Math Revision - Unit 10

This math revision document covers several topics: - Mean, median, mode, and range of listed data - Drawing and interpreting charts, graphs, and pie charts - Filling in two-way tables - Stem-and-leaf diagrams - Scatter graphs - Calculating mean, median, and mode from frequency and grouped frequency tables It provides examples and explanations of how to calculate the mean, median, mode, and range of data sets. It also demonstrates how to draw and interpret various charts and tables, including pie charts, two-way tables, and stem-and-leaf diagrams. Frequency and grouped frequency tables are explained as well as how to calculate statistics from those tables.

➔Comparing Data from Graphs
Mean: A mean in math is the average of a data set, found by adding all
numbers together and then dividing the sum of the numbers by the number of
numbers.
EXAMPLE:
Find the mean of the length of the ant

coby 2

darla 6

tessa 11

robin 8

jay 3

2 + 6 + 11 + 8 + 3 =
30 / 5
mean = 6

Median: The middlemost value after arranging the other values in the data
set in ascending order.
EXAMPLE:
The scores on a science test

Charmaine 2

Toka 4

Delarne 8

Sunny 12

Julia 16

Chernie 1

(Order them smallest to largest)

1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 16
Now do cancellation
-1-,-2-, 4 , 8 , -12-, -16-
4 + 8 = 12
12 / 2
Median = 6

Mode:
The mode is the value that appears most often in a set of data values
EXAMPLE:
Amount of food eaten

welly moo derlia kya monta jimmy fluff violet

4 13 7 11 4 7 8 4

4 appears the most, therefore, it is the modal value

Range: The Range is the difference between the lowest and highest values
EXAMPLE:
The age of people at a gym

17 14 27 21 38 49

Highest -> 49
Lowest -> 17
49 - 17 = 32
Range = 32
Drawing and Reading Basic Charts and Graphs

colour tally frequency

red ||| a

blue ||||||| b

green |||| c

yellow | d

purple || e

What is the frequency for :

a= 3, as there are 3 tallies
b= 7, as there are 7 tallies
c= 4, as there are 4 tallies
d= 1, as there is 1 tally
e= 2, as there are 2 tallies

b) What is wrong with blue?

Blue should have a cross signifying five and then 2 extra tally marks
Monday

Tuesday

Wednesday

Thursday

Friday

Full smiley = 10 students Smiley cut = half

How many students were absent on:

a) Friday?
b) Wednesday?
c) Thursday
d) How many more students were absent on tuesday than wednesday?

To work a) , b) and c) count how many smileys there would be if the half was a whole,
then subtract it by how many half there are, ( 1 half meanes ‘-5 as that is half of 10)

Using that, try to work out D!!

Drawing Pie Charts:

Some people were asked what they had for breakfast. The data is recorded below:
Breakfast Frequency (number of people)

cereal 18

toast 8

egg 4

nothing 15

Draw the PIE CHART FOR THIS, and include the angles:

To draw the PIE CHART:

a) Add up the numbers - 18 + 8 + 4 + 15 = 45

b) ALWAYS, THE WHOLE ANGLE IN A PIE CHART IS 360
c) 360 / 45 = 8
d) Now is it very easy times the numbers by eight to get the angle
ANGLE FOR CEREAL: 18*8 = 44
ANGLE FOR TOAST = 8*8 = 64
ANGLE FOR EGG = 4*8 = 32
ANGLE FOR NOTHING = 15*8 = 120
(remember to ALWAYS use a protractor for the angles)

INTERPRETING PIE CHARTS:

Marilyn has £120 to spend each week. The pie chart shows what she spends her
money on. How much does she spend on each?

144
a) Let’s say we want to figure out RENT: first, we do /360
2
b) Now we simplify it to /5
2
c) Now we do /5 of her money all together, in this case £120
d) = (120/5) * 2
e) = 24 * 2
f) = £48, she spent 48 pounds (you can also use this when working out amounts
of people, very useful!)
Filling in Two-Way Tables

Fill in the table

Cinema Swimming Cycling Total

Boys 18 17 47

Girls 15 8

Total 80

a) 15 +17 = 32
b) 47 - 32 = 15
c) Hence boys cycling is 15
d) 18 + 15 = 33
e) Hence cinema total is 33
f) 15 + 8 = 23
g) Hence cycling total is 23
h) 80 - 47 = 33
i) Hence Girls total is 33
j) 33 - 15 - 8 = 10
k) Hence Girls swimming is 10
l) 17 + 10 = 17
m) Hence swimming total is 27

Cinema Swimming Cycling Total

Boys 18 17 15 47

Girls 15 10 8 33

Total 33 27 23 80
STEM - AND - LEAF DIAGRAMS:

a) What is the median score?

Order you stem-and-leaf then you can either cross
b) Find the range of the scores
Subract biggest number, (66) by the smallest number (1)
c) Find the mean
Count total numbers added together then / by the amount of numbers

Two-Way Tables
a) How many black shapes?
b) How many red squares?
c) What is the total shapes altogether?

Scatter graphs:

Sentence starters:
This shows a positive correlation because…
This shows a negative correlation because…
This shows no correlation because…

Frequency Tables:
21 + 12 + 56 + 63 +10
= 162
2+3+7+7+1
= 20
Mean = 162/20 = 8.1

—--------------------------------------------------------------------

20 people altogether

Use formula n+1 / 2

20+1 = 21/2
= 10.5
As 10.5 is in the 8 part, the median is 8

Mode is easy just find which has the most amount 🙂
