FIRST AID
FIRST AID IN CASE OF ELECTRIC SHOCK

DO NOT TOUCH THE VICTIM WITH YOUR BARE HANDS until the circuit is broken. SWITCH OFF. If this is not possible,
PROTECT YOURSELF with DRY insulating material and pull the victim clear of the conductor.

If breathing has stopped, indicated by unconsciousness, lack of respiratory movements and a

`blue` look to cheeks, lips, ears and nails, START RESUSCITATION AT ONCE.

EMERGENCY RESUSCITATION - THE EXPIRED AIR METHOD

(Approved by the Royal Life Saving Society)

1. If possible, lie the victim on his back with his head slightly higher than his feet. Clear
the mouth and throat of any obvious obstruction.

2. Kneel on one side of the victim, level with his head. LIFT THE JAW AND TILT THE
HEAD BACK AS FAR AS POSSIBLE (Figs. 1a and 1b)

3. One of the following may happen:

(a) breathing may begin and consciousness return.
(b) breathing may begin but consciousness NOT return. Turn the victim on his
side and ensure that the airway is kept clear.
(c) breathing may return but be NOISY which means that the airway is not fully
clear. Try to the clear the airway.

4. IF THERE IS NO SIGN OF BREATHING:

(a) Check that the head is still tilted back.
(b) Take a deep breath.
(c) Pinch the victim‟s nose and blow firmly into his mouth (Fig. 2). As you do, the
chest will RISE.
(d) Turn your head away and take another breath, watching for the chest to FALL
(Fig. 3).

5. Start with four quick breaths and then continue with one breath every five seconds
(i.e. 12 times a minute). This should be continued until the victim revives or a
doctor certifies death.

6. As consciousness returns the victim will start to breathe on his own, and a `pink`
colour replaces the `blue` look: this is the time to stop resuscitation Continue to
hold his chin up and so keep the airway clear.

7. In the case of injuries to the mouth, it may be necessary to use mouth-to-nose

resuscitation. Seal the victim‟s mouth with your cheek and blow firmly into his nose,
proceeding as above.

8. In the case of severe facial injuries it may be necessary to do a manual method of artificial respiration (Silvester-
Brosch or Holger Nielsen). Briefly, these methods apply compression to the ribcage with the victim lying on his
back (S-B) or face down (H.N.) with associated movement of his arms up and out. The cycle of movement should
take about five seconds, i.e. the normal breathing phase.

9.Whatever the method, it is ESSENTIAL to commence resuscitation WITHOUT DELAY and to send for medical
assistance immediately.
TREATMENT FOR BURNS
If the victim is also suffering from burns, then, without hindrance to resuscitation, observe the following:

(a) DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE CLOTHING ADHERING TO THE BURN.

(b) If possible alleviate the pain from the burnt part by immersing in cold water.
(c) If help as available or as soon as resuscitation is no longer required the wound should be covered with a DRY
clean dressing.
(d) Oil or grease in any form should not be applied.
(e) If severely burnt, get the victim to hospital immediately.

Further details of charts and books on emergency resuscitation may be obtained from:

1. INTRODUCTION

The Advent Lynx 5100 IP series Digital Video Exciters are a combined HD / SD MPEG
Encoder, Modulator and integral serial HPA controller, all contained within a single ½
width 1U-rack unit.

This is part of the Lynx range of IP enabled products from the Vislink Group of
companies.

An additional model Lynx 1051 Encoder, branded „Link Research‟ (part of the Vislink Group),
provides the same functionality as the Advent Lynx 5100 Exciter except for the provision of
HPA control. The Lynx 1051 Encoder does have an additional ASI output.

This manual will refer to the Lynx 5100 Exciter throughout but is equally applicable to the
Lynx 1051 Encoder, distinct differences will be highlighted.

The Lynx 5100 Exciter contains all the original features of the DVE5000, with the addition of
IP Video connectivity.

An additional Ethernet connector provides IP Video connectivity, with the flexibility to operate
the encapsulation / de-encapsulation process with internal MPEG2 A/V encoding or,
independently from the encoding process.

The IP streaming output can be sourced from the inbuilt video encoder or from an external
ASI source; the output will be packetized ASI in an Ethernet format.

The IP streaming input (same connector that can be used as the output at the same time)
can receive IP encapsulated ASI and convert back to ASI. This ASI can either be a second
source to the „local‟ encoder, forming a multiplex with it, or provide an independent ASI
output.

A clear graphical „routing‟ page on the in-built web-browser interface gives total control of all
the possible combinations.

This common control page also contains automatic links to all adjustable parameters of the
Lynx 5100 Exciter at a single „click‟.

