Eat a variety of foods during the day

each day as much as possible.
Make starchy vegetables and or peas and beans a part
of your diet.
As often as possible, choose foods with less sugar and
or less salt.
Choose a variety of fruits and vegetables every day.
Drink plenty of water every day.
If you have to drink alcohol, do so in moderation
Choose foods for their nutritional value not for the
name brand or cost.
Breast milk is the best choice for infants to start a
healthy life.
Fish and chicken are the healthiest meats
Choose vegetable oils; cooking fat is harmful to your
health.
A good day starts with breakfast; eat some food in the

Find out what is the healthy weight for your height;
stay in shape.

Income – Most times people with low levels of income tend to buy cheaper food items which
may not always be beneficial to their health. This causes a shift in their eating patterns.
Advertisement – Certain advertisements like billboards and videos may persuade people to buy
fast food/junk food which causes a change in their eating patterns.
Cultural – People from different cultural backgrounds eat different foods. The areas in which
families live and where their ancestors originated can have a heavy influence on what a person
eats on a daily basis
Religious – Certain religions and religious denominations are not permitted to eat certain foods
based on their beliefs. For e.g., the Seventh day Adventists do not eat pork because they believe
that it’s ‘unclean’
Medical – Due to certain medical conditions some people have to be put on strict diets. For e.g.,
People who suffer from obesity are encouraged to eat more fruits and vegetables.

Age – Unlike many young people, most older adults tend to consume less energy-dense
sweets and fast foods, and consume more energy-dilute grains, vegetables and fruits
Gender - Men generally need more calories, they also require higher total intake of each
of the macronutrients while women require fewer calories than men.
