COMMUNICATION

& LEADERSHIP

PPT. #3
THE FIVE LEVELS OF LEADERSHIP (REVIEW OF LEVEL 1)

¡ Level 1 is the lowest level of leadership.

¡ Level 1 is usually given to people who have the ‘potential’ to be
a leader.
¡ With level 1, people may follow you only because they have to.
¡ Some people who make it to level one, may be bosses but never
become true influential leaders.
HOW DO WE ADVANCE TO LEVEL 2?
¡ Respect your team members like individuals who have value.

¡ Focus on building solid, long-lasting relationships by getting to know how to get along
with your team.

¡ Understand that level one is more of an opportunity to become a leader, but earned
yet.

¡ Stop relying on position to push people.

¡ Move out of your position and move toward your people.

HOW DO WE ADVANCE TO LEVEL 2?
¡ Understand that people are your greatest asset as a leader, not your position.

¡ Understand you don’t need to have all of the answers. It’s okay to say, “I don’t know.”

¡ Be inclusive.

¡ Find a leadership coach.

¡ Define your leadership. “Who am I? What are my values?”

¡ Focus on the vision.

LEVEL 2: PERMISSION – PEOPLE FOLLOW YOU BECAUSE THEY WANT TO.
¡ People are more likely to go along with leaders they get along with.

¡ Leaders who have moved up to permission have focussed more on we than me.

¡ Permissional leaders are sometimes looked at as ‘soft’ and can be taken advantage of.

¡ Permissional leadership requires openess. In other words, don’t be afraid to admit

admit your mistakes.
¡ Permissional leadership is not easy for people who are not naturally likeable.

¡ Permisional leadership is the foundation but not the ultimate goal. You have influence
now, but what next?
HOW TO GET TO
LEVEL 3?
PRODUCTION LEVEL:
PEOPLE FOLLOW
YOU FOR WHAT YOU
HAVE DONE FOR
THE
ORGANIZATION.