H.264 encoding is handled either by the addition of a Fujitsu IP900E Encoder, or from
September 2011 by the integral encoder.

The integral H.264 is offered as an up-grade to existing product – Vislink part number
9003175.

When using an external Fujitsu IP900 the Lynx 5100 Exciter sets up and controls the Fujitsu
transparently to the operator.

The IP900E has one stereo pair of audio processing; with the addition of encoder module in
the Lynx 5100 Exciter, this is can be expanded to 4 pairs in total.

A separate section in this manual relates to the IP900E.

Output options include:

“70MHz” 52 - 88MHz
“L- Band” 950 – 1750MHz
“ASI” 270Mb/s to ISO / IEC 13818-2 188bytes
L1051 unit Other bands available from 950MHz – 7GHz

L-Band models include an L-band input for the combining of external communications
equipment or other DVE‟s for MCPC applications.
A monitor output is also provided for connecting to an IRD or spectrum analyser. L-Band
monitoring is performed after “combining”.
L-Band output is tuneable from 950 to 1750MHz in 1 KHz steps, and the amplitude can be
varied over a 40dB range. The maximum output is +5dBm.
The Lynx 5100 Exciter provides, at L-Band, QPSK DVB-S modulation and optionally can
provide additional 8PSK and 16QAM modulation schemes.
DVBS-2 can also be provided, optionally, at QPSK / 8PSK / 16APSK / 32APSK
An optional 70 MHz output is provided which can provide DVB-T / LMS-T* / DVB-S / DVBS-2
modulation schemes.
The 70MHz output is tuneable (dependant on symbol rate / bandwidth) from 52 MHz to
88MHz in 1 KHz steps. Amplitude can be controlled by up to 12dB‟s dependant on
modulation scheme.
The 70MHz output is not available at the same time as the L-Band output; in L-band mode
the 70MHz connector becomes the ASI output.

The Lynx 1051 Encoder has the option of outputs in the S and C wireless camera bands –
please contact factory for further detail.
The basic model provides PAL / NTSC analogue standard definition source encoding at
4:2:0 with up to 2 channels of compressed / linear audio.
Options available can provide encoding at High Definition, 4:2:2, SDI video input with
embedded audio, eight channel AES / EBU digital audio inputs, Dolby E pass-thru‟, BISS
and EBS (proprietary) conditional access, and a very low delay mode at <80mS (SD).
Similarly options are available to provide an ASI input for further multiplexing with other
exciter units or existing ASI streams.
IP streaming OUT and IP receiving IN are both chargeable licensed options.
Video encoding at 4:2:2 can be up to 50MB/s (SD), 80MB/s (HD) when using internal
modulator and up to 100MB/s (HD) in ASI output mode.
H.264 options up to High profile422 at Level 4.0, 27Mb/s are available.
This manual provides information on the complete range available; note that not all options
are fitted at time of manufacture, and may require a return to factory for future hardware up-
grades. Purchases of additional licence keys to enable functions not initially ordered may be
entered in the field. Firmware up-grades may be offered from time to time for the customer
to download into the Lynx 5100 Exciter to add additional features as they become available.
Full remote control can be made either by RS232/485, SNMP or the in-built Web Browser.
Due to continual design improvements some features described may be modified or added
to.
Contact factory, customer support or agent if any query arises.

following the following range:
L*D ≤100 1 ≤ L ≤ 20 4 ≤ D

Note: the Lynx 5100 Exciter can stream or receive a stream to the above specification
converting to or from ASI.
Both the IP IN (the extraction of ASI from an IP Video stream) and IP OUT (encapsulation of
ASI into Ethernet) are chargeable licensed options.
Licensing can be entered by the operator in the field – contact factory for further information
& pricing.

IP IN can be used as an external source the encoder and multiplexed with the internal
MPEG2 encoder to form two services.
With the Fujitsu IP900E H.264 encoder, this IP IN function is used as the interface between
the two units.

IP OUT function enables ASI to be transmitted over Ethernet networks rather than RF over
satellite or microwave.
Two IP streams can be generated going to 2 different IP locations.
The source of IP for these 2 streams can independently come from either the internal
MPEG2 encoder (after multiplexer, so could be 2 or more services) or the external ASI
connector.
So the Lynx 5100 Exciter could be used as a standalone external ASI to IP encapsulator at
the same time as streaming the output of the internal encoder, to another IP destination.

4.3. AC POWER
Power in the range 90 – 264Vac is connected by means of a 3-pin IEC connector at the rear
panel.
Live & Neutral conductor fusing is employed.
The two fuses integrated into the IEC connector should be ceramic at T5A rating each.
The total power consumption is typically less than 60watts.

 External IEC mains lead must be un-plugged before removal of the lid – dangerous voltages
enclosed.

