Topic 1 Ethico Moral Aspect of Nursing
Ethics, in general, are the moral principles that dictate how a person will conduct
themselves. Ethical values are essential for ALL healthcare workers, but ethical
principles in nursing are particularly important given their role as caregivers.
Ethical Principles:
Mainly, there are 4 main ethical principles: autonomy, beneficence, justice and
non-maleficence however, it is extend to address different ethical issues.
5. Veracity – means being willing to provide patients with facts, not offering false
reassurances.
It is the concept by which nurses hold themselves and others accountable to demonstrate
competent, accurate patient-centered nursing care. It refers to a nurse's obligation to tell
the truth.
6.Fidelity – refers to the agreement to keep promises, commitments
and responsibilities that one has made oneself and others
Example: if you assess a patient for pain and then offer a plan to manage it, this
principle encourages you to do your best to keep the promise to improve the
patients comfort
Ethical principles in nursing form the foundation that can be used whenever
nurses are confronted with ethical issues and are required to make decisions.
Ethical Dilemma
An ethical dilemma is a situation in which a choice must be made between two equally undesirable actions
Bioethics is a subcategory of ethics. Bioethics addresses ethical concerns like those that
occur as the result of advancing science and technological advances. Some of the most
common, current bioethical issues revolve around stem cells, cloning, and genetic
engineering.
Moral Principles:
1. Golden Rule
2. The principle of Totality – The whole is greater than its parts
3. Epikia – There is always an exemption to the rule
4. One who acts through as agent is herself responsible – (instrument to
the crime)
5. No one is obliged to betray herself – You cannot betray yourself
6. The end does not justify the means
7. Defects of nature maybe corrected
8. If one is willing to cooperate in the act, no justice is done to him
9. A little more or a little less does not change the substance of an act.
10. No one is held to impossible
