Reflection

The document summarizes Atom Araullo's documentary "Dito sa Lungsod" about life in Tondo, Manila. It describes the poor living conditions faced by residents, including unstable housing and low-paying jobs that provide insufficient income to support basic needs. Residents migrate to the city seeking opportunities but instead face overpopulation, poverty, health risks from poor sanitation and pollution, and lack of access to education for children who must work to support their families. While life in rural areas also has challenges, the documentary suggests that government support for farmers could help address issues that force migration to cities and reduce suffering for those who end up in urban slums.

A Reflection to the Documentation ‘Sa Lungsod'

The ‘Dito sa Lungsod’ is a documentation by Atom Araullo that shows the life of the
people in Tondo. The first thing that I realized is the misconceptions of people about
Metro Manila. Wherein, they think that this is where they can find success causing them
to migrate in the big city which eventually leads in many problems like overpopulation
and so on. The following is the problems that I noticed and the condition of the people
on Tondo;

First is the housing wherein people is forced to live in slums where the houses is
almost uninhabitable due to how dangerous it is. Aside from it’s missing the basic things
like roofs and walls, it is also too fragile that it will almost crumble. In a good side, it was
mentioned that the National Housing Authority (NHA) offers them a more safe houses to
live in. However, they still hesitates to move in because of the lack of job opportunities.
That they are more willing to endure living in a house that can crumble anytime and put
them on danger as long as they have a source of income even if it’s too little.

Second is the problem in livelihood and employment, just like the case of Christy
Alcantara from Bicol who is currently residing in Tondo. It was hard for her to look fo a
job, her only source of income is through collecting plastic bottles where she cleans and
sell it, managing to get atleaset 150 pesos. In spite of that, it is still not enough for their
everyday needs. It is the same with Lalyn, a 19 year old from Butuan that is also
currently residing in Tondo and works for 12 hours as a sales lady with only a salary of
220 pesos. In my point of view, I find this ridiculously low especially that she also has to
spend on transportation and also for food. This is also something that I also realized
about Tondo, just like what Lalyn said ‘Magugutom ka dito kung hindi ka maghahanap
ng trabaho’, although of course we really need to work to buy our needs, but to think
that people there has to rely on collecting trashes and endures the low salary tells a lot
about the life in Tondo.

Third is the problems in health and education which I think is connected to the
livelihood and housing. Since due to poverty, childrens are forced to help their families
and work instead such us collecting garbages and peeling garlics. Moreover, exposure
to garbages can cause diseases and on the state of the houses these people lives in
does endangers their safety.

This made me question myself, what is the reason that caused these people to
migrate from rural to the urban city since most of them came from provinces and other
different parts of the Philippines especially that I was thought that living in province is
very peaceful, wherein if you’re hungry, you just have to go pick a fruit or get something
on the farm to eat. However, upon realization, maybe the life there is also not that easy.
Just like what Christy Alcantary said, sometimes they don’t eat if there are no harvest
and how it’s hard to live there that’s is why she choosed to migrate. Another one causes
is the misconception that success can be found in cities----in Manila. That migrating in
urban will be the gateway for them to succeed.
Despite that I don’t think their lives changed even after migrating. Perhaps for
some, it become better but mostly still suffers just like nanay Christy who migrated and
lived in Parola, Tondo for almost 33 years but only experienced suffering throughout
those years. In some sense, a solution that I can think is for the government to support
and help our farmers so that they won’t have to be forced to migrate in cities thinking
that it will give them more opportunities. In my opinion, the solution where we the
government will build more houses for them is something I disagree because after
giving them houses, what will happen, those squatter areas will going to be occupied
again by other people. It will be never ending.

In conclusion, I learned that life is not easy wherever you go. Maybe these can
also be the cases of those who migrates on other countries hoping that they can make
their life better and eventually become rich. This makes me learned that not because we
migrated from other country or places, doesn’t mean we will instantly become
successful.
