The Indian Airforce
History
The Indian Airforce was established as an auxiliary air force
of the Royal Air Force of Britain on 8th October,1932.

On 1 April 1933, the first squadron of the Indian Air Force


(IAF) ‘No. 1 Squadron’ was commissioned with four
Westland Wapiti biplanes and five pilots.
In March 1945, acknowledging the IAF’s achievements
and contributions in the Second World War, the
service was honoured by the bestowal of the title
‘Royal’ on its title by British monarch King George VI.

In 1950, the Royal Indian Air Force became the Indian


Air Force.
On 1 April 1954, Air Marshal Subroto Mukherji
took over as the first Indian Chief of Air Staff .
Motto of the Indian Airforce
Touch the sky with Glory नभः स्पृशं दीप्तम्

The Motto has been taken from


eleventh chapter of the Gita, the
Discourse given by Lord Krishna to
Arjuna on the battlefield of
Kurukshetra during the Great War
of Mahabharata.
Role of the Indian Air Force
It's Primary Mission is to secure Indian Airspace and to
conduct aerial warfare during armed conflict.
The Indian Air Force not only safeguards Indian
territory and national interests from all threats but also
provides support during natural calamities in the
country.

the Indian Armed Forces.

Defence Staff of India.
