We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to all those people who have helped us in our project, for
their valuable guidance and experience which they poured on us in right direction. Their persistent encouragement,
everlasting experience and valuable inspiration helped us a lot in molding the present shape of the project.

We would like to express gratitude to our staff members for their support too.
INTRODUCTION

This is a project on CLAP SWITCH which can switch on/off any electrical circuit by the sound of a clap. The
operation of the circuit is simple. If we clap the lamp turns on and to switch it off clap again. The condenser
microphone picks up the sound of your claps, coughs, and the sound of that book knocked off the table. It
produces a small electrical signal which is amplified by the succeeding transistor stage. Two transistors cross
connected as a bistable multi vibrator change state at each signal. One of these transistors drives a heavier
transistor which controls a lamp.

This circuit can switch on and off a light, a fan, or a radio etc. by the sound of a clap This circuit is constructed
using basic electronic components like resistors, transistors, relay, transformer, capacitors. This circuit turns
„ON‟ light for the first clap. The light turns ON till the next clap. For the next clap the light turns OFF.
Basically, this is a Sound operated switch. The input component is a transducer that receives clap sound as
input and converts it to electrical pulse.

The basic idea of clap switch is that the electric microphone picks up the sound of your claps, coughs, and the
sound of that book knocked off the table. It produces a small electrical signal which is amplified by the
succeeding transistor stage. Two transistors cross connected as a bistable multi vibrator change state at each
signal. One of these transistors drives a heavier transistor which controls a lamp.
WORKING PRINCIPLE

The basic principle of this clap switch circuit is that it converts sound signal into electrical energy. The input
component is a transducer that receives clap sound as input and converts it to electrical pulse.

 At first, the clap sound sensed by the condenser mic.

 The condenser mic converts the sound into an electric pulse.
 Then the electric pulse amplified by the BC547 transistor.
 After that, the electrical pulse fed to the CLK pin of CD4017 IC.
 For each high pulse at CLK pin the state of the PIN 2 changes.
 When the PIN 2 becomes HIGH, the second transistor turns ON.
 If the second transistor turns ON the Relay also turns ON.
 Now when the condenser sense the second clap sound, the next high pulse received at CLK PIN.
 The PIN 2 changed the state (becomes LOW), so the second transistor turns OFF.
 So the Relay turns OFF and the load connected with the relay also turns OFF.

Components Details
Light Emitting Diode (LED)
A Light Emitting Diode (LED) is a semiconductor device that emits light when an electric current is passed
through it. LEDs are commonly used for lighting and indicators in a wide range of electronic devices and
applications.

The basic operation of an LED is based on the phenomenon of electroluminescence, where the movement
of electrons in a semiconductor material releases energy in the form of light. LEDs are made of a
semiconductor material such as gallium arsenide or gallium nitride, which is doped with impurities to
create a p-n junction.

10K Resistor

A 10K resistor is a type of fixed-value resistor with a resistance of 10,000 ohms. Resistors are electronic
components that are used to resist the flow of electrical current in a circuit. They are often used to limit
current, control voltage levels, and set the gain or bias of electronic components.

The resistance value of a resistor is measured in ohms (Ω). The higher the resistance value of a resistor, the
more it resists the flow of current through a circuit. A 10K resistor has a relatively high resistance value, which
means that it can limit the flow of current in a circuit effectively.
IN 4017 IC

The CD4017 IC is a CMOS Decade counter and it is used in the applications of low-range counting. This IC
will count from 0 to 10 and the circuit with an IC 4017 will save board space as well as the time necessary to
design the circuit. This decade counter is similar to Johnson 10 stage decade counter. This CMOS IC is
frequently used in designing the 10 LEDs-based circuits to run the light for beginners. So it is one of the most
flexible counters because it counts up to 10 & also it includes 10 separate outputs. This IC includes the counter
as well as the decoder.

This IC includes 16-pins where 10 & 16 pins are output pins. This IC counts for every positive otherwise
increasing edge input provided at the CLK input.

Here, the output begins from ‘0’ and moves to output ‘9. Once it reaches then the output will count at ‘9’ and
again it repeats from 0 & continues this revolution like a ring counter. On each count among 0 to 9, the output
pin can include a high state & the remaining output maintains low; simply one o/p will be high at a time.

PCB Board

The Printed Circuit Board (PCB) is an essential component of most electronic devices. The PCB
serves as a platform for the electronic components to be mounted and connected to each other,
forming a complete circuit. Here are some of the primary functions of a PCB:

Provides mechanical support: The PCB provides a solid base for the electronic components to be
mounted and held in place. It also provides structural support for the entire device.

.
Soldering Machine

A soldering machine is a machine used to solder electronic components onto a Printed Circuit
Board (PCB) or to solder wires together. The machine uses a combination of heat and a special
metal alloy called solder to join the components together.

There are several types of soldering machines, including:

 Wave soldering machines: These machines use a conveyor system to move PCBs over
a wave of molten solder. The components on the PCB are then soldered to the board as it
passes over the wave.

 Reflow soldering machines: These machines use a conveyor system to move the PCB
through a series of heating zones, where the solder paste is melted and solidified to join the
components to the board.

 Selective soldering machines: These machines use a nozzle to apply solder to specific
areas of the PCB. This method is used for PCBs with a mixture of through-hole and surface-
mount components.

 Handheld soldering machines: These machines are held in the operator's hand and
use a heating element to melt solder to join components.

Result of CLAP SWITCH
The clap activated switching device function properly by responding to both hand claps at about
three to four meters away and finger tap sound at very close range, since both are low frequency
sounds and produce the same pulse wave features. The resulting device is realizable, has good
reliability and its relatively inexpensive. Assemble the circuit on a general PCB and enclose it in
a suitable box. This circuit is very useful in field of electronic circuits. By using some
modification, it area of application can be extended in various fields. It can be used to raised
alarm in security system with a noise, and used at the place where silence needed.
