Assignment: Graphing Practice

( /22 Marks)

Date: Name: Sofia

• The amount of oxygen gas dissolved in water is important to the organisms that live in
a river. The amount of dissolved oxygen varies with changes in both physical factors and biological
processes. The temperature of the water is one physical factor affecting dissolved oxygen levels as
shown in the data table below. The amount of dissolved oxygen is expressed in parts per million
(ppm)

Using the information in the data table above, create a graph by following the
directions below. Use the GRAPH PAPER provided by your teacher/posted
on elearning. (No lined or blank paper allowed!)

• What is the independent variable?

(1mark)
The tempature
• What is the dependent variable (1 mark)
Oxygen

• REMEMBER:

The independent variable goes on the x-axis.

The dependent variable goes on the y-axis.

• Properly label the axes. (1 mark)

• Plot the points on your graph. (1 mark)

• Draw a line of best fit using a ruler. (1 mark)

• Give your graph an appropriate title. (HINT: Use the the rules outlined in your
notes. See the graph powerpoint notes or the handout on the rules for drawing graphs.)
Write the title at the top of the graph. (1 mark)
• Write a figure caption for your graph. (HINT: See the graph powerpoint notes
for information about how to write a proper figure caption.) The figure caption should be at
the bottom of your page (underneath your graph). (1 mark)
• If the trend continues, what would the dissolved oxygen level most likely be if
the temperature of the water was 35°C? ppm (1 mark)
• State the relationship between dissolved oxygen and water temperature.

• A number of bean seeds planted at the same time produced plants that were later
divided into two groups A and B. Each plant in group A was treated with gibberellic acid (a plant
hormone). The plants in group B were not treated with gibberellic acid. All other growth conditions
were kept constant. The height of each plant was measured on 5 consecutive days, and the average
height of each group was recorded in the data table below.

Using the information in the data table above, create a graph by following the
directions below. Use the GRAPH PAPER provided by your teacher/posted
on elearning. (No lined or blank paper allowed!)

At first it may seem difficult to determine the independent and dependent variables because there
are multiple pieces of info given (group, treatment, days, height). How do you determine which
of these are the variables????????

HINT: Think about what was done in this lab. The scientist is investigating how the
average height of the plant is changing over a 5 day time period. The graph for this
experiment needs to show the AVERAGE PLANT HEIGHT VERSUS THE NUMBER
OF DAYS. However, there are two separate experiments, one with gibberellic acid and
one without, so you need two separate lines on the graph (one for each set of data).

• What is the independent variable?

(1mark)

• Whatis the dependent variable?

(1 mark)

• REMEMBER:
The independent variable goes on the x-axis.
The dependent variable goes on the y-axis.

• Properly label the axes. (1 mark)

• Plot the points on your graph. Note that you have two different sets of data.
Plot the points for Group A in one colour. Plot the points for Group B in a different
colour. (2 marks)
• Using a ruler, draw a line of best fit for each set of data. Colour code your
line to match the colours you used in part e) above. You will have TWO separate lines
when you are done. One line for Group A and one line for Group B. (2 marks)
• Create a legend for your graph to explain what each coloured line represents.
(i.e. Which colour represents plants with giberellic acid and which colour represents plants
without?) Include the legend somewhere on your graph. (1 mark)
• Give your graph an appropriate title (according to the rules outlined in your
notes). Write the title at the top of the graph. (1 mark)
• Write a figure caption for your graph (according to the rules outlined in your
notes). The figure caption should be at the bottom of your page (underneath your graph). (1
mark)
• State a valid conclusion that can be drawn concerning the effect of
gibberellic acid on bean plant growth. In other words, what is the relationship
between gibberllic acid and bean plant growth?
