative hypothesis
Step 6: Draw a conclusion.
The claim of suburban community is
true.
q Applying the formula for test statistic will
get the corresponding standardized value.
q The decision is either to reject or not to
reject the null hypothesis.
q If the null hypothesis is rejected, the
alternative hypothesis is accepted.
q Draw a conclusion about the population
mean in the context of the original claim
