Mackers: Act 1 and 2 Creative Assignment

Learning Goals: Students will demonstrate their oral skills through an expressive reading of a soliloquy. They will
demonstrate their understanding of the play and its elements through a chosen creative approach.
For your assignment, you will:
● Choose ONE of the soliloquies from Act 1 or 2 to work with. (Click HERE for tips on how to read it!)
● Choose ONE of the listed assignment choices from below
● Record yourself reading/performing the soliloquies. (cameras only needed for the Actor one).
● Explain your creative process in either written or verbal form.
● Complete any other steps outlined in your chosen assignment.
● Submit ALL steps to your Assignment folder by November 4 (CLOSED DATE: Nov 9)
● Review the RUBRIC and Video Instructions (if needed)

The Artist: Set Design a) Record yourself speaking the soliloquy.(audio only)
b) Design a set that could be used during the soliloquy you have chosen. Use whatever
medium you wish: drawing, 3D model, digital art. Your set can be creative (you can set it in
modern times, for example), so long as it still closely reflects the play. Think about what
colours you will use and why, what set pieces will be there, perhaps you also wish to
represent the character (s) in the chosen soliloquy.
c) You will explain your design choices (colours, layout, set pieces, props, etc.) to me in
either written or verbal form. In approximately 200 words, explain why you represented
the set in this way. Refer to details from your set and tie them in with three quotations
from the play as well as characters, themes, etc.
The Actor: Soliloquy a) Perform a soliloquy (monologue) from the play (Act 1 or 2) and record it on camera. Do
your best to memorize it.
b) Wear a costume appropriate for your character and use props if necessary. Be intentional
about your costume, lighting and set choices.
c) Explain your choices in delivery; why you staged your monologue the way you did, why
you chose that particular costume, prop, etc. Refer to details from your set and tie
them in with three quotations from the play, characters, themes, etc. Your
explanation can be oral or written–aim for approx 200 words.

The Film Designer a) Record yourself speaking the soliloquy. (audio only)
b) Compose a trailer for Acts 1 and 2 of the play. You may experiment with the setting
and text of the play–you may set it in modern times, for example. Be sure that your trailer
includes aspects that introduce themes, images and the sense of tragedy of the original
work. Remember to choose effective music!
c) You will explain your design choices (colours, layout, set pieces, props, etc.) to me in
either written or verbal form. In approximately 200 words, explain why you
represented the set in this way. Refer to details from your set and tie them in with at
least 3 quotations from the play as well as with characters, themes, etc.

The Writer a) Record yourself speaking the soliloquy. (audio only)

b) This task is rather open-ended. It does not have to relate directly to the soliloquy you
chose, but should still reflect the act where it takes place.
c) Write a diary entry (or series of them), OR short story OR script OR poetry OR song
that somehow sheds light on one or two characters’ thoughts and experiences during this
act. Propose an idea to Miss Feick for approval! Aim for your writing to be 500-750
words. If it is a poem, it can be shorter–consult with Miss Feick for specifics.
d) You will explain your writing choices (which format you chose, why you wrote it the way
you did, why you depicted characters in a certain way) to me in either written or verbal
form. In approximately 200 words, explain why you represented the play in this way.
Refer to details from your writing and tie them in with at least 3 quotations from the
play, as well as with characters, themes, etc.
