Photosynthesis Question

1. Students carried out an experiment to investigate photosynthesis by attaching aluminum foil to parts of a leaf and leaving it in sunlight for days. They then tested the leaf for starch. 2. The experiment asked what steps would be involved in testing for starch, what the expected results would be if some leaf areas were covered by foil blocking light, and to draw a diagram labeling any color changes. 3. A second experiment had a student de-starch a plant and expose it to light, then test it for starch. This would show that starch is produced and stored by photosynthesis in plant leaves.

Worksheet-Homework-7th-Grade.pdf

1. Students in a class were asked to carry out the following experiment to investigate
photosynthesis:

- Attach a strip of aluminum foil to part of the upper and lower surfaces of a leaf of a
potted plant as shown in Figure I.
- Put the plant in a sunny place.
- After a few days remove/detach the leaf and test it for starch.

Figure 1. Showing leaf used in experiment

(i) List the steps involved in testing this leaf for the presence of starch.

(ii) What would you expect the results of this experiment and why?

Results:
Explanation:
(iii) Draw a diagram to show what the leaf would look like after the experiment is
over.
Label the colour changes to indicate which part was covered by the foil and which part
was not.
2. Isaac de-starches (starch removed from the leaf) a variegated plant and then exposes it
to light for several hours. She then tests a leaf from the plant for starch using iodine.

a) What are the expected results of her experiment? Explain your answer.

b) In what form is glucose, which is produced by photosynthesis, stored in plants?