 NOTE: A separate EMC earth should be connected to the earth point provided.

4.4. RF 1 OUTPUT
This 50R N-type connector provides the prime RF output at L-band.
Maximum output is +5dBm, with a 40dB control range. Maximum output can be set by menu
function to -5dBm.

 CAUTION: This connector can have DC present, selectable from the “RF OPTIONS” “BUC
DC” menu. This will always have DC present if HPA control via L-Band is turned on.

4.5. RF2 / MONITOR OUTPUT

This 50R N-type connector provides at L-band –20dB+/-3dB reduced output relative to the L-
band at the RF connector.
This monitor connector is provided to connect to a local IRD or spectrum analyser.
NOTE:
No DC is present at this connector.

4.6. ASI INPUT

This 75R BNC enables an external ASI stream to be multiplexed with the internal “service” of
the exciter.
The internal service (encoder) may be turned off from the REMUX menu option, so that the
Lynx 5100 Exciter is used just as a „modulator‟.
See multiplexer option in “Operation Guide” section of this manual.

4.7. CVBS INPUT (SD ONLY)

This 75R BNC is the analogue video input at 1volt peak to peak, to the exciter.
PAL and NTSC formats are supported.

LYNX 5100 Exciter/1051 Encoder – 600094 Page 30 of 128

4.8. HDSDI (HD) SDI (SD OPTION) INPUT
This 75R BNC is the input connector for serial digital video, conforming to ITU-R BT656 or
ANSI/SMPTE 259M level C @ 270Mb/s for SD. Max cable length 300 Metres.
PAL and NTSC formats are supported, which can contain 4 channels (2 stereo) of embedded
audio.
For HD the connector carries HDSDI to SMPTE 292M @ 1.485 Gbit/s max cable 100 Metres.
4.9. ASI / IF OUTPUT
Labelled ASI / IF OUT (IF OUT on 1051)
This 75R BNC is used to provide an ASI stream, when the unit output type is L-Band or ASI;
This can be sent to another exciter to form a multiplex or used to drive an external modulator.
The source for the output connector can be External ASI (the physical rear panel connector for
loop thru‟s applications), Extracted from IP or from the internal MPEG2 encoder (after the
multiplexer)
ASI output format can be 188 or 204 byte mode, when output is from the multiplexer.

Alternatively this connector provides a 70MHz signal.

The modulation type of the 70MHz output may be DVBS, DVBS-2, DVB-T or LMS-T; modulation
parameters are listed in the specifications above.

The choice of ASI or IF is made from the output mode menu option; in ASI or L-Band mode it is
ASI, in 70MHz it becomes an RF output.
NOTE. The 1051 has independent outputs for 70MHz and ASI (ASI 2 is controlled by the
routing function of the web browser or front panel control.
The 1051 model also provides an additional ASI output (1) which is permanently connected to
the MPEG2 encoder output after multiplexer.

4.10. AUX I/P

This 50R TNC provides an 950 - 1750MHz input port allowing this signal or signals to be
combined with the internal MPEG encoder / modulator/ L-band up-converter.

The combiner is “passive” to prevent corruption of the combined signal should the Lynx 5100
Exciter fail. The combiner has a loss of approximately 6dB and this should be allowed for in the
settings of external additional carrier(s).

Note that the combiner input should be terminated with 50R.

The L-band monitor output comes after the combining process.

LYNX 5100 Exciter/1051 Encoder – 600094 Page 31 of 128

4.11. ETHERNET / USB PORTS
The Ethernet port is used for remote control of the Lynx 5100 Exciter.
For further information please contact Advent Communications.

The USB ports are provided to enable the Lynx 5100 Exciter to have any of the internal
programmable parts up-graded in the field.

See Appendix for up-grade procedure

Software up-grade files can be sent to customers for transfer onto a USB memory device.
Inserting the USB device into the rear and then powering the unit will cause the unit to
automatically down load from the memory device.
Notes: combined MP3 player / memory sticks are not compatible with the Lynx 5100 Exciter.
Ensure only one up-grade version is present on the USB stick.

LYNX 5100 Exciter/1051 Encoder – 600094 Page 32 of 128

4.12. IP VIDEO
This Ethernet port is used for “IP encapsulated” ASI transport streams.
The port is compatible with 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet.

ASI to IP Video
It is possible to output over Ethernet, 2 ASI‟s encapsulated in IP; these are controlled by the
“ASI to IP channel 1” and “ASI to IP channel 2” menus.
The source of the ASI, to be encapsulated, is defined by menu option “ASI SRC”.
This can be either from, the external ASI connector “EXT ASI”, the output of the internal
encoder “MUX O/P” or “OFF”.

