Assignment No. 2

This document outlines 8 problems for an assignment on digital communication techniques. It provides details on signal encoding, modulation, channel capacity, and error detection. Students are asked to draw diagrams, calculate data rates and signaling rates, determine bit patterns, and solve other related questions. They are also given exercises from chapters 3 and 4 in their textbook to complete.

CCN Assignment 02 10 Marks 24 Feb 09

Due Date: March 3, 2009

In case of any query: [email protected]

Problem 1

Given the following digital data stream:

100110110000000011101111

(a) Draw a diagram showing the data stream if unipolar signaling is being used to
transmit the data.
(b) Draw a diagram showing the data stream if bipolar AMI signaling is being
used to transmit the data.

Problem 2

(a) Draw the Non-Return to Zero - Invert (NRZ-I), Manchester, and Differential
Manchester encoding for the following bit pattern:
111010100001
Assume for the NRZ-I and Differential Manchester cases that the signal level
starts with a negative value.

(b) Determine the data sequence for the following waveform assuming:
(1) Manchester encoding
(2) Differential Manchester encoding

Problem 3
Given a channel that can pass signals with frequencies ranging between 5000 and 10000
Hz.

(a) What is the maximum theoretical signaling rate for this channel?

(b) What is the maximum theoretical data rate for this channel if the signal
transmitted over this channel has 32 levels?

(c) What is the maximum data rate for this channel if the channel has a signal to
noise ratio of 20 DB?

(d) What is the actual data rate for this channel if a 2400 Baud signal with four
states is sent?
Problem 4

Given the analog voice signal shown below. If the signal is sampled once per millisecond
time interval (starting at 0):

(a) What would be the bit stream sent if PCM encoding was being used to send
the data?

(b), what is the data rate of the resulting digital signal?

(c) What is the required S/N ratio (in DB) to transmit the signal over a 4 kHz
medium?

Problem 5
Given the following constellation for a 9600 BPS modem.

(a) How many bits are encoded on every signal element?

(b) What is the baud rate?

(c) How many:

(1) phases are present
(2) amplitudes are present?
Why is the maximum number of bits that can be encoded limited to the result
found in part (a)?

Problem 6

a. Given a 2400 BPS terminal that transmits ASCII characters using asynchronous
transmission (one start and 1 stop bit). What would the minimum time be to send
a 200 character message?
b. What would be the minimum time for a synchronous terminal (2 sync, 4 control,
and 2 CRC characters per block) to transmit the same message, if each block
contained a maximum of

i. 20
ii. 100
iii. 1000

data characters plus the sync/control/CRC characters?

Problem 7

Calculate the baud rate for the given bit rate and bit combination:
a. 2000bps, dibit
b. 6000bps, tribit
c. 6000bps, quadbit
d. 6000bps, bit

Problem 8

Draw the constellation diagram for the following:

a. ASK, amplitudes of 1 and 3
b. 2-PSK, amplitude of 1 at 00 and 1800.

Chapter 3 (BF) Exercises

16, 17, 18, 19, 27, 29, 37, 40
