Calc I-II Unit 5 Exam (2023)

This document contains a 6 question unit exam on calculus topics like integrals, volumes of revolution, and work. It instructs students to show all work and reasoning for partial credit. Questions involve setting up integrals to find volumes, averages, work done by springs and pumping water, and lifting weights on ropes. Students are asked to sketch regions, set up integrals, and in some cases solve integrals using given information and physical formulas.

Unit 5 Exam

Make sure to answer all of the questions completely and to show all work in the space
provided. Remember, the correct answer is only worth 1 point. The reasoning is what is
important!

1. Let there be a region in the first quadrant enclosed by the graphs of y = sin x and y =
cos x, and the 𝒚 − 𝒂𝒙𝒊𝒔.

a. (2 point) Sketch a picture of the region.

b. (2 points) Find the area of the region using integrals.

c. (4 points) Set up but do not solve the integral that would give the volume of the solid
generated when the region is revolved around the x-axis by using the disk/washers
method.

d. (4 points) Set up but do not solve the integral that would give the volume of the solid
generated when the region is revolved around the y-axis using the shells method.

1
e. (4 points) Set up but do not solve the integral that would give the volume of the solid
generated when the region is revolved around y = 10.

f. (4 points) Set up but do not solve the integral that would give the volume of the solid
generated when the region is revolved around x = -5.

2. Given the region in the first quadrant bounded by the curves y = x 3 and y = 4x:
a. (2 points) Provide a sketch of the region described above and find its area.

b. (6 points each) Assuming that the area found in 2a. is the base of a solid, find each of
the following:

i. Set up but do not solve for the integral to find the volume of the solid whose parallel
cross sections perpendicular to the x-axis are equilateral triangles with the base in the
region.

ii. Set up but do not solve for the integral to find the volume of the solid whose parallel
cross sections perpendicular to the x-axis are semicircles, with the diameter in the base.

2
iii. Set up but do not solve for the integral to find the volume of the solid whose parallel
cross sections perpendicular to the x-axis are rectangles where the height is equal to
three times the distance from the y-axis and having the base in the region.

3. (10 points) Given the function f ( x) = x 3 − 1 , find the average value of the function on
the interval [0, d], then find the value of c in terms of d such that 𝑓𝑎𝑣𝑒 = 𝑓(𝑐).

4. Use Hooke’s Law and integrals to solve the following problem.

(10 points) Suppose that 10 J of work are required to stretch a spring from its natural
length of 5 centimeters to 10 centimeters past its natural length. Set up but do not solve
the integral that would tell you how much work would be required to stretch the same
spring to a total of 7 centimeters.

3
5. A right conical reservoir is 10 meters deep and 8 meters in diameter and is oriented
with the pointed tip down.

(20 points) If the depth of the water is 6 meters, use integrals and the fact that the density
of water is 1000 kg/cubic meter to set up and solve the integral used to find the work
required to pump out all of the water. (You may use your calculator.)

4
6. (20 points) A weight of mass 30kg is hanging on a 20 meter rope. The rope has a
mass of 5 kgs. What is the work done in lifting the weight 12 meters? (You may use your
calculator.)