Each channel needs to have a destination „address‟ defined to state where the Ethernet packets
are to be directed – this is entered at “DEST IP”.
The destination addresses may be same, pointing to the same physical IP receiver, but if the
two channels are in use, the “PORT” numbers must be different.
In this case, the IP receiver must be set to receive one or the other ports.
NOTE the PORT address + 2 is used by the error correction function so for example if the port
is set to 1000 for channel 1 then channel 2 must NOT use port 1002.

If the destination IP addresses are different on each channel, the port addresses may be the
same.
In this case, two IP receivers can receive the two possible IP outputs from the Lynx 5100
Exciter.

The two channels can be sourced independently, so for example Channel 1 could be sourced
from external ASI and streamed to a location, whilst separately an encoded stream could be
sent to another location, using Channel 2.

As the source of the IP encapsulator could be the output of the internal encoder, which in turn
could be a multiplex of several ASI‟s; multiple ASI channels can be streamed over one IP path.
These can be decoded separately at a remote location using „service names‟ to extract the
various services in the same manner as if it was a direct ASI connection.
Approximately 80Mb/s total can be streamed over 100M Ethernet, dependant on the level of
FEC applied.
Encapsulation type “ENC TYP” the choices are UDP only or RTP/UDP.

To cross networks, the „IP video‟ can be configured using the default gateway and sub-net
mask setup parameters.

LYNX 5100 Exciter/1051 Encoder – 600094 Page 33 of 128

IP to ASI
ASI can be de-encapsulated from an incoming IP stream by selecting the appropriate PORT
number.
The external IP source should have its destination address to be that of the „Ethernet Phy‟ of
the receiving Lynx 5100 Exciter; this is set on the IP Ethernet menu.

IP IN can be used as an external source the encoder and multiplexed with the internal MPEG2
encoder to form two services.
With the Fujitsu IP900E H.264 encoder, this IP IN function is used as the interface between the
two units.

IP Video can be converted independently of the encoding functions of the Lynx 5100 Exciter, by
selecting the units ASI output source selection to be IP.

Audio Standard: Choices are DVB / IRIB

Mpeg Layer 2 DVB is for general use.
Mpeg Layer 2 IRIB covers the extension to the DVB specification used by Japanese IRD
manufacturers.
The IRIB format is DVB compliant but some early IRD‟s that have not been software up-graded
can have issues with the extended specification.

HD Coding: HD only – In DVBS / S2 the encoder it is recommended to use Frame encoding

mode to deal with interoperability issues with early Tandberg TT1282 & RX1290 IRD‟s that
do not support Field encoding in 422.
When the DVE has DVB-T or ASI output mode set then coding may be changed to Field to
work with Vislink / Link Research Ltd, wireless camera receivers.
DELAY: (SD only) choices are normal or low (licenced option)

Aspect ratio: SD only - selectable 4:3 or 16:9 this sends a signal to the IRD to indicate the
picture format for signal identification throughout the transmission chain. This command does
NOT change the actual aspect ratio of the picture content.

VBI: (SD ONLY) Choices are ON or OFF; Use up / down arrow keys to select, press ENTER
to confirm or ESCAPE to cancel selection.
This enables the passing of VBI data.

VBI Compression: (SD Only) This setting determines the amount of compression applied to
the VBI data;
the higher the value the more the compression and lower bandwidth, but recovery of the data
at the receive IRD may be corrupted. Select a value where the data is passed correctly
without consuming video bandwidth.

6.1.3 AUDIO SETUP
Under this menu item there are 2 options MPEG-2 AUDIO or H.264 AUDIO.
6.1.4 MPEG-2 AUDIO
The following options will be displayed –
AUDIO INPUTS:
AUDIO PIDS:
AUDIO DELAY:
Overview -
A total of 4 inputs A, B, C, D (4 stereo pairs / 8 channels) may be processed by the Lynx 5100
Exciter.

Audios A and B may be used from a combination of sources, for example Audio A may come
from the embedded (HD)SDI signal and Audio B from the Analogue inputs.

Audios A and B may have “compression” applied, which can be either Mpeg Layer 1 or Mpeg
Layer 2.
Only one compression scheme is allowed at a time; Audio A setting will override Audio B setting
if an attempt to select differing compressions is made.
Audios A and B may also be used in Linear PCM or Dolby modes, and may be used in addition
to compression on the other channel pair.
Audios C and D may only come from an embedded source in SDI or HDSDI.
Audio C may be set to Layer 2 compression – in this case Audio D is disabled.
If Audio C is set to Linear or Dolby E then Audio D is enabled for Linear or Dolby E.

These channels are inhibited if Audios A & B are both set to Mpeg Layer 1.

