Data Sufficiency

This document provides information about data sufficiency questions that are commonly asked in competitive exams. It explains that in data sufficiency questions, you are given a problem or question followed by two statements containing information or clues. You must determine whether the data provided in Statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question, Statement II alone is sufficient, or if both statements together are needed to answer the question. The document includes examples of data sufficiency questions with solutions to demonstrate how to approach these types of problems. It emphasizes that the goal is to determine what data is needed to arrive at a unique solution, not to actually solve the problem.

DATA SUFFICIENCY

Data Sufficiency is a very important part of almost all the competitive exams, so you cannot take the
risk of skipping it. Data Sufficiency uses direct and indirect knowledge of Mathematical concepts.
Data Sufficiency means you need to check whether the data given in the two statements is sufficient
to answer the question asked or not. You need to find a unique answer to the question asked. But
again we should remember we are asked not to solve the problem but to check which statement we
need to solve the problem

Tips to Solve Data Sufficiency Questions

1. These types of questions consists of problems on any reasoning topics like blood relation, coding-
decoding, direction test, ranking, seating arrangement, etc. followed by statements containing clues to
solve the question

given problem
3. We have to make sure whether the question can be solved with the help of information provided in
the 1ststatement or 2nd statement or together in the 1st and the 2nd statement
4. We are not supposed to assume anything beyond the information given in the question and the
following statements
Now we are going to understand the concept of data sufficiency with the help of some examples.

For the below examples using the data given in statements choose the option
A] if Statement (i) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (ii) alone is not sufficient.
B] if Statement (ii) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (i) alone is not sufficient.
C] if BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
D] if EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E] if Statements (i) and (ii) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

Example 1:

May

Solution:
correctly remembered by his mother to be between 12th and 14th May i.e.,13th May.
birth date as it can be any day between 10th and
15thmay. Therefore, statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question, while the data in statement
II alone are not sufficient to answer the question. Therefore, answer is A.

Example 2: How is A related to B?

Statement: I. B and C are children of D who is wife of A

Solution: From statement I alone we can deduce that B is the child of D who is the wife of A.

answer the question. Therefore, answer is C.

Example 3: What is the value of x?
A. x2 = 64 B. x3 = 512
Solution: Following the steps mentioned earlier, we see that statement A is not sufficient to answer
the question as from statement A; we get 2 values of x as - 8 and + 8. Statement B alone are sufficient
to answer the question as we get x = 8. Therefore, answer is B.

Example 4: What is the value of integer x^2- y^2?

Statements: i) x y = 0
ii) x + y = 3
In this problem in first statement x y = 0 which makes x^2- y^2 also zero. Hence only first statement
is sufficient to answer the above problem.
In second statement x + y = 3 but still value of x y is required and hence second statement alone is
not sufficient to solve the problem. Option A is correct.
