Chapter 1 Software Installation
1.1 Installation of XRF
Double click XRF 2.0.exe to start the installation.

Select your preferred language and then click OK to open the following screen.

Click OK to accept the change and return to the previous window. Then click Next to continue.

Click Install. The following window will appear when the process ends.

1.2 Uninstallation
To un-install the software, click skyray-instrument > XRF 2.0 > Uninstall XRF 2.0 from Start
menu, as shown below.

Chapter 2 Software Introduction
2.1 Main Interface
Double click on the icon to start the software. Enter your username and password to login
as below. Then the main interface will appear.

2.2.1 Settings
The options in the Settings menu are Device, Shape and Suppliers.

2.2.1.1 Device
This menu allows you to make settings on instrument model, instrument information, collimator,
filter, sample tray, target material and others according to your measurement requirements.
1) Model: allows you to add, delete or modify instrument models according to your
measurement instrument. Default is an instrument model by default.
New - adds a new device by typing in its name and then clicking this button.

Delete - removes a device by selecting its name and then clicking this button.
Modify - to modify a model name, double-click on it and then make changes in the pop-up
dialog box.
2) Device: presents instrument information.
Communication type - widely used communication methods are provided, including USB,
FPGA, BlueTooth and Parallel.
Other - allows you to specify the dynamic library, USB type, whether to encrypt and if it is
DP5.
Configuration - configures the relative ratio and upper limits of tube voltage/current, the
total number of spectrum channels, as well as cover and electric lock status.

2.2.1.2 Shape
This menu allows you to build a shape library for the samples to be measured.
New - to add a new shape, input a name for it and then click New. The new shape information
will be added to the list.
Delete - highlight a record and then click this button to remove a shape record.
Shape list - displays the current shape records and their creation date.

2.2.1.3 Suppliers
This window allows you to record suppliers’ information.
New - to add a new record of supplier, input the name in the box and then click New. The new
supplier information will be added to the list.
Delete - highlight a record and then click this button to remove a supplier record.
Supplier list - displays the current records of suppliers and the creation date.

The Condition/Conditions menu allows you to set up initialization and measurement conditions.

1) Conditions list: lists conditions for matching mode and smart mode by default. Click
Add to add new conditions to the list.
2) Add/Delete: adds or deletes a condition.
3) Initialization condition
Voltage - specifies the tube voltage for initialization. The default value is 40.
Current - specifies the tube current for initialization. The default value is 100.
Init. Element - the element of the known sample to be used in initialization. The default
element is Ag.
Coarse code - defines the coarse code for initialization. Default: 60.
Fine code - defines the fine code for initialization. Default: 120. For DP5 detector, it
should be more than 6000.
Init. Channel - the energy channel of the sample to be used in initialization. The default
value is 1105, corresponding to Ag.
Filter - the number of the filter to be used in initialization. Default: 1.
Collimator - the number of the collimator selected for initialization. Default: 1.
Allowed error – defines the permissible energy scale deviation of peak channel for
initialization.

4) Measurement condition
Name - the system ID corresponding to the measurement condition.
Time - the continuous measurement duration under this condition.
Voltage - the high voltage applied to X-ray tube during measurement.
Current - the current applied to X-ray tube during measurement.
Filter - the filter number selected for measurement.
Collimator - the collimator hole used in measurement.
Pump by time - whether to pump by time.
Pumping Time - the pumping time before measurement.
Pump by pressure - whether to pump by pressure.
Pressure - vacuum to be met for measurement.
Adj. CPS - whether to adjust count rate during measurement.
Min. CPS – defines the minimum count rate for adjustment.
Max. CPS - defines the maximum count rate for adjustment.
Starting ch. - the minimum channel number that spectrum appears.
End ch. - the maximum channel number that spectrum appears.
Peak drift – selects whether to judge peak drift.
Starting time - the time when the peak drift judgment starts.
Peak drift (L) - the minimum channel number for peak drift judgment
Peak drift (R) - the maximum channel number for peak drift judgment
Peak drift sign - the expected peak channel used as the criterion for peak drift judgment.
Acceptance - the acceptable peak drift range. If the channel offset falls into this range, a
message of initialization will be given.
2.2.3 Curves
The Curves menu is shown as below.

2.2.3.1 Curves
This menu enables you to open a curve already built, build a new curve and export/import curves.

Curve list - displays the name, type and condition of the curves already exist. Selecting the
checkbox Default makes the curve as the default working curve.

2.2.3.3 Interference Element
This window contains two lists.
1) List of elements to be measured - lists all elements of interest, each of which can be main
element (primary element).
2) List of interference elements - all elements may affect the main element except itself. If the
interference exists, select the check box and input the interference coefficient in the light of
experience.

2) Data
Name - the name of the standard sample.
Intensity - the intensity is calculated out by system on the bases of the left/right peak
boundaries and intensity calculation method.
Concentration - input the actual element concentration manually.
Activate – selects whether to use concentration and intensity of this element to build the
curve.
Activate All-selects all to use concentration and intensity of this element to build the curve.
Join Matching - whether to match using the data in the list.
New/Delete - adds or removes a piece of spectral data.
2.2.3.5 Customize
Sometimes, compound concentrations need to be determined. In this case, you can use this
function to customize compound calculation methods. Take FeCl3 for example, you can
customize its expression as below.

1) Escape peak - eliminates the target material impact on the measured elements by removing
escape peaks produced by excited target material atoms.
Process – whether to remove escape peaks.
Angle - the angle of the target. Default: 45.
Factor – spectrum zoom factor. Default: 1.
2) Sum peak – eliminates the impact of sum peaks.
Process – whether to remove sum peaks.
Pulse resolution - Default: 2.
Factor – spectrum zoom factor. Default: 1.
3) Background - eliminates the impact of background.
×Bkg - the number of times to perform this operation.