The tables below show the allowable combinations of Layer 1, Layer 2, Linear PCM and Dolby
settings related to inputs A, B, C, D. -

When sourcing from (HD)SDI, any of the 4 “groups” in the video signal may be selected.
Note; The 4 channels in a group are allocated to a two of the input pairs and cannot be
separated eg if input A and B are both set to (HD)SDI embedded source „group 1‟ then
channels 1 & 2 of the group are routed to A and channels 3 & 4 of the group are routed to B.
A & B are linked, C & D are linked, but pairs AB CD operate independently.
Care should be made in selection as A can override B or vice versa, as can C override D.

IP OPTIONS

By using the up / down arrow keys, highlight IP OPTIONS and press ENTER key.

This screen will be displayed: -

ASI TO IP VIDEO:
IP VIDEO TO ASI:

These menus controls the functions of the IP encapsulation (TX) and de-encapsulation (RX) of
ASI.

ASI TO IP VIDEO: Under this menu are the controls for the 2 possible IP streams.
It is possible to output 2 ASI‟s encapsulated in IP, as controlled “ASI to IP channel 1” and “ASI
to IP channel 2” menus.

The source of the ASI to be encapsulated is defined by menu option “SOURCE”.

This can be either from, the external ASI connector “External ASI”, the output of the internal
encoder “Internal ASI” or “OFF”.

Each channel needs to have a destination „address‟ defined – this is entered at “DEST IP”.
The destination addresses may be same, pointing to the same physical IP receiver, but if two
channels are in use the “PORT” numbers must be different.

To cross networks, the „IP video‟ port can be configured using the „default gateway‟ and „sub-
net mask‟ setup parameters.

CHANNEL 1(2) ASI to IP
SOURCE: This selects the ASI signal source that can be streamed as IP. Choices are OFF,
Internal ASI (from the video encoder after multiplexer), or External ASI (the physical rear panel
connector).
DEST IP: This is the destination IP address to which to stream to.
Eg to stream to a PC or receiving device with an IP address of 192.168.0.98, this destination
address should be set to 192.168.0.98.
DEST Port: This is the destination „port‟ number.
FEC: Choices are Enable or Disable.
MORE:> if FEC is enabled the following menus will be available –
DEST FEC d (row):
DEST FEC l (column):
Encap Type: the choices are UDP only or RTP/UDP.
TS PKTs per IP: defines the number of ASI packets contained within one IP packet. The
range is 1 to 7. 1 is most robust but least efficient. 7 is least robust but most efficient for the
available bandwidth.

This unit uses ProMpeg error correction, which on perfect networks may be turned off to
preserve bandwidth.

With FEC enabled, L & D values may be set to control error correction robustness.
The L and D values have defined limits, setting outside the combination limits will be rejected.
Limits are L * D <= 100, L in the range 1 to 20, D in the range 4 to 20.
The following table gives some examples of the relationship between L & D, latency and
number of IP packets that can be recovered.
This is based on 7 ASI packets per IP packet.

7. Operation procedure - HPA CONTROL (not Lynx 1051 Encoder)
7.1. INTRODUCTION

The Lynx 5100 Exciter integrates a serial controller for up to two amplifiers, with protocol
conversion for a wide range of HPA / SSPA types.

The control may be via direct RS485 connection at the rear panel D-Type or modulated onto the
L-Band RF output.
The modulated signal can be decoded by AUC5000 block upconverter products from Advent.
The HPA control would be connected to the block up-converter in this configuration;
a single L-band cable is the only required connection between the Lynx 5100 Exciter and the
HPA (via the up-converter).

„Hot Keys‟ are provided on the front panel to directly control the operation of the
amplifier between “transmit” and “standby” functions.
Note: SSPA‟s do not have “standby” – „off‟ state is the equivalent.

Led‟s are provided for displaying the status of the amplifier(s) at a glance -

STATUS (hpa) - when illuminated green indicates power is applied to the HPA and is
functioning. If illuminated red, this indicates a fault with the HPA.

FTD / STBY / Tx- when flashing amber, HPA is in filament time delay (FTD) going into „standby‟
when warmed up. If flashing green, HPA is in filament time delay going into „transmit‟ when
warmed up.
Note: FTD is only applicable to TWTA based amplifiers.

It is recommended that the Lynx 5100 Exciter is set to -10dB output level and the gains of the
block upconverter (BUC) and the HPA set for „saturation‟ at this drive level. This will optimise
the noise vs dynamic range of the signal throughout the system.

HPA A (B) Gain: This menu option sets the gain of the HPA(S) with an adjacent readout
of actual output power shown next to the gain adjusting parameter.

