Lesson 1. Understanding Software Application Definition

SOFTWARE APPLICATION

If we wish to understand what application software is, first, we should be clear with the actual
meaning of software and its different types.

Software is a set of processes that allows the computer to execute and optimize your
manual work process and a set of instructions that tell a computer what to do.
Software Application, also called application program, software designed to handle
specific tasks for users. Such software directs the computer to execute commands given
by the user and may be said to include any program that processes data for a user.

One must acknowledge that, like other technological advancements, the software has
undergone substantial changes and modifications over time.

The primary aim of software application is to perform specific tasks, including research,
communication, execution, creativity, etc. Moreover, the computer application is
designed to perform one task only. It could be educational, business, professional or
personal.
It is a software package that can be assisted in performing user-defined tasks and is
specified with user assistance. The application is made up of a single program code or a
group of programs that can be operated with the same application flow and functions
that end users should complete. Every program that is made with users to do tasks with
specified ranges and is automatically connected for productivity and communications.
Tasks are to be completed line by line, based on the user’s requirements, to help the
computer’s capabilities with dedicated tasks to fulfill business tasks. It is used for data
information management systems, data manipulation, and a variety of other application
software’s that help to satisfy their business needs.

If we consider today’s scenario, it’s different from what it started to be.

In fact, the software acts as an extension of a command to the system. Software is programmed
to behave in a certain manner in a system. It can be attached to the system because of this
scenario, and every system has different types of this software. It would be impossible to
execute anything on a machine without software. System software and application software are
the two main categories of software.

What is System Software?

System software is built-in software that comes within a system and executes various
tasks to optimize the process. These usually come pre-installed in the system. Thus, it’s
not easy to uninstall them from the system.

Some software like run command or debugger is pre-coded software inside a

system.
System software is responsible for performing daily operations on a system.
System software is what makes the computer itself work.

TYPES OF SOFTWARE APPLICATION

Software application allow end-users to interact with the system. Hence, it’s known as end-user
programs. Moreover, we can also name this software as an application or app. There are
various types of software applications to perform simple and complex tasks.

A software program is a collection of instructions targeted at modifying the state of

computer hardware.
At its lowest level, the software takes the shape of an assembly language, which is a set
of machine-readable instructions. At the same time, the software is written in high-level
languages that are compiled or interpreted into machine language code at the highest
level.

When we talk about software applications, they are the backbone of computer operations. The
multiple software applications command a computer system what to do, when to do it, and how
to do it. For example, we can consider MS Word, Google Chrome, Photoshop as software
applications.

Today, we have a plethora of high-end technology and software at our disposal that define how
we live our lives and accommodate our ever-changing and expanding requirements.

Let’s go through different categories of application software.

General Application Software

General software is capable of completing a wide range of fundamental tasks. They

complete all of the general duties that a user needs to perform on the system.

Among these, a wide range of commonly used enterprise applications falls into this group.

These software applications are available in stand-alone versions or as part of application

suite packages. Some of the application software examples are Apache OpenOffice, WPS
Office, MS Office, and many more.

The general application software is divided further as follows:

a. Word Processing Software

The word processing software offers some special features, allowing
users to create, edit, delete, access, customize, and format text files.
Moreover, they also have some additional features like Word Art,
thesauruses, and many others to customize and make files more
attractive.

Furthermore, they also come up with publish and send email features to
create reports, manuals, books, and newsletters.

Word processing software application examples are WordPad, Open

Office Writer, MS Word, WPS Writer, etc.

b. Spreadsheet Software

A spreadsheet software application helps us to perform calculations

using various tools. The data are organized in tabular formats in the rows
and columns. The intersection of a row and column is known as a cell.

These cells store the data in the form of date, time, and numbers. Also,
they have various formulas on which various functions and calculations
are performed. In addition, they have some amazing features like tables,
3D graphs, charts, and many more. The financial sectors and businesses
generally use this software.

Spreadsheet software application examples are LibreOffice Calc, Google

Sheets, and MS Excel.

c. Database Software

A database is a set of relevant data stored in an organized manner. It’s

also known as a Database Management System (DBMS). It helps users
create, delete, edit, and extract data from the database.

system (DBMS) assists the application in retrieving the relevant data and
storing it once it is no longer in use.

d. Presentation Software

f. Educational Software

Educational software applications are very useful in the education

industry. This software offers tutorials and training, which are used in
teaching and self-learning. Google Earth and NASA World Wind are the
finest examples of education software.

g. Graphic Design Software

Graphic design software allows for editing digital images or videos in a

internet.

source can’t be viewed or seen by anyone, even if you own a premium
account. Most of the software packages we use in today’s world are part
of this closed source software.
