Attempt any six
Make Necessary Assumptions
1. Determine the maximum value of the load P as shown in figure assuming a
bearing type connection A325 N with thread possible in the shear plane. Use AISC
Load and Resistance Factor Design and assume class A surface condition with
standard holes . Use 7/8 in diameter bolts.

2. Determine the number of ¾ in diameter A 325 bolts required to carry a shear

force consisting 14 kips dead load and 56 kips live load and a tension force of 24 kips
dead loads and 96 kips live load . The connection is to be design such that the
resultant force acts through the centroid of the connection. Use Load and Resistance
Factor Design (a) Design as a bearing type A 325-X connections, and (b) design as a
slip-critical A325-SC connection having Class A surface condition and standard holes
3.
4.

5.

Use E70 electrodes. (Fy =50ksi, Fu =65 ksi )

(b) Slip critical connection. All strength requirements as checked in (a) for a bearing-
type connection apply to slip-critical connection. The interaction relation,
Fv'=17(1-T/Tb)
For ¾ in –diam bolts , Tb= 28 kips Multiplying Eq by Ab gives
T(0.4418)
Fv' Ab = 17Ab(1 − ) (f)
28Ab
Note that in eqn (f) Ab could be the total area ∑Ab of all participating bolts and T
could be ∑T. However, Tb is the initial tension in one bolt; thus, one area(0.4418)
appears in the numerator to give stress units. This will be correct whether the other
variables are ∑T/∑Ab for all bolts or T/Ab for one bolt. If the area Ab is considered
the total area ∑Ab of all participating bolts, then Eqn (f) may be written
∑V= 17∑Ab-0.27∑T (g)
Note that 0.27=17(0.4418)/28. Solving for the total area ∑Ab required gives

Required ∑Ab=
∑ V + 0.27∑ T (h)
17
which may be consider the equation for A325 bolts in slip-critical connections having
class-A surface condition and standard holes.
For A490 bolts, the denominator of Eq (h) becomes 21. Though the ¾ in diam
bolt was used in this development, it is noted that Ab/Tb is sufficiently constant to use
in Eq (h) as the design Eqn for all sizes of bolts.
Required ∑Ab=
∑ V + 0.27∑ T = 70 + 0.27(120) = 6 sq in .
17 17
The use of Eq (h) satisfies the shear requirement for slip resistance. The maximum
tension must also be checked. The design tensile strength φt Rnt per bolt is
φt Rnt = 0.75 (0.75 Fbu) Ab = 0.75 (0.75)× 120×Ab = 67.5 Ab kips
Using the factored load ∑Tu = 182 kips from part (a), the total bolt area required is
Required ∑ Ab = 182/67.5 = 2.7 sq in .< 6.0 in2
It is clear that slip resistance in shear controls. The number of bolts required is
6.0
Required n = = 13.6bolts
0.4418
Use 14-3/4"φ A 325 bolts for this slip-critical connection.

SOLUTION
(a) Compute the strength of the member. Referring to Table 3.5.1 the effective net
area Ae is
Ae=UAg=0.85Ag=0.85(3.61)=3.07sq-in
This is from LRFD-B3 category b following LRFD Eq.(B3-2)
The design strength of the angle member is the smaller of the following
φTn=0.90FyAg=0.90x 50x3.61=162 kips
φTn=0.75FuAe=0.75x65x3.07=150 kips (control)

(b) Select weld size and compute strength.

Min size fillet weld=3/16in (Table 5.11.1)
Min size fillet weld=3/8-1/16=5/16in (Fig.5.11.2)
Use 3/16-in fillet weld with E70 electrodes. The design strength φRnw is
φRnw=φte(0.60FEXX)=0.75x3/16x(0.707)42=4.18kips/in
which cannot exceed the shear rupture strength of the base metal
Max φRnw = φt (0.60 Fu) = 0.75 x 0.375 x 0.6 x 65 = 11.0 kips/in
The weld controls.

(c) Determine the lengths of weld to be used for the connection. Referring to fig.

F2 =φ RnwLw = 4.18 (6) = 25.1 kips

From the moment equilibrium about the back of the angle at F3,

150(1.94) − 25.1(3)
F1= = 36.0kips
6
Summation of forces gives
F3 = Tu – F1- F2 = 150 – 36.0 -25.1 = 88.9 kips
F1 36.0
Lw1 = = = 8.6in Use 9 in.
φR nw 4.18

F3 88.9
Lw3 = = = 21.2in Use 22 in.
φR nw 4.18

Use welds as shown in fig. through for better economy the largest welds that can
be placed in one pass are preferred and this would also reduce the connection
length.