BUC Gain: This menu controls the gain of the external block upconverter.
This should be set with the Lynx 5100 Exciter output set to -10dB on font panel setting and the
BUC gain adjusted for maximum output but with minimal distortion (re-growth shoulders on a
modulated carrier).
This function is not available in RS485 mode, only L-Band control mode with AUC5000,
AUC5814 block up-converter products from Advent.

Output Level: This menu controls the drive level from the Lynx 5100 Exciter at L-band.

8. REMOTE CONTROL (RS232 /485)
8.1. INTRODUCTION
This equipment is designed to be operated either locally (using the front panel) and/or
remotely using remote control and monitoring software (not supplied) running on a PC
platform. The remote command set enables control of all operational functions of the unit
and querying of the current status of the unit.
The complete list of commands and queries available with this unit is listed in the following
tables.

8.2. MONITOR & CONTROL CONNECTOR

This connection is via a male 15-way D connector.
The pin assignments are defined below -
15-way D-male pin definition:

8.3. BAUD RATE / ADDRESS

Baud Rate
This unit supports the following baud rates:
 9600
 4800
 2400
This is settable from the front panel. It is essential that all units connected on the same
RS485 bus be set to the same baud rate.
Address -
When being controlled remotely, all units on the bus must be allocated a unique address.
When multiple units are connected on the same bus, it is essential that each be provided
with a unique address otherwise communications will be corrupted.
The address is normally settable from the front panel, although some units are factory
configured to a preset address.
Valid addresses are in the range 1 – 255.

LYNX 5100 Exciter/1051 Encoder – 600094 Page 82 of 128

8.4. SETUP INSTRUCTIONS
a) Connect a suitable cable between the PC COM port and the RC&M connector at the
rear panel of the Lynx 5100 Exciter unit.
The pin connections to be used are shown in the above section.

The selection of RS232 or RS485 is controlled by pin 13 of the RC&M connector. OPEN
Circuit = RS485, GND =RS232
b) From the unit front panel, set the following parameters:
 Address
 Baud rate
These can be accessed from the REMOTE INTERFACE menu.
c) Start the remote control and monitoring software (not supplied) and set the following
parameters:
 Comm port
 Address (must be the same as the unit to be controlled)
 Baud rate (must be the same as the unit to be controlled)
 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit
Once these are set correctly then the PC should be able to communicate with the unit.

8.5. PACKET STRUCTURE
This product uses a non-printable packet format. This means that the full range of 255
ASCII characters can appear in the message.
The format of all messages is:

[STX] [BYTE COUNT] [ADDRESS] [DATA....] [CHECKSUM] [ETX]

STX (start of transmission)

STX is the ASCII character 2. It is one byte in size and is used to represent the start of each
message.

BYTE COUNT
The BYTE COUNT is one byte in size and is the total number of bytes in the packet, i.e.
number of data bytes plus five (one each for STX, BYTE COUNT, ADDRESS, CHECKSUM
and ETX).

ADDRESS
The ADDRESS is one byte in size. This is the address of the equipment to which the packet
is being sent. Unique addresses can be in the range 001 to 255.

DATA
This is the actual data being sent to the equipment. In any one packet, the maximum
number of data bytes is 250. The DATA section includes the remote command and any
associated parameters.

CHECKSUM
The CHECKSUM is one byte in size and is included for error detection. It is the module
addition of all ADDRESS and DATA bytes.
Here is a typical example calculation:
[STX] [BYTE COUNT] [ADDRESS] [DATA....] [CHECKSUM] [ETX]
[2][8] [97 98 99] [43] [3]

The checksum is calculated as follows:

CHECKSUM = (5 + 97 + 98 + 99) mod 256 = 43

ETX (end of transmission)

ETX is the ASCII character 3. It is one byte in size and is used to represent the end of each
message.

LYNX 5100 Exciter/1051 Encoder – 600094 Page 84 of 128

8.6. COMMANDS, QUERIES AND RESPONSES

Definitions
A command is an instruction sent from the remote PC to the unit to change some
operating parameter or display mode.
A query is an instruction sent from the remote PC to the unit for the unit to report
one, or many, operating parameter.
A response is some data sent from the unit to the remote PC that gives the answer
to a query.

Response to valid commands

The response to a valid remote command is an echo back of the command (with
associated parameters). This indicates that the command has been accepted and the
unit will attempt to action the command.
Note: Receiving a response of this type does not mean that the command has been
actioned. Generally, the action will occur after the response has been sent.
This is to ensure that all responses are returned quickly. (Average response
time <300ms). If you want confirmation that a change has taken place, you
must send a query and then look at the response.

