1. FONCTION - APPLICATION
The maximum and/or minimum DC voltage relays (TUG) are used for precision
measurements of low value DC voltages. These are particularly suite to:
− Monitoring the excitation current of rotation machines (min and max, by
measuring the voltage at the terminals of a shunt, . 0.1 V or 0.3 V range).
− All DC voltage monitoring purposes (tachometer dynamo, battery, etc., 1 to
300 V range).
2. DESCRIPTION - DIMENSIONS
The TUG plug-in mounted in a TROPIC housing with a 5 module width (101.1 mm).
Electrical connections consist of 6.35 mm clips and screw terminals.
These units come in the following versions:
1. Minimum DC voltage relay
TUG - one minimum threshold one instantaneous output TUG1010
one time-lag output TUG1011
TUG - two minimum thresholds one instantaneous output per threshold TUG2010
one time-lag output per threshold TUG2012
2. Maximum DC voltage relay
TUG - one maximum threshold one instantaneous output TUG0110
one time-lag output TUG0111
TUG - two maximum thresholds one instantaneous output per threshold TUG0210
one time-lag output per threshold TUG0212
3. Min/max DC voltage relays
TUG - one minimum threshold one instantaneous output per threshold TUG1110
one maximum threshold one time-lag output per threshold TUG1111

3. PRINCIPLE
The version described below is the TUG1111 relay (one max DC threshold and one
min DC threshold, both with time-lag outputs). Operation of the other version can be
easily deduced from the operation of this relay.
The input voltage is attenuated by a factor which varies according to the voltage
range. This voltage is applied to a filter (cut-out frequency of 1 Hz, attenuation of 12
dB/octave). The filter output level is applied to two comparators (one minimum, one
maximum) which generate an output once the signal value reaches a reference value.
These thresholds can be configured through adjustment devices on the front panel.
The comparators control two time-lags which can be set through adjustment devices
on the front panel.
The time lag circuits control, at the end of the set time lag, two output relays and two
memory type LEDs.
A pushbutton is used to reset the memories associated to the LEDs.
A test pushbutton (option) is used to simulate a fault to activate the detectors, time lag
circuits and indicator lights. During the test, the output relays are locked.
NOTES : - With a two threshold relay, each threshold has its own detector
and its own time lag. The same input level is applied to the two
thresholds.
- For a relay with time lag outputs, there is no instantaneous
output (see diagrams on following pages).
- For a DC power supply the isolation between the auxiliary
power supply and the measurement is ensured through a
DC/DC converter.

4. CHARACTERISTICS
4.1 Input values
• Nominal input level Un: 0.1 V - 0.3 V - 1 V - 3 V - 10 V - 30 V - 100 V - 300 V
• Input resistance:
• Measurement voltage:
− Minimum threshold: 6 to 54% Un in steps of 2%
or 30 to 78% Un in steps of 2%
− Maximum threshold: 40 to 88% Un in steps of 2%
or 70 to 118% Un in steps of 2%
or 100 to 148% Un in steps of 2%
• Threshold precision: 5%
• Return percentage:
− 97% ± 2 % for maximum voltage relays
− 103% ± 2% for minimum voltage relays
• For all values less than 20% Un, add an error of 1% absolute.
• Permissible continuous overload:
− for 300 V range: 1.8 Un
− for other ranges: 2 Un or 50 V (apply highest value).
4.2 Output
• By relay excitation.
• One (or two) instantaneous output(s) or one (or two) time lag output(s) (according
to version, see page 3).
• Each output has a switch and a make contact.

5. ACCEPTANCE TESTS
This specification applies to all the TUG relays.
On reception of the relays at the site and prior to commissioning, following checks
should be performed. Should a relay prove defective, contact the Product Support
Department at ALSTOM MRE.
5.1 Installation
a) Diagram (example of TUG1111 with Un = 0.1 Vdc and Uaux = 125 Vdc)
Recommended settings for resistors R1 and R2:
− R2 < 10 times input impedance of the TUG relay
− R1 > 100 times R2
i.e. R1 set for 125 kΩ and R2 for 100 Ω.

5.3 Tests
a) Check of operating threshold
Case of maximum voltage threshold U > for relays TUG0110, TUG0111, TUG0210,
TUG0212, TUG1110, TUG1111.
− Using the decade box for resistor R2, pre-set a voltage below the configured
U> threshold.
NOTE : For relays TUG1110 and TUG1111, pre-set the voltage between
the two thresholds, U < and U>.
For relays TUG0111, TUG0212 and TUG1111, set a minimum
time lag.
− Gradually increase the resistance R2 to obtain a transition of the contacts on
the output relay.
− Check that the contact changes state for the set threshold value.
− When the threshold is reached, check the continuity and discontinuity of the
contacts as indicated in the table below.
6. COMMISSIONING TESTS
6.1 The reception tests procedure in section 5 has demonstrated that the
protection operates correctly.
6.2 Protection unplugged
• Check the value and polarity of the panel auxiliary supply voltage.
• Check interconnection (polarities) between the dc voltage generator and the
protection.
• On the front panel, configure the values selected for voltage thresholds and time-
lags.
6.3 Protection plugged-in on panel, ready to operate
6.4 Protection tests
The tests in chapter 5 are repeated, but this time, acting on the level of the dc voltage
and/on de calibration of the protection (voltage threshold set to minimum level).

7. REPAIRS
The following tests should be performed if a malfunction is detected in the protection.
7.1 Auxiliary power supply voltage
• Check the value of the power supply voltage at the terminals of the TUG relay,
which should be between 0.8 and 1.1 Ua.
• Check the polarity if dc power supply is used (TUG relay protected against polarity
inversion).
• Perform required corrective actions.
7.2 Connection
• Check that the connection matches the connection diagram.
• Perform required corrections.
7.3 Continuity of circuits
• Check continuity, up to the relay terminals, of logic information applied to and
output by the contacts.
• Check for any incorrectly crimped terminal lugs or incorrectly tightened screws.
• Perform required corrections.
7.4 Test
• Press the TEST push button; protection should still be plugged in with no fault
present on the protective network.
• Check that the LEDs come on at the end of the protection time.
7.5 Resetting indicator lights
• Press the reset pushbutton and check that the indicator lights go off provided the
protection has not detected any fault on the protected network.
7.6 Acceptance test – pre-commissioning tests
• Unplug the active part.
• Perform the tests detailed in the ACCEPTANCE TESTS and COMMISSIONING
TESTS sections.
Should one of the points in section 7-1, 7-2 and 7-3 not be observed following
success full completion of the checks detailed in sections 7-4, 7-5 or 7-6 contact the
ALSTOM MRE Product Support Department at Villeurbanne for return of the faulty
protection module if necessary.
