Assignment III of optics and Fiber Optic Communications (15%)
Academic Year: 2022/ Semester: II
Give short and brief answer for the following questions. (5%)
1. Explain the general operating principle of the waveguide in fiber optic
communication systems.
2. List the most important sources of attenuation and all types of dispersion in
optical fibers. Please provide their definitions.
3. Write at least two similarities and differences between spontaneous and
stimulated emissions processes.
4. Differentiate between light emitting diodes and Laser diodes.
5. Write the four unique properties of laser beams and explain each of them by
supporting with suitable pictures.
Work out the following problems and show all the necessary (10%)
1. A silica optical fiber with a core diameter large enough to be considered by
ray theory analysis has a core refractive index of 1.50 and a cladding refractive
index of 1.47. Determine: (a) the critical angle at the core–cladding interface;
(b) the NA for the fiber; (c) the acceptance angle in air for the fiber.
2. A laser diode emits light at a wavelength of 1.55µm. The light is coupled in
an optical fiber. Calculate the wavelength, the speed and the frequency of the
light in the optical fiber, which has a refractive index of 1.45.

3. What is the pulse spreading when a laser diode having a 2 nm spectral width
is used? Find the material-dispersion-induced pulse spreading at 1550 nm for
an LED with a 75 nm spectral width.
4. An InGaAs PIN photodiode has the following parameters at a wavelength of
1300 nm: ID = 4 nA, η = 0.9, RL = 1000 Ω and the surface leakage current is
negligible. The incident optical power is 300 nW (- 35 dBm) the receiver
bandwidth is 20 MHz. Find the various noise terms of the receiver.
5. A transmitter has an output power of 0.1 mW. It is used with a fiber having
NA = 0.25, attenuation of 6 dB/km and length 0.5 km. The link contains two
connectors of 2 dB average loss. The receiver has a minimum acceptable
power (sensitivity) of – 35 dBm. The designer has allowed a 4 dB margin.
Calculate the link power budget.
