Typical Meals in Britain, Ukraine and the USA

Food is an important part of life. People eat daily and pay a lot of attention to it. The
usual meals in many countries are breakfast, lunch, dinner or supper. Other meals include brunch
(breakfast + lunch), tea (in Britain) or snack (bite).

Task 4. Connect the meal with its description

Meal Description
1. Breakfast a. A small portion of food, which people eat between meals.
2. Brunch b. A midday meal usually smaller than dinner.
3. Lunch c. It means "breaking the fast" of the night is the first meal taken after risi
4. Dinner from a night's sleep.
5. Supper d. A meal eaten between breakfast and lunch.
6. Tea e. A typical British meal at 5 o’clock.
7. Snack f. The last meal of the day.
(bite) g. Usually the name of the main meal of the day. In different cultures it ma
be the second, third or fourth meal of the day.

Meals in Britain. There are four meals a day in an English home: breakfast, lunch, tea,
and dinner. Breakfast is the first meal of the day. It is at about 8 o'clock in the morning, and
consists of porridge with milk and salt or sugar, eggs – boiled or fried, bread and butter with
marmalade or jam. Some people like to drink tea, but others prefer coffee. Instead of porridge
they may have fruit juice, or they may prefer biscuits.
The usual time for lunch is 1 o'clock. This meal starts with soup or fruit juice. Then
follows some meat or poultry with potatoes – boiled or fried, carrots and beans. Then a pudding
comes. Instead of the pudding they may prefer cheese and biscuits. Last of all coffee – black or
white. Englishmen often drink something at lunch. Water is usually on the table. Some prefer
juice or lemonade.
Tea is the third meal of the day. It is between 4 or 5 o'clock, the so-called 5 o'clock tea.
On the table there is tea, milk or cream, sugar, bread and butter, cakes and jam. Friends and
visitors are often present at tea.
Dinner is the fourth meal of the day. The usual time is about 7 o'clock, and all the
members of the family sit down together. Dinner usually consists of soup, fish or meat with
vegetables – potatoes, green beans, carrot and cabbage, sweet pudding, fruit salad, ice-cream or
cheese and biscuits. Then after a talk they have black or white coffee.

Meals in Ukraine. The usual meals in Ukraine are breakfast, dinner and supper.
Ukrainians also love snacks to fill the time between the meals. In Ukraine people may have
anything for breakfast; sandwiches and coffee are very popular. Also they eat cereals with milk,
toasts or pancakes.

Lunch is the biggest meal of the day. Very often it consists of three courses – a soup or
borshch, a meat or fish with salad, pasta or potatoes. Often there will be a salad, a lot of bread,
of course, and something to drink. At four or five the Ukrainians may have a snack or a bite:
waffles, cakes with juice, tea or cocoa.

Supper in Ukraine is usually at seven, when people come from work. It may consist of
meat or fish dishes, salads and something to drink. Often Ukrainians eat traditional food such as
cabbage rolls, dumplings or pancakes.

Meals in the USA are called breakfast, lunch and dinner. A traditional American
breakfast is usually eggs prepared sunny side up, scrambled, or as an omelet, with bacon, ham, or
sausage, toasted bread (spread with butter, jam, peanut butter, or honey), and hash browns. Also
there may be pancakes or waffles with maple syrup. Orange juice and coffee are the most
popular drinks.
The most traditional all-American lunch is a burger and fries with a Coke to drink. Other
popular options are pizza, hot dogs, sandwiches, salads, and soups.
The most common and traditional dinner is meat with potatoes and other vegetables.
The meat is almost always beef, poultry, or pork. Turkey and fish can be served as well. Peas,
green beans, carrots, or corn are usually the second vegetable. Cow's milk and bread with butter
is usually served with this meal as well.
Desserts include pie, especially apple (which is an American classic), cookies (chocolate
chip is the most common), ice cream, or frosted cake.

However, there is no "typical American" food, since the USA is a home of many cultures. In
Arizona, Mexican cuisine is popular. In Florida - Cuban cuisine. Other popular cuisines are
Chinese, Italian, Indian and Korean.
