Unit 14: Installing and Maintaining Computer Hardware

Due:

Submitted by: Joseph Baker

Lecturer: George Wakeman
Intro

I have been asked by north Wiltshire environmental to upgrade their hardware to maintain and
modernize the systems. By upgrading certain aspects of the system, for example the hardrive I
can prevent loss of data.

The purpose of installing and maintaining hardware

 Compatibility: a change in CD drive to CDs/DVD burners to fulfill the brief.

 Change in system functionality: and a webcam to make it more compatible for
users( video conferences) and it also follows the brief.
 Upgrade: The reason why we upgrade is because it’s a cost-effective way because maintaining
the system to keep it up to date rather than replacing it with a new system. Upgrading the hard
drive to an SSD will help with the boot time.
 Improve productivity: with the webcam that would improve it to have meetings online rather
than in person it saves time and improves productivity. Overheating issues can be easily
rectified by improving the CPU fan to make it more reliable.

User requirement description

The requirements needed are to help the CEO fault find the optical drive issue that cannot
read disks for needs.

To help finding the overheating problems and random shutting down issues. I could open the
case and clear dust from the system so you could check to see if the CPU fan is working
correctly to its full capacity.

To fulfill the brief to make it run a lot faster which is what the chief executive officer asks for
which then to improve the boot uptime

Replace the DVD drive with a DVD burner.

This then again fulfills the brief of the chief executive officer to be able burn dvds.

1
By purchasing the webcam this makes it possible to have video conferencing to make it easier
full staff to communicate with other staff and customers

I will follow the timeframe of three weeks and back up any system data in and follow a budget
of £150.

Installation and maintenance plan

Installation activities list  DVD Burner - due to the brief DVD/

rewriter optical drive is required
 Solid state drive to improve the
speed of boot up
 Install webcam for meetings online
Maintenance activities list  Dust the computer to solve
overheating problems
 Fault finding DVD ROM drive -
working out why it doesn’t function
properly, also upgrading from DVD-
to-DVD burner-RW
Required hardware resources and  Tools, screwdriver, screws, small
justification (i.e., internal and external screws for screwing in SSD.
hardware/devices)  Webcam to fulfill brief
 SSD to upgrade from hard drive
Required software resources and  Windows
justification (i.e., operating system,  USB Pen with windows installed
application software, security/antivirus  Software for webcam – driver

and software burn to DVD to fulfil

Possible alternative solutions and reasons for rejection

Alternative Solution 1
Alternative hardware name Processer upgrade from core 2 duo to
quadcore
Hardware features CPU to improve speed
Benefits over selected hardware To improve the performance and user ability
of the system via multi-tasking.
Reasons for rejection CPU very difficult to track down no brand-
new ones available, second hand ones not
reliable.
Alternative Solution 2
Alternative hardware name RAM
Hardware features To improve the speed the computer
Benefits over selected hardware Its quick and easy to replace the ram
Reasons for rejection ddr2 ram is very difficult to track down no
brand-new ones available, secondhand ones

Justification of final decisions

 Rationale behind chosen hardware and software

I have provided screen shots with prices with products to show that it is £150 or under

6
 How final decisions meet stated purpose and client’s requirements

The final decision was an SSD because it is more reliable and faster (to improve boot up time.)
A cheaper choice to follow the £150 budget. Also, the DVD burner was chosen as it was the
best specification for the price, I chose this webcam because it was the best Quilty and price to
choose from.

 Possible constraints and impact on the plan

My final decision is SSD possible constraints could be the loss of data when changing from
one hardrive to another might get lost in the post which would affect the timeframe which is
another issue also SSD may be damage because cause through the systems of the post office
it may have been dropped from a height

The deliveries may be delayed, parts me be out of stock, the impact maybe that they may have
to go somewhere else due to it not being in stock or the delivery driver may take it to the wrong
place or somewhere else.

Issue parts may arrive damaged therefore I would have to order again which would cause a
time delay in the timeframe of 3 weeks.
