Introductory Message
Welcome to Research 2!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts

of the Schools Division of San Carlos City and DepEd Regional Office VI -
Western Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management
Division (CLMD). This is developed to guide the learning facilitators
(teachers, parents, and responsible adults) in helping the learners meet the
standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials

aimed to guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and
time using the contextualized resources in the community. This will also
assist the learners in acquiring lifelong learning skills, knowledge, and
attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Research 2 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-
learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and the
learner. This will be made available to the learners with the references/links
to ease independent learning.

For the learner:

The Research 2 Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue

learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you
with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an
active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform
the activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your
facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Relevant Related Literature

I. Learning Competency with Code

Gather relevant related literature.

II. Background Information for Learners

The search for related literature plays a vital role in doing research. Writing a
research paper begins with a thorough review of related literature that is relevant to
the chosen research topic. This is done to determine if the topic for the research
has not been adequately exhausted yet; prevents a wasteful repetition of work; it
can help suggest or recommend possible topics, problems, and approaches for
future research.

Characteristics of Sources of Related Where to Locate the

Steps in Conducting a Literature Review

Figure 1. Steps in conducting a literature review

The figure above illustrates the steps that must be followed by the
researcher in conducting the literature review.
Steps in gathering Description
literature review
Choose a topic Must be aligned to the research objective, problem or issue
to be discussed.
Identify databases and Describe listing of the available materials or summaries.
resources related to the
chosen topic
Search for and define Seek information by way of scanning the literature
the materials efficiently, using either manual or computerized methods.
Identify useful journal articles and other reference
materials.
Read and analyze the Appraise critically the different studies by applying
articles principles in identifying and analyzing objective and valid
studies.
Writing the literature Summarize and organize the literature review into units
review that present themes, identifying trends, and relevant
concepts. Instead of listing all the materials published,
synthesize, and evaluate them according to the direction of
your thesis concept or research question.

III. Activity Proper
Activity 1: Search Me Up!
Objective: Search for relevant literature.
Materials:
Paper and pen

Searching for relevant literature for your study is not an easy task as you think
it may be. You need to have a clearly defined topic before starting to search for
relevant literature. After constructing or building up a well-defined topic, make a
set of research questions to guide you in searching up for related studies. Since
you are still in the initial stage of writing your research paper, you will need to
search for literature that is related to your topic of interest or your research
problem and question/s.

Example:
What is the efficacy of Makabuhay (Tinospora cordofila) plant extract as an
alternative insecticide?

For a better experience of searching for relevant literature, follow some of the
given tips below:

✓ Make a list of keywords

Begin searching by making a list of keywords related to your research
question. You may include every key concepts or variable that are involved
in your study and write any synonyms and related terms.
Example:
• Efficacy, insecticide, plant, extracts
✓ Search for relevant sources
1. Make use of the keywords to begin searching for sources. Take note of
useful databases to search for journals and articles, such as:

• EBSCO – research database, e-journals, etc.

• Google Scholar
• Inspect (physics, engineering, & computer science)
• Journal Storage (JSTOR) – leading journals across many academic
disciplines
• Medline (Life Sciences and Medicine)
• School Library Catalogue

2. You can utilize Boolean operators to help you narrow down your
search. Boolean operators are the words that include “AND”, “OR” and “NOT”.
These words if used in library databases by typing them in between your
keywords would make your searching more precise and saves time.

Directions: Make a summary table of the articles/journals/publications/ studies

relevant to your chosen topic. Use the format below to guide you in searching
for sources. List down at least five (5) relevant studies.

relevant studies you have searched in Activity 1 that would address your chosen
topic or research problem. Complete the table below.

Guide Questions
1. How did you manage to locate and gather the literature reviews that you are
going to use to support your chosen topic of interest?

2. What do you think are the salient points that research students like you should
take note of when gathering literature reviews?

3. How did the summary table help you in gathering relevant literature for your
study?

4. Do you think the literature reviews that you have gathered provide support to
your chosen topic? Why or why not?

5. Do you think your work becomes trustworthy after gathering the literature
reviews for your topic? Why do you think so?

6. Why is it important to evaluate your sources when selecting relevant literature?

V. ANSWER KEY

Answer may vary

*The student must evaluate the relevant studies s/he wrote in Activity and provide the
necessary information in the given table.
Process Questions
Possible Responses
1. You may provide your personal strategy in choosing relevant studies. Your answer must
consist of keywords like concise, credible (authors) logical, relevant, summary, timely,
valid, etc. You use the principles in choosing/selecting literature reviews that you must
have read from the internet and other sources.
2. In choosing literature reviews you must choose relevant topics. Choosing sources from
credible authors, provides a logical summary of the needed information, timely, and valid
enough to support as evidence to your chosen topic of interest.
3. Using a summary table in selecting literature reviews would ensure that you have chosen
the relevant studies that support your topic. Furthermore, this would help you organize
your thoughts to evaluate these studies as to its purpose before including it to your
literature review.
4. Answer may vary. If the answer yes, you must reason out how the relevant studies
support your chosen topic. If the answer is no, you must include the inconsistencies in
those studies as to the chosen topic.
5. Yes, because I see to it that the relevant studies that I selected for my literature review
are valid and reliable as to my chosen topic.
6. It is very important to evaluate the sources of the relevant studies when writing the
literature review because these are sources that are not reliable and valid. With the vast
amount of information provided by internet-based sources, there is a must to evaluate
them to ensure that my research is trustworthy and can be used by researchers in the
future having the same field of interest.