Example
Command to set the transmit gain to -20.0dB.
The command is „GT‟ and the valid range for the parameters is 000 to 400.
Command sent GT200
Response from unit GT200
Result – this response indicates that the unit will set the transmit gain to –20.0dB
Leading Zeros & Decimal Places
A command does not necessarily need to have the leading zeros set in the parameters
e.g. WVAUD767 will be accepted as valid in the same way that WVAUD0767 is.
The response, however, will be sent with the correct formatting with the leading zeros
set and similarly, with the correct number of decimal places sent.
Examples:
Command sent WCARRx
Response RCARRx
Command sent WRGAIxxx.x
Response RRGAIxxx.x
Data Send with a Read Command
If any parameters or extra characters are sent with a valid read command, they will be
ignored and the read command actioned as per this specification.

LYNX 5100 Exciter/1051 Encoder – 600094 Page 85 of 128

Response to invalid commands
A message can be invalid for four reasons: the unit is busy, the command was invalid
or the parameters were invalid.

Error 1 – unit busy

This will occur if the unit is displaying “Unit busy, please wait” (for example during a
software reset or preset recall)
Example
Command sent any
Response from unit Unit Busy

Error 2 – invalid command

This can occur for a number of reasons including:
 Command entered incorrectly (e.g. lower case instead of upper case)
 Parameters are invalid
 Parameter access invalid. (e.g. Attempt to send a new value to a read only
parameter)

Example
Command sent RQstr
Response from unit Invalid command
The command is invalid as it contains lower case letters (it should be RQSTR)

Error 3 – parameters out of range

If the parameter sent is outside of the valid range, the command will be rejected.

Error 4 – decimal places out of range

If a parameter is sent with too many decimal places, e.g. WRGAI010.1 will pass but
WRGAI10.10 will fail.

Up-converter Commands
The write command to the E2PROM will return immediately indicating that an attempt is being made
to write data to the address given.
The read command will wait for the data to be returned to the calling comms routine. Note: time
outs will be in operation should the command fail.
The format of the command data must follow this command exactly. Any values with less than the
required digits will be padded with leading zeros.

Program Up-converter Command WCEEPxxxxnnn

Comment 18F4525 PIC has 1024bytes of E2PROM. Current
design only uses 256bytes.

Remote Bulk Status query

A single command can be sent to query the complete status of the unit. As new features are
regularly added to this unit, the length of the response will grow. In order to help maintain
compatibility, all new settings will be added to the end of the bulk status response. Remote control
software should therefore be written so that longer responses will not cause the control software to
malfunction

Bulk status query Query RQSTR

8.7. COMMUNICATIONS PROBLEM SOLVING
There are a number of factors that could cause communications to fail. Following this list of
actions should help to remedy most problems.
1. Check that the communications parameters have been set correctly at both the PC
and the unit. It is essential that the command address matches the unit address and that the
baud rate is set the same at both ends. Also ensure that the unit has been set to the correct
communications protocol (RS232 or RS485) and that the correct com port has been set at
the PC.
2. Check cable connections – ensure that the cable is plugged into the correct
connectors at the PC and the unit.
3. Check cable wiring.
4. Check the command set – ensure that valid commands are being sent.
5. Verify the checksum calculation for the command – if it is incorrect, the command will
be ignored.
Diagnostics software is available on request. This will enable commands to be sent to verify
responses from the unit, to check cabling and also to monitor communications on the bus.

9. REMOTE CONTROL (WEB BROWSER)
9.1. INTRODUCTION
This equipment can be controlled by use of a PC connected at the rear panel Ethernet
connector.
Supported Web browsers required on a PC are Internet Explore 7 (IE7) or Firefox version
2.0.0.11 or above.
Direct connection to a Laptop or PC requires the use of a X-over Ethernet cable.
To enable the browser interface correctly the IP address needs to be set correctly on this
unit. Please see menu tree and associated description.
Having more than one DVE on a network requires each to have it‟s own unique MAC
address, and IP address; the MAC address is automatically defined as a unique value by use
of the product serial number.

10. REMOTE CONTROL (SNMP)
10.1. INTRODUCTION
This equipment can be controlled by use of a PC connected at the rear panel Ethernet
connector using SNMP.
The command set is defined by the MIB.
To keep this up to date reflecting any features added to the Lynx 5100 exciter a dedicated
URL allows download of the MIB text file.

http://192.168.0.90/common/DVE5100-MIB.txt (case sensitive) gives access to the MIB file.

If the unit is not on the default IP address of 192.168.0.90, then change the above to reflect
the address in use.

10.2. WEB PAGE OVERVIEW

Suggested browser to use to get MIB is FireFox as this gives the open and save options as
shown here -

WordPad should be used to format the text correctly.

