Relative Motion

The document provides information about relative motion including: 1) It defines relative motion as motion observed from a frame of reference or the motion of one body with respect to another that is regarded as fixed. 2) It explains that motion is always described within a frame of reference and that saying an object is at rest means it is not moving within the frame of reference it shares with that object. 3) It gives examples of frames of reference including looking out the window of a moving train and seeing another train appear to move backwards, as well as seeing a ball roll down a street with the street and earth serving as frames of reference.

RELATIVE MOTION:
THE ULTIMATE
CRASH COURSE

by ashley garay
THE OBJECTIVE 1
LEARNING The entirety of the class will be
able to define relative motion.
OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVE 2
Most of the class will be able to
understand the concept of
relative motion.

OBJECTIVE 3
Some of the class will be able to
solve the problems according to the
formula of relative motion.

WHAT IS RELATIVE MOTION?

the definition...
-It is motion as observed from or
referred to some material system
constituting a frame of reference.

-It is the motion of one body with

respect to another regarded as
fixed.

WHY IS MOTION
ALWAYS RELATIVE?
Motion is always within a certain frame of reference. Saying that a
body is at rest, which means that it is not in motion, merely means
that it is being described with respect to a frame of reference
that is moving together with the body.

WHAT IS MOTION?
In Physics, motion is change with time of the position or orientation of a body.
PLAYER 1 MOTION: AN EXAMPLE

If you look outside the window of a

moving train, you will observe that
another train lying stationary or lying still,
appears to be moving in a backward
Back to Agenda Page direction.

WHAT IS
A FRAME?
Frame of reference consists of an
abstract coordinate system and the set of
physical reference points that uniquely fix
the coordinate system and standardize
measurements within that frame.
PLAYER 1 FRAME: AN EXAMPLE

Another example is when you see a ball roll down a

street, you can tell the ball is moving because the
frame of reference is the streets, whatever may be on
the side of the roads, or the Earth. All of these are
frames of reference. All measurements of motion will
Back to Agenda Page be compared to a frame of reference.
