Infrawork Road - Design - Workflow
Infrawork Road - Design - Workflow
Autodesk products can work together as a solution. The products can work
seamlessly to support your BIM workflow, either if your industry is
architecture, structure, MEP, or infrastructure.
This booklet will guide you to try the Autodesk infrastructure solution
workflow:
Both products are available in the AEC Collection so that you can get
access to the products with no additional cost.
This test drive workshop only covers the basic, just to help you to
understand how the Autodesk infrastructure workflow can help your
business.

In the search box, type the area of your project. In this test-drive, we use
PART 1: PRELIMINARY DESIGN IN Wanaherang. You may use another area that you prefer.
The model builder now shows the map of your selected area.
1
Scroll your mouse to zoom in to the map. Try to find an area with a river
and existing roads on the map.
1. Change the selection mode to Draw a Rectangle to Select an AOI.
2. Draw the rectangle to define an area
3. Type the model name
You will receive an email when the Model Builder finished the model.
2
InfraWorks asks where do you want to store the model.
After you received the email, you should see your new model in For this test drive, select local.

Type Proposal1 then press Enter.
Review The Model
Your model consists of contour data, imagery, existing roads, and
buildings. The information gives context to your design.
Creating Component Roads
Go to Create tab, Transportation panel, click Component Road.
Detail of the information Review your model depends on the location of
your project.
Navigation Tool
Navigation in the InfraWorks model is a bit different compared to other
Autodesk products.
Examine your model and decide where you want to create a road. Try to The Road stack appears.
connect two existing roads with our new road.
Creating a Proposal
On the top right of InfraWorks, click the proposal dropdown list. Click the
Add button.
4
Place the PI (Point Intersection), as shown above.
5
Modifying Long Section
Click the road once to select it. Right-click and select Show station in
Profile View in the context menu.
If you don’t see the intersection, drag the PI to the centerline to adjust the
position. Make sure the PI is on the centerline.
At the bottom right of the profile stack, make sure the Existing Ground
asset active.
6
Drag the PVI to adjust the elevation.
Drag the vertical marker to examine your profile. You can do it on the map
or the profile stack.
7
Reviewing Cross Sections 1. Change the view mode to cut and fill
With the road selected, right-click and select Show station in Cross Section 2. Drag the marker to move to other stations
View in the context menu. 3. You can also click the arrow to move to the next station
8
Modifying Road Components
We will add several road components to our component road.
InfraWorks shows the preview where you can place the component. Make
sure the component is on the right side of your road. Click to place the
component.
9
After you placed the component, you can drag the grip to change the bus Adding Curb and Shoulder
lane length. We added a bus lane to a part of the road. Now we are going to add
components along the road. Press Esc twice then select the road.
Right-click, then select Insert Road Component from the context menu.
This time select component Curb & Gutter. Make sure you select this
particular type of component.
Place it on the outermost of your road. In the direction that has a bus lane,
place it at the outside of the bus lane.
After you finish, click anywhere to finish adding the bus lane.
10
Your road now should look like this image.
Click the grip to show the input bar. For field align to, set it to Start of
road. And for the other grip, set it to End of road.
11
Creating a Bridge
Examine your model. Find an area that you can add a bridge structure.
After you find the location, select the road. Right-click, then click Add
Structure, Bridge at the context menu.
InfraWorks may take some time to generate the bridge. You will see the
finished bridge in your model.
Define the start and the end station of the bridge by clicking on the road.
12
Creating Drainage Network
InfraWorks can create a drainage network automatically by using an
educated guess approach.
Select the road, right-click then select Drainage, Add Drainage Network
from the context menu.
13
Quantification
Quantify your model and the earthwork in InfraWorks is effortless.
Also, review the drainage network below the road. Click the play button to compute earthwork quantities.
14
Calculating Material Quantities
You can calculate the material quantities by clicking the icon next to the
Earthworks Quantities.
After you click the button, you can see the Material Quantities stack.
15
Simulation
InfraWorks has several analysis tools. We will try using Sight Distance
Analysis. First, let’s prepare our model.
Select the existing road where your component road starts. The existing
road is a planning road. InfraWorks only make an intersection as a
component when component roads intersect. So we need to convert the
existing road first.
Right-click, then click Convert to Component Road. Place the building by drawing a polygon. Double click at the last point to
end creating the building.
Now let’s create a few buildings near the intersection as obstacles. In the
Create tab, under the Structure panel, click Building.
16
Sight Distance Analysis
Activate the Sight Distance Analysis tool. Go to the Analyse tab,
Transportation panel, Sight Distance.
Select the intersection. Click the Analyze button in the Sight Distance
stack.
InfraWorks shows the analysis result in your model.
17
Without traffic control, the intersection doesn’t meet the required
minimum safe distance.

PART 2: DETAILED DRAWING
PRODUCTION IN CIVIL 3D
Civil 3D is a great product to design roads, grading, and other
infrastructure design. However, you’ve spent some time in InfraWorks to
design the road. You can open the InfraWorks model and create the
construction documents in Civil 3D.
Before you import the InfraWorks model, open the model in InfraWorks.
19
Importing InfraWorks Model
Create a new Civil 3D drawing. Before you can import the model, you need
to match the system coordinate first.
If you don’t see the Toolspace, click the button in the Ribbon,
Home tab, Palettes panel
20
The Open InfraWorks Model dialog opens.
21
1 - You can find the InfraWorks model in Documents\ Autodesk InfraWorks
Models.
For terrain surface, make sure only existing ground is selected. And turn
off all Planning Roads. Click OK.
22
Civil 3D also imports the assemblies. You need to zoom in below the
imported map to find it.
23
Make sure the alignment is Datech Crossing, and the profile list has the
Datech Crossing and Existing Ground.
24
Click Draw in profile view.
You are back to Create Profile View dialog. Click Next to review the
settings, but don’t change anything.
Click Create Profile View to place the drawing. Click a point on the right
side of your map. The profile view appears.
In the Profile View Style dialog, Graph tab, change the scale in the custom
scale to 500. If your profile is relatively flat, you can use 100 or 200.
25
Creating Cross Sections Views
The next step is to create the cross sections.
We only have one alignment in this model. When you have more roads, In the Create Sample Line Group dialog, rename the sample line group. It is
you will see more alignment on this list. Select Datech Crossing, then click a good practice to name everything because you can have many objects

stations.
The stations label appears along the road.
27
The Create Multiple Section Views wizard opens. Make sure the correct
alignment and sample line group are selected.
Click Next until Section Display Options page. Change the Label Set. For
existing ground, use EG Section Labels. And for Datech Crossing use
Corridor Point Labels.
28
Click Create Section Views. Place the section views next to the alignment
profile. Zoom in and review the cross sections.
29
Creating Construction Documents
You have created the views, now we can place them into sheets.
30
Civil 3D opens the Sheet Set Manager, double click a sections sheet to Plan Profile Sheets
open it. For plan and profile sheet, there is an initial setting that we must do.
Review the sheets. In the Create View Frames wizard, make sure Datech Crossing is selected.
31
Click Next to review the settings, but don’t change anything. Click Create The Create Sheets dialog appears.
View Frames.
Creating Plan and Profile Sheets You will see the Sheet Set Manager and the Sheets opens.
Go to the Output tab, Plan Production panel. Click Create Sheets.
32
Move the view along Y-axis until you can see the profile view.
If you don’t see the profile in the drawing, you need to move the profile
view. Double click inside the profile view.
