3.0 SYNOPSIS & THEORY

Every piece of electronic equipment such as computers, laptops, calculators, TV,

etc is powered from a DC power source, be it a battery or a DC power supply. Most of
these equipments require not only DC voltage, but voltage that is well filtered and
regulated. On the other hand, voltage supplied into our home is AC voltage, and it is
usually delivered in a large value to minimize error during transmission. In Malaysia the
supplied AC voltage is typically 240V with 50Hz frequency. Since the voltage supplied at
our wall socket is AC voltage and we need to use DC voltage to power-up our
equipments, we need to have a power supply.

Figure 1: Block diagram of a simple power supply design

A power supply converting AC line voltage into DC voltage will perform the
process above at high efficiency and at low cost. An ideal power supply would be
characterized by supplying a smooth and constant output voltage regardless of variations
in the voltage, load current or ambient temperature at 100% conversion efficiency.

4.0 PROCEDURES

PART 1: Transformer
1. Create a circuit in Multisim Live.
2. Place a 230VAC 50Hz AC voltage input into the work space.

3. Next, we need to choose a suitable step-down transformer to convert the

input voltage into 23VAC. Calculate your transformer ratio using formula:

V output N secondary
=
V input N primary

4. Place the transformer on the workspace and connect it to the input voltage.

5. To observe the input & output signals, pick the voltage probe and place it
on the wire.

6. Place Probe 1 of the to the input signal, and place Probe 2 to the output
voltage after the transformer.

7. Run the simulation.

8. We can now observe that our input voltage in probe 1 has been reduced
into the output voltage as in Probe 2. To determine the exact value of

voltages, click on the icon.

9. Then set your grapher on the right side of the window as below setting.

10. Stop the simulation. Set Cursor 1 and Cursor 2 to measure the voltage for
input and output.

11. Study the waveforms and record your data. Stop the simulation.

PART 2: Rectifier

1. From your previous circuit, add a rectifier diode to the output of the
transformer.
2. Add a 1k resistor as a load resisor.
3. Place Probe 3 to the output of this rectifier.

4. Run the simulation to see the waveform.

5. Stop the simulation. Set cursor 2 to measure the voltage of probe 3.
6. Study the waveforms and record your data. Stop the simulation.

PART 3: Filter

1. From your previous circuit, add a 1000F polarized filter capacitor to the
output of the rectifier.
2. Make sure that the 1k load resistor remains at the right-most of the
circuit.

3. Run the simulation.
4. Place Probe 3 to the output of this rectifier after adding the filter.
5. Stop the simulation. Set cursor 2 to measure the voltage of probe 3.
6. Study the waveforms and record your data.

PART 4: Regulator

1. From your previous circuit, add a 100 resistor and a Zener died to the
output of the rectifier.
2. Set the Zener diode voltage at 12V.
3. Make sure that the 1k load resistor remains at the right-most of the
circuit.

7. Run the simulation.

8. Place Probe 4 to the output of the Zener diode.
9. Stop the simulation. Set cursor 2 to measure the voltage of probe 4.
10. Study the waveforms and record your data.

5.0 QUESTIONS

1. Referring to the final circuit, what type of power supply is this?

Type DC-DC

2. What type of rectifier is used? What is the advantage(s) of using this

rectifier? What is the disadvantage(s)?

half wave rectifier . the advantage of it is It has a low cost while the
disadvantage is it produce low output voltage

3. What type of regulator is used? What is the advantage(s) of using this

regulator? What is the disadvantage(s)?

The regulator used is linear regulator . t he advantage is it has very "clean"

output with little noise introduced into their DC output, but they can be much
less efficient than switching converters and are unable to step-up the input
voltage like their switched counterparts .

4. What is the function of below items in your power supply design:

a. Transformer

It will transfer electric energy from one alternating-current circuit to

one or more other circuits, either increasing (stepping up) or
reducing (stepping down) the voltage.

b. Rectifier

rectifier converts an oscillating two-directional alternating current

(AC) into a single-directional direct current (DC)

c. Filter
smooths the pulsating DC to make it more consistent. A filter
minimizes or removes ripple voltage from a rectified output by
opposing changes in voltage and current

d. Regulator

Regulator ensures a steady constant voltage supply through all

operational conditions
