Question 1

A 4 Ω resistor is connected in series with a non-resistive coil of L = 0.4 H and


a capacitor of 100 µF to a 100V 50Hz supply. Calculate the total reactive
power absorbed by the network. (106.37 VARS)

Question 2

The figure below shows a series-parallel circuit.

Calculate the ammeter readings, the input power factor, the complex power
“S”, the true power “P” and the reactive power “Q” taken by the circuit. (Use
the conjugate method). Then, draw a power diagram and a detailed phasor
diagram for the circuit. (1.32 −38.2 A,0.9 −43.66, 0.42 −26.95 A ,
0.78 lag,132 38.2 VA, 103.733W, 81.629 VAR’S)

Question 3

Two impedances Z1 = ( 6 − j8 ) Ω and Z 2 = (16 + j12 ) Ω are connected in parallel. If


the total current of the combination is ( 20 + j10 ) A, calculate the complex power
taken by each impedance.
Question 4

Three loads are connected in parallel across 250∠0 supply. Load 1 takes a
power of 8kW at a lagging power factor of 0.8; load 2 a power of 12kW at a
leading power factor of 0.6 and load 3 a power of 5kW at a power factor of 0.5
lagging. What are the currents through each load? Give answers in polar
form.

b. Calculate the total reactive and apparent power.

d. Calculate the resistance of each bulb for the specified operating conditions.

f. Find the energy dissipated by the resistor over one full cycle of the input
voltage.
g. Find the energy stored or returned by the capacitor and the inductor over
one half-cycle of the power curve for each.

a. Find the average, reactive, and apparent power for the 20Ω resistor.
b. Repeat part (a) for the 10Ω inductive reactance.
c. Find the total number of watts, volt-amperes reactive, and volt-amperes,
and the power factor PF .

e. Verify that the result of part (b) is correct by finding the current Is using only
the input voltage E and the results of part (d). Compare the value of Is with
that obtained for part (b).
