SPEECH ACT ANALYSIS IN ALADDIN (2019) MOVIE SCRIPT

Henchman : “ Of course, you were not born to be sultan.”

2. CONTEXT
In this study, the writer wants to analyze and find the speech act in the
conversation between Aladdin, Jasmine, Genie, and Jaffar in the movie script Aladdin
2019. Aladdin is a musical fantasy film adapted from the 1992 Disney animated film
with the same title based on the Aladdin folklore in the epic collection of one
thousand and one nights. Aladdin movie was released on May 22, 2019 directed by
Guy Ritche and starring Will Smith as Genie, Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi
 Scott as Jasmine, Marwan Kenzari as Jaffar. This film tells the story of Aladdin who
falls in love with Princess Jasmine. Because of the difference in caste Aladdin looks
for ways to get closer to the princess until one day he finds a magic lamp that can
grant all wishes.

3. THEORY
Speech Act is an influential theory on the actual communicative function of
language and tries to answer to what extent impartial interaction is possible between
speakers (Baktir, 2012). This theory was first establised by Austen and Searle. There
are five kinds of chategory Searle speech act.

a. Declaration is kinds of speech act that change the world via their utterance or
word. The speaker has spesial institutional role that must be in spesific situation.
Example : “You’re win!”
The word “You’re win!” means that committe announces the winner of the
champion.

b. Representative is kinds of speech act that what the speaker believe to be case or
not. Usually statement or fact that the speaker representating the world with she or
he belive it. Example : “Zayn can’t drive a car”

c. Directive is kind of speech act that the speaker tell someone to do something that
can be positive or negative act.
Example : “Close the door!”

d. Expressive is kind of speech act that express or state the speaker feeling.
Example : “ Congratulation on your graduation!”

e. Commisive is kind of speech act that the speaker state promise to do some action
in the future. Example : “ I will call you later”
4. ANALYSIS

A. Declaration
The dialogue between Jaffar and Henchman in the basement. (Data 1)
Jaffar : “ and you think second is enough?”
Henchman : “ of course, you were not born to be sultan.”
From the conversation above conducted by Jaffar and Henchman, the
researcher analyzes that the conversation above is included in the speech act,
namely Declaration, because the speaker two (Henchman) stated that Jaffar was
not born to be a sultan and he believed it.

B. Representative
The dialogue between Jasmine and Aladdin in the palace.
Jasmine : “ You are unbelievable, you cannot just break into a palace and walk
around like your own the place.”
Aladdin : “ If you don’t have anything, you have to act like you own everything.”
In the conversation above conducted by Jasmine and Aladdin, the
researcher analyzes that the conversation above is included in the speech act,
namely representative, that Jasmine does not believe that Aladdin can enter the
palace and pass through the heavy guard by the guards and stand in front him.

C. Directive
The dialogue between Aladdin and Zulla in the Zulla’s shop.
Aladdin : “ Zulla, we both know it’s worth at least three bags.”
Zulla : “Take the bag of dates and get out!”
In the conversation above conducted by Aladdin and Zulla, the researcher
analyzed that the conversation above was included in the speech act, namely a
directive because Zulla told Aladdin to quickly take the bag of dates that she given
and told Aladdin to leave Zulla's shop immediately.

D. Expressive
The dialogue between Aladdin and Jasmine in the Aladdin’s house.
 Jasmine : “ Thank you for getting me out of there. Aladdin isn’t it?”
Aladdin : “ Uhm, your welocme...”
From the above conversation conducted by Aladdin and Jasmine, the
researcher concludes that the conversation is included in expressive speech acts
because in the conversation there is that Jasmine expresses gratitude to Aladdin
because he has saved Jasmine from the pursuit of criminals.

E. Commisive
The diaogue between Jasmine and Aladdin in Aladdin’s house
Jasmine : “ where are we, exactly? “
Aladdin : “ you will see.”
From the conversation above between Jasmine and Aladdin, the researcher
concludes that the conversation is included in the commissive speech act, because
Aladdin stated that he promised to show where he took Jasmine to.

5. CONCLUSION
The conclusion is that in this Aladdin film, the researcher finds and formulates that
there are speech acts categorized by seale, in the Aladdin film. The first is a
declaration which means a speech act that changes the world through his utterances or
words. Evidenced in the conversation between Jaffar and Henchman. The second is
representative which means the speech act that the speaker believes is the case or not.
Evidenced by the conversation between Jasmine and Aladdin. Next is the directive
which means a speech act that the speaker tells someone to do something that can be a
positive or negative action. Evidenced by the conversation between Zulla and
Aladdin. The fourth is expressive which means speech acts that express or express the
speaker's feelings. Evidenced by the conversation between Aladdin and Jasmine. And
the last is commissive, which means that the speaker's speech act states a promise to
take an action in the future, as evidenced by the conversation between Jasmine and
Aladdin.
