Scenarios
1. Benjamin Firth has written to your organisation to apply for a job. Your manager instructs you
to write a short letter saying there are no vacancies at this time.
2. Your manager asks you to research two brands of laser printers and report back to them on
which one you think is the best option. There is no right or wrong choice of printers for this
exercise. You’ll be assessed on the process and completion of your written report (a brief), not
your choice of printers.
3. Your manager asks you to draft an email informing employees of a new procedure for
completing timesheets that they need to read and sign before the end of the week.
4. Draft an email to your trainer informing them that you cannot attend your next training session.
5. Prepare a weekly work schedule showing the job tasks you are required to complete. Prioritise
your tasks and make a note of anything that may impact on your ability to complete tasks on
time.
Task 2 – Question and answer

Q1: You have received a phone message from a client requesting that Tracey, your manager, calls
him back to discuss the upcoming weekend parade. Why is it important to respond to this
enquiry promptly and by what method would you respond?

Q2: Who sets your deadlines for completing written correspondence and how do you ensure you
meet these deadlines?

Q3: Where would you find information about your workplace’s preferred style or format for written
