THERMAL INSULATION
G. The basic insulating material for vessels, tanks, exchangers, piping greater than 610 mm OD
(NPS 24), and equipment shall be blankets (called “board” by some manufacturers); the
exception would be horizontal piping that may be subject to human foot traffic, then block
insulation shall be installed.
H. Block insulation shall be used on the top of heads of vertical vessels and for walkways on
storage tank roofs. Blankets shall be used for bottom heads of vertical vessels, horizontal
vessels, and tubular equipment heads.
Fiberglass shall be used on all Carbon Steel pipe and equipment with the exception of the top of
tanks and vessels where Calcium Silicate shall be used. Expanded Perlite insulation shall be used
on all Stainless Steel pipe and equipment. Selection and use of alternate materials require prior
approval from the Buyer:
A. Application: Carbon Steel piping, tank shells and vessels (except top heads)
A. Jackets shall be aluminum except in hazardous areas where type 304 stainless steel shall be
used (refer to Attachment 5).
B. Metal jacketing systems shall have a moisture barrier to prevent galvanic corrosion at the metal
to insulation interface of the jacket and the pipe. Moisture barrier shall be applied to the
underside of the metal jacket.
C. Adhesive mounted non-skid material shall be placed on roof jacketing in areas where normal
maintenance access is provided.
