materials?
Narrate? describe? persuade? argue? or
expose information?

Various texts are made to have a purpose. This purpose is


identified to the text structure. Informational structure refers to
how the information within a written text is organized. It features
a detailed description of something to give the readers a mental
picture.

There are various informational or factual text types


or text structures that are useful to us. Each of them
has its own purpose. Learning them is very
important. They enhance our ability to read and
write.

Narrative – It tells a story.


Exa m p le :
The sun shone brightly, and the west breeze blew. The kite was flying this way
and that way tied to her string. Suddenly the string snapped. The kit was free.
She soared high in the air until she could see far, far away.

Compare and Contrast – Draw out similarities and differences of the two
subjects.
Exa m p le :
Although I raised Marcee and Obbie from puppies, they have complete diverse
personalities. Obbie is a six year old, male, toy Pomeranian whereas Marcee is
a one year old, female, Boston terrier. Obbie is small and soft, unlike Marcess
who has bristly hair and is much bigger.

Cause and Effect – Discuss reasons why something occurs.
Exa m p le :
Since it was raining, Alice bought her umbrella to school.
Because they earned extra money, the children bought an ice crea, treat.
The baby spilled milk on the floor so Mom got the mop.

Description – Describe a characteristic of an object or a specific place.


Exa m p le :
My father is old enough, around 73 years old. He weighs 67 kilos and 168 cms.
He has short black hair and black eyes. He doesn’t have any moustache and
beard, but he has mole on his cheeks. His skin is dark brown. My father doesn’t
work anymore. He retires as a doctor and now runs a home business at home.

Persuasion – To express and justify opinion.


Exa m p le :
When it comes to pets, dogs are most certainly the best choice. They are loyal,
affectionate and active companion. No other choice of pet can compete with a
dog.

Definition – To define a term.


Exa m p le :
School is an institution for educating children.

Exposition – Explain a particular subject to the reader.
Exa m p le :
Why is the sky blue?
Even though you can’t see it, the sun rays have every color in them. The
atmosphere of the Earth scatters blue light more than any color. This is why the
sky looks blue during the day.

Sequence – To show chronological order.


Exa m p le :
First, you mix together all the ingredients. Next, you put the pie in the oven to
bake. Last, you take the pie out of the oven and eat it.

Problem and Solution – Present a particular event that needs to be resolved.


Exa m p le :
Ted and Sam both wanted to drive the car. They started yelling at each other.
Their mom came and told them to stop fighting. She told Ted he could drive
the car today, and Sam would have a turn tomorrow.
