Definition of Communication
Process
A Communication process is a series of
interrelated steps taken one after another with a
view to obtain a desired goal.

In other words, communication process states the

steps between sender and a receiver that result in
the transfer of a message through any medium
and understanding of meaning of the message and
response made inters of feedback.
9
Steps of Communication Process
According to David. K. Barlo, communication process
is the cyclical interaction of following elements :
a) Sender
b) Encoding
c) Message
d) Channel
e) Receiver
f) Decoding
g) Feedback and
h) Noise

Communication

Factors of Business Communication
process
Sender:
The person who initiates or begins
communication are called the sender or
communicator. Sender is responsible for an
intended message and encoding of the message.
The sender therefore creates the message out of
reaction developed in his mind.

12
Factors of Business Communication
process
Source:
For communication, there must be a source of
information. Although a sender is the immediate
source of information, the ultimate source is
stimuli which stimulates the sender to
communicate.

13
Factors of Business Communication
Purpose: process
Communication never happens without any
purpose i,e. communicator must have some
intentions in his mind for which he is interested
to communicate with one or more than one
person.
Encoding :
It is the process of putting thoughts and ideas of
the message into symbolic form. It is also termed
as 'mental wrapping' of the communication.
"Encoding is the process of putting the thoughts

process
Message: When there is any interest or intention
or idea in the mind of communicator, he makes
encoding of such which is known as message.
Thus a message is encoded information which is
communicated to the receiver or
destination. If there is no message, there will be
no communication.

15
Factors of Business Communication
process
Medium :
When the information or message has been
encoded, a sender then selects media. Media
means through which something is
communicated to others.
The media for oral communication are
conversation, telephone calls, conference,
meeting and others. Written communication uses
media like newspapers, letters, e-mail, report,
memo etc. 16
Factors of Business Communication
process
Decoding : Barlton & Martin Said — "Decoding
is the process of translating the symbols into the
interpreted message."
It is the process through which receiver
provides meaning to the message sent by the
sender i.e., it helps the receiver to interpret or
understand the sending message.

17
Factors of Business Communication
process
Receiver:
A receiver is the person or body who receives the
message sent by the sender. The receiver is the
destination that may be an individual or an
organization.
When the receiver receives the message, he
decodes the message to create a meaningful idea
from the message received.

18
Factors of Business Communication
process
Feedback : It is the response of receiver to
communicate to the original sender to create two-
way communication.

Feedback ensures proper and mutual

understanding between sender and receiver. It can
be written, spoken, signaled or given through
other means.

19
Factors of Business Communication
process
Noise :
It is the distortion during the communication
process which causes disturbance to the
message sent. As a result, receiver can get a
different message than what the sender has sent.

20
Types of Communication process

Horizontal Process :
When communication flows like a straight line
from sender to receiver, it is called horizontal
process of communication. It is also known as
one way process.

Types of Communication process
Circular Process:
When communication is completed by making a
circle, it is termed as circular process of
communication. This is also defined as on going
process.

Types of Communication process

Two-way Process:
Here sender sends a message and receiver makes
response by giving feedback. It is also called
reciprocal process.

Communication Model
The word model refers as representation of a
process, an event or a situation. It is not a
separate or independent method rather it is the
representation of an existing object.

The communication model is similarly a

symbolic representation of the communication
process. It does not show the details of a message
rather it presents only those elements which are
related to the object of sending a message.
24
Types of Communication Model
Aristotle's Model :
Such model has been developed by the Greek
philosopher Aristotle. Where three (3) elements
of communication have been identified clearly,
which are :
(a) Sender (b) Message & (c) Receivers

When sender sends any message to the receiver,

communication starts in the theme of such model.
Here the response of the receiver is not focused
and therefore it is known as one way 25
Types of Communication Model
New Comb's Communication Model :
New Comb has given a triangular communication
model. According to him, if any third party exists
between sender and receiver then he/she (third
party) would like to affect the communication.

26
Types of Communication Model
New Comb's Communication Model :
The main theme of this model is that sender and
receiver relies upon third party to communicate
instead of direct communication.
Here both the parties which are concerned should
establish trust upon the third party.

27
Types of Communication Model
Circular Model:
This model highlights two way communication.
Here the response of the receiver is given
importance. So, sender always anticipates
feedback from receiver. Therefore the receiver of
the message reacts in the context of the message
forwarded by the sender.
As a result, communication is completed.

28
Types of Communication Model
Shannon-Weaver Model:
This model shows the transmission of a message
from a source to the destination. The sender
initiates communication based on thoughts and
transmits information through selected media to
the receiver.
On the basis of the received message the receiver
transmits his emotion and feeling as a feedback.
During communication process there is a noise
which influences and affects the whole
communication. 29
30
Types of Communication Model
Modern Communication Model:
Due to the development in communication
system such model has been arrived adding some
more important matters.
In this model, sender prepares communication in
a planned way and sends message to the receiver
through an appropriate medium. When receiver
reacts, communication process is performed.