Factor - spectrum zoom factor. Default: 1.
Range - the spectral range to perform background removal 4.
Bkg Point (separated with "," e.g. 1,2,3) – removes background by the peak channel.

After click “Intensity offset correction”,it will prompt “Correct?”, and start to initialize.
1. Control-sample Correction: include two types of calculation results,i.e. initial parameter and correct
parameter, as shown in Fig. 2.20.

a. Initial parameter:Enter the sample name in the interface and confirm the peak boundary of each
element, then click OK, as shown in Fig. 2.21. Then put into the standard sample ,click OK to start
scanning, or click Open spectrum to directly open the standard spectra have been saved.

Reset: Clear the input.
Original intensity: Click Original intensity, open the spectra need to be corrected to generate the
present intensity.
Correct intensity: Click Correct intenstity, open the spectra need to be corrected to initial to generate
the corrected intensity.
b. Correct parameter: put into the sample and click OK to start scanning, or click Open spectrum to
directly open the standard spectra have been saved.
2. Pure elements correction: put the pure standard samples and start scanning according to the prompted, or
open the saved spectra of pure elements, as shown in Fig. 2.22.

Skip: click it to skip to Next( pure element scanning) if the desired standard is not available.
Open spectrum: the scanned pure elements spectra are all saved in the database, when prompt Put
into standard**, if already has been scanned, click it to open the spectra of pure element ,in order to correct the
intensity after the measurement.
Confirm: click it to start the scanning test after putting into the pure element sample,after the test is
finished, the dialog indicating start the scanning test for the next sample pops-up automaticlly.
Exit: interrupt the correction process. If need to continue the correction, restart from the first step.

2.2.4 Spectra
The Spectra menu is shown as below.

2.2.4.1 Load Spectra
This option enables you to open the spectra already exist.

Query - allows you to query spectra by name or date and gives the query result in list sorted by
name or time.
Information - presents the spectral information, including sample name, measurement date,
supplier, shape, weight and color.
Spectra - click a spectral name from the left list and the corresponding spectral graphics will be
presented on the right area.
Show/hide - click the button ">>" or "<<" to hide or zoom in an area.
Export(Query)- select some spectra and click the button to export those spectrum record.
Import/Export - click Import to add a new spectrum record to the spectra list. Click Export to
export a spectrum record to some other place.
Select/Delete - selects or removes a spectrum record.

2.2.5.5 Parameters
This option configures parameters for qualitative analysis.

2.2.6.2 Save
This option saves measurement reports to the pre-set save directory.
2.2.6.3 Print
This option prints measurement reports.
This menu allows you to add or delete a user, as well as change the password and rights.
User list - allows you to view and modify the user names, passwords as well as authorities.
Add - click this button to add a new user by editing the username, password and authority.
Delete - click this button to remove a user record. Then click Apply or Confirm to delete it
permanently.

2.2.8 Options
This menu is shown as below.

Options/Function allows you to configure different interfaces for different user levels, set hot
keys, and select whether to display submenus or not.

2.2.9 Language
This menu is shown as below.

2.2.9.1 Switch
This option allows you to switch the software interface language between Chinese and English.
2.2.9.2 Edit
This option allows you to edit software interface languages.

Add - type a language name in the above text box and then click this button to add a new
interface language.
Delete - select a language column and then click this button to remove it.
Translate selected - select a row and then click this button to translate the content.
Import translation - select a column of non-Chinese and then click this button to import the
translation.
Translate all - select a column and then click this button to have it translated by the online
translator.
Query - select a column, input your query content and then click this button to obtain the result.
Export (Excel) - exports the field names and their corresponding languages to an Excel file.
Import to Excel - imports field translations from Excel to database.
Save - click to accept the changes.
2.2.10 Help

This button warms up such devices as HV supplier, X-ray tube and detector to let the hardware
reach a stable status.

Buffer time - As the instrument is not stable enough at the beginning of the measurement, there
sets the buffer time, during which the measurement data will be rejected
Match - select the check box if the measurement is conducted under a match condition and
matched with the pre-set spectrum.
2.3.8 Stop
This button stops measurement. It is green in measurement and gray at other time.

Initialize the instrument under pre-set conditions to make the elemental peaks appear on fixed
channels.

The two elements are Ag and Cu by default. Click this button, the prompt "Please place a

standard sample. Ag" will appear. After Ag scanning, you will be prompted to scan Cu.
2.3.11 Calculation
Calculation is a procedure to process spectral data to obtain elemental concentrations.

3.1.2 Switching On

Turn on the system, have a sample in place and then click the icon Warm up. Set Mesurement
time and then click Confirm.

NOTE: It is necessary to warm up the instrument before use when just turned on. Warm up
allows the instrument to enter work state successfully, and thereby ensures stable and
reliable outcomes.

After warm up, the instrument can work normally.

Click Curves on the tool bar or click Curves/Curves from the menu bar to select the working
curve needed for measurement.

NOTE: If you are not sure which curve to use for measurement, you can use the curve
matching function to determine it.
3.1.6 Initialization
Click Initialization on the tool bar. Have the Ag standard placed in the sample chamber
according to the prompt and then click Confirm.

The initialization result will be given to you as below.
NOTE: Initialization is a step of great importance before measurement. It will have all the
devices and element channels in place.
3.1.7 Measurement
After initialization completed successfully, have the sample to be measured in the sample
chamber and then click Start in the tool bar. The following dialog box will appear for you to
enter sample information and measurement parameters.

If the name has already been used by an existed spectrum, the following message will be given.

Click Confirm to replace it and start measurement. Click Cancel to re-enter a sample name.
3.1.8 Report
Click Records on the tool bar allows you to export and print history records.