APPENDIX A - CONDITIONAL ACCESS WORKED EXAMPLE

BISS-E uses four access codes for each transmission. Two of the codes are held in the
receiver and two in the transmitter. Each pair of numbers is used in a calculation to
create a key for the transmission – this key must be the same at both the transmitter and
receiver (i.e. the two numbers may be different but the calculation result must be the
same).

In each unit, one of the codes is factory set (BISS-E injected identifier) and one can be
set from the front panel (session key).

The video exciters use the unit serial number repeated twice to create BISS-E injected
identifier.
Examples
Unit serial number 1234567 Code: 12345671234567
Unit serial number 2018888 Code: 20188882018888

1. On the video exciter, navigate to the main operation menu. Set the following
parameters:

Frequency 950.0000MHz
Symbol rate 6.5000Msym
FEC ¾

2. On the video exciter, navigate to the Video menu. Select the correct video source for
the system.

3. On the Alteia, navigate to the Input menu (#4). Set the following parameters:

Frequency (menu 4/11) 950.0000MHz

Symbol rate (menu 5/11) 6.5000Msym
FEC (menu 5/11) ¾

4. On the video exciter, set the carrier and modulation (Tx key) to ON.

Step 1 – verify signal

The LOCK LED on the Alteia should now turn green and video should be seen on the
monitor.

Step 2 – set up CA on the video exciter

1. On the video exciter, navigate to the SCRAMBLING menu. Set the following
parameters:
Conditional access mode BISS-E.
Key 1000000000000000
2. On the video exciter set the conditional access (CA key) to ON

LYNX 5100 Exciter/1051 Encoder – 600094 Page 119 of 128

As the codes on the exciter and Alteia don‟t match at this stage, the Alteia will be unable
to decode the transmission. However it will still be locked on the signal so the LOCK LED
will be lit, the AUTHORIZED LED will flash and the ALARM LED will be lit. There will be
no picture on the monitor (or freeze frame depending on the Alteia setting).

Step 3 – set up CA on the Alteia

1. On the Alteia, navigate to the CA menu (#10). Set the following parameters:
BISS-E ACTIVE ID USER 1 xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Where xxxxxxxxxxxxxx is the BISS-E injected identifier of the video exciter.
For example if the serial number of the video exciter is 2018888, the following should be
entered:
BISS-E ACTIVE ID (menu 15/15) USER 1 20188882018888

2. On the Alteia, navigate to the CA menu (#10). Set the following parameters:
BISS MODE (menu 14/15) ENC 1000000000000000
The conditional access should now be set up correctly. The video signal should now
appear on the monitor.

APPENDIX C - FORMULAE

Useful Formula -

Data Rate / Modulation Factor x FEC x Code Rate = Symbol Rate

Where,

Symbol rate is in MS/s.

Data Rate is total bit rate (video, audio, data, mux overhead).
Modulation Factor - QPSK=2, 8PSK=3, 8QAM =3, 16QAM=4
FEC Eg. 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8
Code Rate Eg. 188/204

APPENDIX D- FIELD UPGRADE PROCEDURE

Software up-grade files can be sent to customer, by e-mail / disc for transfer onto a USB
memory device. Inserting the USB device into the rear and then powering the unit will cause
the unit to automatically down load from the memory device.
Notes: combined MP3 player / memory sticks are not compatible with the Lynx 5100 Exciter.
Ensure only one up-grade version is present on the USB stick.

1. Copy the up-grade file to USB memory stick.

2. Plug USB stick into either of the USB ports at the Lynx 5100 Exciter rear panel.
3. Power up Lynx 5100 Exciter

The following messages will appear (some may not if module already up to date)-

APPENDIX E- DOLBY E NOTES

Things to remember about Dolby –

1. A Dolby E frame is the same length, and must be correctly timed and synchronous
with, the video frame.

2. Correct timing is the responsibility of the preceding Dolby encoder and associated
embedder, prior to the Lynx 5100 Exciter. However the Lynx 5100 Exciter has the
ability to correct badly timed signals – described later.

3. Incorrectly timed Dolby will decode audibly, but may cause problems in post
production where the editing process cuts through a Dolby audio frame.

4. The correct timing, called “DE position” as measured using a DM100 Dolby analyser
(for example), is between TV lines 11 and 26 for NTSC and between line 7 and 31 for
PAL. Note that even for HD formats, line timing is referred to PAL/NTSC analogue
timing on a DM100 analyser.
Soon the line timing will be referred to in “uS” to avoid confusion. The DVE5100 uses
this notation, relative to the SMPTE RP168 reference point, so the correct values as
displayed are as shown in this table –

625 25 1080i 50 525 29.97 1080i 59.94
