The Jaycee
HEALTHGUARD
Program
"Left to their own resources," a member of the 1960 health planning group said, "most Junior Chambers would eventually turn to health projects for community improvement. With a little encouragement, all of them will." This statement points up a prime reason for a health program. Most people and particularly Jaycees have a burning desire to serve. The Jaycee Healthguard Program is an attempt to harness that desire to achieve the best possible results. Resolve now to have your chapter adopt a defined health program to consist of one or more of the ten health phases. A publ ic information project is good. An action campaign is better. Information plus action is best. The key to any successful project in the field of publ ic
IS
The ten health phases were chosen by the national Jaycee Health Advisory Committee, composed of noted doctors and surgeons, not because the doctors thought they would be "fun to do", but because the committee thought that emphasis on these health areas was needed by the nation as a whole. Your job will be to determine needs in your community and adopt a defined program. (California State Jaycees urged chapters to adopt at I.,ast two phoses.) The brochures are divided into the following sections: The Problem; The Jaycee Healthguard Program; How to Get Started; Other Project Ideas; Sources of Additional Information and Material. Under Sources of Information, you wi II find names of organi zation s to wh ich you can wr ite to secure materials to help in your program. Any special problem should be referred to the Community Health and Safety Department of the national Jaycee office. Since many people and organizations are active In the health field, cooperation is a necessary ingredient in any project. Work closely with locol publ ic health officials and the county medical society to insure a successful program.

One of the most significant advances your chapter can make this year is to form a Jaycee health advisory commi ttee. professional advice IS The principle of obtaining field, it is universally recognized, but in the health doubly important. Without such advice, the Jaycees or any other organization cannot properly align its projects with the mainstream of medical thought. If for no other reason, the desire to see continuity in your health program should prompt you to seek an advisory group. But, this is only one of its benefits. Another is community support. The major consideration, however, should be neither continuity nor Clotoperation. It should be that needed of conducting by the that can comare fore-

Once your committee is formed, be sure to schedule regular meetings (monthly or quarterly) and have plenty of work for it, else your unit wi II lose its purpose and i mportanc e. American Medical Association 535 North Dearborn Chicago 10, Illinois Director, Special Staff on Aging Department of Health, Education Washington 25, D. C. National Committee on the Aging 345 Eo st 46th Street New York 17, New York
In our own nati on, the number of person s 45 years of age and older has increased from approximately 13.5 million in 1900 to nearly 50 million in 1960. The number 65 years of age and over has increased from approximately 3 million in 1900 to almost 15 million in 1960. By 1975, the number is expected to reach 21 million. State and community interest in the problems of aging continues to grow, stimulated by the spreading awareness of the rising number of middle-aged and older people and by recognition of the contribution they can make to community and national life.
Program
The Jaycees can fill a vital need in the community by adopting a sound, realistic "Care of the Aged" program. Here's how: 1. Actively promote job opportunities for those older persons who desire gainful employment and are physically and mentally capable of such activity. There are jobs that can be filled by the elderly. There are employers in the community who want the services of older persons. Getting them together can be the job of the Jaycees. 2. Work with the aging person directly. One of the best methods of promoting mental and physical well-being is to show that society Walts them and 'the contributions they can make. Thi s can be called "keeping up morale," or what have you, but by demonstrating real, down-to-earth interest in the senior citizens of your community, you take a big step toward development of a realistic program for the aged. 3. Stimulate a realistic attitude toward aging by providing speakers, exhibits and source materials for health fairs, meetings of civic clubs and other such gatherings

The Problem
Family health maintenance is a personal responsibility. America is rich in medical services and facilities, yet all these resources are wasted unless they are properly used by members of your community. Each person should be made aware of all medical facilities available in his area, should participate in community health activities, have a fami Iy physician and take a personal interest in the state of his own family's health .

This three-phase program for Juvenile Protection is aimed at correcting major threats to the health and welfare of America's youth . While national in scope, these threats are of vItal concern to every community. It is there the actual damage is done. Only those communities with action-minded leaders willing to reject the "easy way out" in favor of a realistic approach to the problem have a chance to stem the tide of moral laxity. The Jaycees are especially well-suited to the responsibility for such a program in juvenile prote.::tion, since the average age of the Jaycee is such that he more readily understands the problems of youth.

Solicit suggestions and comments from these groups to further strengthen your campaign. Arrange to talk before a school assembly, P. Committee structure is also indicated for the chapter with 25-50 members. Larger chapters need only add commi tteemen. Whi Ie these suggestions may help, don't be limited by them. Your Jun ior Cham ber is di fferent from any other and your committee structure should vary with the needs of the chapter and community. NOTE: One of the best aids in organizing and efficiently operating your committee is the records keeping method of the Records and Recognition Program. This method is embodied in a set of forms called the Eight Basic Forms, RR050, wh ich can be ordered from the USJCC Supplies Department at lO per set. We urge you to use them for more efficient committee operation, for more orderly records and for giving your committee a chance to win national recognition - and they make your job easier.
