What I Need to Know
What are these hormones involved in our reproductive system? What are the
roles of hormones in the male and female reproductive systems? In reading this
module you will be able to answer these two questions.
Specifically, this module shall help you attain the following learning objectives:
1. identify and describe the hormones involved in the male and female
reproductive system; and
2. explain the role of hormones involved in the female and male reproductive
system.

Wha I
Let s recall. The basic nit of an organism is cell. Cells working together forms tissue
and tissues working together is called organ and organs working together to perform
a certain function is called the organ system. In humans, our body is composed of
different system working together in order for us to be healthy and well. Can you
identify the different organ systems that are present in our body? To give you a clue,
humans have 11 major organ system. Figure 1 below shows the parts of the male
and female reproductive system. Study and recall the functions of each part.
Figure 1. Human Reproductive System

Wha Ne
Activity 1. Reproductive Hormones. Direction: Study the table below and try to
answer the questions given.
Hormone Location Function
Estrogen Follicle cells Influence female traits and support
(Ovary) reproductive function. Inhibits growth of
facial hair and initiates secondary sex
characteristics. It also causes
thickening of the endometrium
Progesterone Corpus Luteum Stimulates the endometrium and
(ovary) inhibits ovulation, uterine contractions
and firms the cervix.
Testosterone Interstitial cells Promotes and regulates the
(Testes) development of secondary sex
characteristics and stimulates
spermatogenesis.
Follicle male and female It helps control the production of sperm
Stimulating reproductive in the testes.
Hormone system
It helps stimulates development of egg
cells, called ova, which develop in
structures called follicles.
Luteinizing male and female It stimulates testosterone production
Hormone reproductive from the interstitial cells of the testes
system (Leydig cells).
It plays a role in the development of
egg cell, induction of ovulation, and
stimulation of estrogen and
progesterone production by the
ovaries.
Questions:
1. What hormones are released in female reproductive system?
2. How about in male?
3. What hormones are released in both female and male reproductive system?
4
What Is It
The endocrine system - is made up of the endocrine glands that secrets
hormones and in control of the body mechanisms. As shown in the figure 2, the
human endocrine system involves different glands, which secretes different
hormones.
Endocrine Gland is an organ that makes and
puts out hormones to do specific function or task in
our body. There are 8 major endocrine glands but we
will focus on the Gonads, the primary reproductive
organs which includes testes in male and ovaries in
female.
Hormones are chemical substances that act like
messenger in the body. They are being made in one
part of the body and travel to the other parts where
they can help on how the cells or the organs work.
Figure 2. Human Endocrine System
One example of a hormone is insulin, it is made in the pancreas, released into the
blood and it helps regulate how cells of the body use glucose (sugar).
Reproductive Hormones are responsible for sexual development and drivers of
human reproduction.
Male Hormones
Male reproductive hormones, such as, Luteinizing Hormone (LH) also enters
the testes and stimulates the interstitial cells of Leydig to make and release
testosterone into the testes and the blood.
a. Testosterone - this reproductive hormone helps develop and maintain
male sex characteristics and in the production of sperm in the testes. The
hypothalamus stimulates the release of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and LH
into the male system for the first time at the start of puberty.
Spermatogenesis is induced by the testosterone during puberty that is
responsible for the development of secondary sex characteristics in males. These
secondary sex characteristics include a deepening of the voice, the growth of facial,
axillary, and pubic hair, and the beginnings of the sex drive.
b. Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) - this hormone helps control the
production of sperm in the testes. This hormone stimulates testicular growth and
enhance the production of an androgen -binding protein by the Sertoli cells, which
5
are a component of the testicular tubule necessary for sustaining the maturing sperm
cell.
d. Luteinizing Hormone (LH) - produced and released in the anterior
pituitary gland the Luteinizing Hormone stimulates testosterone production
from the interstitial cells of the testes (Leydig cells).
Female Hormones
Female reproductive hormones include estrogen and progesterone. In
females, the regulation of reproduction is more complex. As with the male, the
anterior pituitary hormones cause the release of the hormones FSH and LH.
Furthermore, estrogens and progesterone are released from the developing follicles.
They help in the development, maintain sex characteristics, and play an important
role in the menstrual cycle, fertility and pregnancy.
a. Estrogen - the reproductive hormone in females that assists in endometrial
regrowth, ovulation, and calcium absorption; it is also responsible for the secondary
sexual characteristics of females. These include breast development, flaring of the
hips, and a shorter period necessary for bone maturation.
b. Progesterone - assists in regrowth of the endometrial and inhibition of the
release of FSH and LH.
c. Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) - stimulates development of egg
cells, called ova, which develop in structures called follicles.
d. Luteinizing Hormone (LH) - also plays a role in the development of egg
cell, induction of ovulation, and stimulation of estrogen and progesterone production
by the ovaries.

What I Can Do
Read, analyze and explain the given situation (5 points).
Your body develops faster at puberty than any other time in your life. Puberty
usually starts between age 7 and 13 in females and 9 and 15 in males.
Situation: Your little brother or any young male person is asking you why his
shoulders grow broader, his body becomes more muscular, and his voice changes.
Based on what you have read and understand, write your explanation to his query.
