Expt 6 The Cage Rotor Induction Motor

This document describes an experiment to study the construction and operating characteristics of a cage-rotor induction motor. The objectives are to investigate the relationship between speed, current, output power, power factor, and efficiency at varying torque levels. The procedure involves applying incremental torque to the motor using a test bed and dynamometer, and recording the corresponding voltage, current, speed, power, and torque values. Calculations are then made to determine output power, input power, volt-amperes, power factor, and efficiency. Graphs are plotted to show how these parameters vary with torque.

Experiment No. 6
THE CAGE ROTOR INDUCTION MOTOR

OBJECTIVES:

1. To study the construction and fundamental principle of induction motor.

2. To investigate the relationship between the speed, current, output power, power factor
and efficiency of a cage -rotor induction motor and the torque produced by the motor.

EQUIPMENT INITIAL SETTINGS

Test Bed  Speed range 1800 rev/min
 External/ internal torque switch to INT
 Torque reverse switch to give positive
meter deflection
 Torque meter range to 2.5 N-m
 Break torque control to minimum
FH90 Cage Rotor Induction Motor Test machine
Instrumentation Frame
V3 AC Voltmeter 250 V range
A3 AC Ammeter 10 A range
W1 AC Wattmeter 500 W range

PROCEDURES:

1. Set up the equipment and connect the wiring diagram as shown in Fig. 6.1 or Fig. 6.2.

2. Switch on the power to the test bed, firs at the main switch and then press the green ON
push button to activate the contractor.

3. Adjust the brake control so that the motor develops an indicated torque of approximately
0.8 N-m. Allow the motor to warm up for approximately 10 minutes. Reset the brake
control to a minimum after the warm up period.

4. In step, as indicated in the result table, increase the torque on the motor, and record
corresponding values of torque, speed, power, voltage and current, until the motor stalls.
Note that, obtaining readings in the range from maximum torque to stalled condition
requires careful experimentation. (Note: when the power factor is less than 0.5, the
indication on one of the two wattmeters will be reversed, and it will be necessary to
reverse the connections to the voltage coil and regard this reading as a negative value.
Therefore, the input power is the algebraic sum of Wa and Wb)

5. Finally, measure the starting torque and current using the rotor locking pin provided.
Deactivate the contactor by pressing the RED OFF push button, and insert the pin into the
hole located in the right hand dynamometer boss. It may be necessary to rotate the shaft
to align the holes in the shaft and the boss, and adjust the Perspex safety guard so that the
enlarged section of the slot coincides with the pin. Disconnect the lead between the
dynamometer supply and the dynamometer. Activate the contactor by pressing the green
ON push button and read the torque and current values.

CAUTION:
This procedure must be completed as quickly as possible in order to avoid
overheating of the windings of the motor. Care must be taken to check the zero of the
torque measuring system.

CALCULATIONS:

Calculate values of output power, volt-amperes, input power, power factor using the
following relationships:

Output power = (2 π )(speed)(torque)/60

Input power = algebraic sum of wattmeter readings
Volt- amperes = (Supply voltage) (supply current)
Power factor = (Input Power)/(Volt-amperes)
Per unit efficiency = (Output power)/ (Input power)

GRAPHS:

Plot graphs of speed, line current, output power, power factor and efficiency as ordinate
against torque as abscissa

QUESTIONS AND PROBLEMS

1. Describe the construction of the stator of an induction motor.

2. Describe different methods of constructing the cage rotor of an induction motor.
3. Why are the rotor bars skewed in a cage-rotor induction motor?
4. Unlike most single phase motors, the cage rotor induction motor is self-starting because
of the presence of a revolving field. Explain how a revolving field is produced in a three-
phase induction motor.
5. What is meant by slip? In what ways may it be designated?
6. Explain the procedure on how to obtain the no-load input power to an induction motor
when two wattmeter method of measuring power is used.
7. A three-phase 60-Hz 10-pole cage-rotor induction motor has a full-load slip of 0.75. what
is the full-load speed?
