Assignment 6
Assignment 6
1. Consider a shaft of diameter D, on which two gears are mounted. Forces acting
on the gears and their diameters are shown in the Fig.1. Assume that the shaft
is mounted on the bearing which can sustain axial force that the shaft is simply
supported. The diameter of the shaft, D is 60 mm; PCD1 = 100 mm; PCD2 =
150 mm(P CD1 and P CD2 are the pitch circle diameters of the gears 1 and 2. These
are circles on which the forces are acting. These diameters are less than the outer
diameters of the gears.) Ft1 = 4000 N; Fr1 = 900 N; Ft2 = 2666 N; Fr2 = 1500 N;
a = 50 mm; b = 350 mm; c = 300 mm
(a) Find the factor of safety using distortion energy and maximum shear stress
theory if the material of shaft is low carbon steel having yield strength of
290MPa.
(b) Find the factor of safety using Coulomb Mohr and modified Mohr theory if
the material of shaft is grey cast iron having tensile strength of 300MPa and
compressive strength of 900MPa

4. What is the magnitude of the maximum stress that exists at the tip of an internal
crack having a radius of curvature of 1.9 × 10−4 mm and a crack length of 3.8 ×
10−2 mm when a tensile stress of 140 MPa is applied?
