2.4 Select Life Table

1) Select life tables reflect mortality rates during a selected period and can be used to calculate survival probabilities. 2) Examples show how to calculate survival probabilities for individuals selected d years ago using the general formula of multiplying survival probabilities from the select life table. 3) Survival probabilities are needed to model how likely individuals selected in the past are to survive into the future.

Select life table
• Why we need life table?
• It can be used to calculate
probabilities for non-negative
values of 𝑡, 𝑢 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑥.
• Select life table will reflect
duration and age during the select
period.
• Life table within the ultimate
part of the model:
𝑙𝑦 = 𝑦−(𝑥0 +𝑑)𝑝𝑥0 +𝑑 . 𝑙𝑥0+𝑑 𝑥0 + 𝑑 𝑥 𝑦
= 𝑦−𝑥0 −𝑑𝑝 𝑥0 +𝑑 . 𝑙𝑥0+𝑑

Note:
𝑙𝑦 = The expected # of survivors to age y out of 𝑙𝑥 lives
𝑥0 𝑥0 + 𝑑 𝑦 currently age 𝑥 (< 𝑦), who where select at least d years ago
Select life table
• Life table within the select period.
Example: Select period (SP) is t-years / select t years ago.
For 𝑥 ≥ 𝑥0 and 0 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 𝑑

𝑙𝑥+𝑑 = 𝑙 𝑥 +𝑡 . 𝑑−𝑡𝑝 𝑥 +𝑡 𝑥0 𝑥 𝑥 +t 𝑥+𝑑

𝑙 𝑥 +𝑡 =
