Solumn Mathematics Module 3 (Fractions)

This document discusses sharing mathematical concepts in the simplest way. It covers converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages. Key points include: 1. Fractions, decimals, and percentages can all represent the same value. 2. Common methods are shown to convert between representations, such as dividing the fraction to get a decimal or moving the decimal point to change between decimal and percentage. 3. Non-terminating decimals that never end can be approximated as fractions by putting 9s in the decimal places and reducing.

SOLUMN MATHEMATICS

MODULE 3: Sharing is Caring!

Quick Recap:
1. Explain the difference of Real and Imaginary numbers
12
2. Find the absolute value of √9 − 8 − 62
12
3. Give an example of transcendental numbers

Quick Activity:
1. How can you share to other people in the simplest way?
2. Is sharing necessary or voluntary? Why?
3. What do you expect in this module?

Pre-Module
Have you tried sharing? What did the person you shared say? What would you say? In this
module, Let us share some knowledge about Mathematics.

Fraction
A fraction (from Latin fractus, "broken") represents a part of a whole or, more generally, any
number of equal parts.
Example:
1 3 4
, ,
8 7 9

Percentage
A percentage is a number or ratio that represents a fraction of 100. It is often denoted by the
symbol "%" or simply as "percent" or "pct." Percent means “per cent” which means per hundreds.
Example:
53%
78%
23%

Decimal
A decimal number can be defined as a number whose whole number part and the fractional part is
separated by a decimal point. The dot in a decimal number is called a decimal point. The digits
following the decimal point show a value smaller than one.
Example:
0.53
0.78
0.23
The Decimal System
The decimal numeral system is the standard system for denoting integer and non-integer numbers.
It is the extension to non-integer numbers of the Hindu–Arabic numeral system. The way of denoting
numbers in the decimal system is often referred to as decimal notation.

Fraction, Decimal, Percentage

A Half can be written...

1
As a fraction: /2
As a decimal: 0.5
As a percentage: 50%

A Quarter can be written...

1
As a fraction: /4
As a decimal: 0.25
As a percentage: 25%

Here is a table of commonly used values shown in Percent, Decimal and Fraction form:
Percent Decimal Fraction

Converting Fraction to Decimal
The line in a fraction that separates the numerator and denominator can be rewritten using the
division symbol. So, to convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator. If
required, you can use a calculator to do this. This will give us our answer as a decimal.
Example:
4
/5
= 4/5
= 0.8

Converting Decimal to Fraction

To convert a decimal into a fraction, you put the numbers to the right of the decimal point in
the numerator (above the fraction line). Next, you place the number 1 in the denominator, and then
add as many zeroes as the numerator has digits. Reduce the fraction if needed.
0.7
= 7(tenths place value)
7
=
10

Converting Percentage to Fraction

The denominator will always be 100. The value will be the numerator. Convert the fraction to
lowest term if needed.
63%
63
=
100

Converting Fraction to Percentage

To convert a fraction to a percent, first divide the numerator by the denominator. Then
multiply the decimal by 100 or by just simply moving two decimal places.
63
100
= 0.63
=0.63(100) = 63% or 0.63(move two decimal places to the right) = 63%

Converting Decimal to Percent and vice versa

In decimal to percent, move two decimal places to the right or multiply by 100 and in percent
to decimal move two decimal places to the left or divide it by 100.
0.67 = 67%
67% = 0.67

Activity 1
Convert 57 out of 100 to Fraction, Decimal and Percent.
Solution:
Lesson Proper
The Pre-Module explains the conversion of the fraction, decimal, percentage also in vice-
versa. What if it’s endless?

Non-Terminating Decimal
Non-Terminating decimal are decimals that never ends. Here’s how to convert them.

0.0033333333 = 0.3333333333… ≈ 0.33

In percent fraction

1. Move the decimal two places to the right

0.3333333333… = 0.33

2. Count the number of digits and put “9” for every digit and write in fraction form
33
0.33 =
99

3. Put it to lowest term. Then put it to percent sign

1
= %
3

Example:
0.6666666 = 66.66666666666…

Decimal = 66.67

Percent Fraction

66.66666666666… = 66.66
66
=
99
66
= 66 +
99
66
= 66 %
