Summer Internship Program (SIP)

Guidelines 2023

Student Handbook
PGDM/PGDM(HRM)/PGDM(B&FS)
Course Code: Summer Internship Program
Course Credits: Three Credits

Preamble:

The Summer Internship Program (SIP) forms an important component of education at International
Management Institute New Delhi (IMI New Delhi). At IMI New Delhi, students are expected to
undertake an 8 to 10 weeks internship at an organization in the period following close of Term III
and before the commencement of Term IV.

This internship requires the students to undergo the rigor of a professional environment and get to
experience business realities in both form and substance. In the process, it provides the students with
an opportunity to satisfy their keenness to learn while exposing them to technical skills. It also helps
them acquire social skills by drawing them into communication with outside professionals for
seeking information.

For proper coordination and ensuring an organized and smooth conduct of the SIP, each student
would be assigned a Faculty Mentor (FM)  from  the  Institute.  Apart from the FM, every student
will be directed under the guidance of a Corporate Mentor (CM) a representative of the
industry/organization in which the student is interning during the course of SIP. The FM will
coordinate with the CM, facilitated with the help of the intern, in monitoring the student's progress.

Types of Assignments and Report Submission

SIP is a vehicle for introducing students to real-life work culture, which cannot be simulated in
the classroom. The assignments which the students undertake must necessarily be those of
direct interest to the host organization.

The students are encouraged to take up assignments which are multi-disciplinary, involve team
effort, are mission and goal oriented, and are time bound. It is to be noted that solutions to
various problems confronted in the assignment might be open ended, involving an element of
decision making in the face of insufficient data and uncertain parameters.
Importance of Discipline and Conduct

1. As Summer Interns, the students should remember that they are placed in the role of
ambassadors of IMI New Delhi.
2. The Institute always remains grateful to the students for professional and social
imprints of high standards that they leave in their respective organizations for the
internship.
3. The Institute also expects that the students shall at all times during SIP conform to the
rules and regulations of their place of work.
4. The students should abide by the dress code and other professional norms of their
Internship organization.
5. It is particularly important to be regular, punctual and obedient at work. It is expected that
the students ensure strict adherence to the timings of the organizations.
6. During the period of SIP, the students shall be subject to the leave rules of the
organization they are working for.
7. Unprofessional behavior, misconduct, indiscipline, irregularity at work or unsatisfactory
progress at work will lead to the cancellation of SIP registration.
8. Besides this, the Institute may take any other form of disciplinary action, which it might
deem fit to impose on the defaulters.
9. In case any form of indiscipline is reported by the organization it will be dealt with
disqualification of the student from the SIP process.

Evaluation Criteria for Summer Internship Program (SIP)

The SIP is equivalent to a three credit course, and integral to PGDM/PGDM(HRM)/

PGDM(B&FS) Programs. The final evaluation (which includes the final project report and
presentation at the Institute) of each student will be conducted by a panel of IMI faculty including
the FM for the project. Detailed guidelines for the presentation will be shared with you before the
date of the presentation. The grades evaluation for the program will be based on the following
four components:

Component Weightage
Final Project Report 30%
Project Presentation 30%
Viva (as part of the presentation) 20%
Assessment by the Corporate Mentor 20%
Important:

It is to be noted that the assessment of the corporate mentor carries a 20% weightage. The assessment
should reach the Institute before the student leaves his/her respective host organization after the
successful completion of SIP. It will be the responsibility of the student to ensure that the
Company Appraisal reaches the Institute on time and the Institute will not entertain any excuse
on this aspect of evaluation.

Evaluation Criteria: The project appraisal will include following parameters:

1. The student’s completion of the assigned project and completion certificate/mail.

2. U nderstanding of the functional working of the department in which they worked and its
integration with other departments within the organization.
3. Understanding of the relevance of the project in the context of the company’s objective or
vision/mission and the current business environment.

APPENDIX D:
Primary Data Guidelines

As many of the students will be required to do surveys for their summer projects, here are a few
broad guidelines for the survey methodology, which the students need to keep in mind.
1. When developing and designing questionnaires, care needs to be taken to ensure that:
 Analysis plan is considered while formulating the questions in the questionnaire
 Double barrel questions (questions intending to elicit response on more than one issue) are
avoided
 Questions are effective, clear and unambiguous
 Appropriate use is made of a structured or semi-structured approach
 Question sequence is logical
 Bias is eliminated
 Structure and length of a questionnaire suits the intended audience
 Questions are focused and relevant
 The final document is user – friendly
2. Data Collection Methodologies
The most appropriate and cost-effective method of data collection may be chosen in
accordance with the specific requirements of a particular survey. However, the primary data
collection methodologies we employ are face-to-face, telephonic and self-completion (paper and
Internet based) research.
Face-to-face Research: The choices are: Face-to-face interviewing, conduct hall tests, street
surveys, specific location and in-home interviews. Usage of face-to-face research include;
 Product testing
 New Product Development research
 Pricing studies
 Design/ packaging research
 Concept testing
 Exit surveys
 Pre/ post advertising awareness/ effectiveness Usage & attitude surveys
 Customer satisfaction studies
 Pre-press campaigns
 Pre & post PR effectiveness
Telephone Research
Telephone research can be stand-alone or the co-instrument to the Face – to – face
research. It is highly useful where respondent is busy and unreachable / unapproachable
otherwise. Interviewers must be trained at communicating through telephone. Particular
uses of telephone research include:
New Product Development research
 Pre & post advertising awareness/ effectiveness
 Usage & attitude surveys
 Concept testing
 Customer satisfaction studies
 Pre-press campaigns
 Pre & post PR effectiveness
 Editorial research
 Post exhibition research
 Panel research
Internet based Self-completion Research
With improvements in technology and Internet software, the rising penetration of
computers and the increased ability of users this method of research has become
increasingly popular. In addition, given the technically driven environment in which we
live, there is an expectation from respondents that they should be able to complete a
survey electronically. Particular advantages of Internet based research include:
Response is immediate and closed data can be analyzed collection. promptly
following

Studies have shown high response rates and quality open-ended responses.
This methodology is not only used for assessing web site and Internet related issues but
can be used to research many areas, potentially restricted only by target sample.

Paper based Self-completion Research

There are a variety of ways in which self-completion questionnaires may reach their
target audience;
-By post, fax, or e-mail.
-By hand for self-completion
Particular uses of self-completion include Reader profile surveys, Editorial research.
