X Unit 1 - Autotrophic

Autotrophic organisms like plants use sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to produce their own food through photosynthesis. They convert carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates using chlorophyll and sunlight. Starch is produced and stored as a carbohydrate energy reserve. Plants take up carbon dioxide at night to produce intermediates for photosynthesis. Guard cells swell due to water entering when carbon dioxide levels are high. Nitrogen is essential for plant growth and is used to synthesize proteins and other compounds. Photosynthesis produces oxygen from water, not carbon dioxide. The green parts of leaves tested with iodine turn blue-black, indicating presence of starch produced through photosynthesis requiring carbon dioxide.

2. Bio catalysts are also known as:

(a) Enzymes (b) Autotrophs (c) Heterotrophs (d) Excretory tissue

3. Autotrophic organism converts of carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates in the presence of
(a) Sunlight and carbon dioxide  (b) Sunlight and chlorophyll
(c) Carbon dioxide and Nitrogen (d) Chlorophyll and carbon dioxide

4. Following form of energy acts as internal energy reserve for plants

(a) Protein (b) Carbohydrates (c) Starch (d) Fructose

5. Which plants take up carbon dioxide at night and prepare an intermediate?

(a) Desert plants (b) Bamboo (c) Coattails (d) Palm tree

6. The reason for swelling of guard cell is due to the presence of

(a) Sunlight (b) Food (c) Water (d) Carbon dioxide

7. .......... is an essential element used in the synthesis of proteins and other compounds in plants.
(a) Oxygen (b) Water (c) Nitrogen (d) Carbon dioxide

For following below questions from Q. No - 8 to 11, choose the right option from the below
(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) A is true but R is false.
(d) Both A and R are false.

8. Assertion (A) : All the plants possess autotrophic mode of nutrition.

Reason (R) : Due to the presence of green coloured pigment chlorophyll in them.

9. Assertion (A) : Dark phase reactions take place at night.

Reason (R) : Dark phase is independent of light, hence, called light independent phase.

10. Assertion (A) : Destarching of the plant is the first step involved in. one of the photosynthetic
activity to prove light is necessary for photosynthesis.
Reason (R) : This removes stored glycogen present in the plant.

11. Assertion (A) : In stroma, enzymatic reactions synthesise sugar, which in turn forms starch.
Reason (R) : The above set of reactions, since they are directly light driven are called light reactions.
12. The free O2 liberated during photosynthesis comes from-
(a) CO2 (b) H2O (c) Both CO2 & H2O (d) Glucose

13. A few drops of iodine solution were added to destarched plant containing variegated leaf (boiled
in hot water followed by hot alcohol). The green part of plant shows
(a) blue-black colour (b) yellow colour (c) red colour (d) white colour

14. In Photosynthetic process, atmospheric  CO2 is _______ to carbohydrates

(a) oxidised (b) Reduced (c) Neutralised (d) Burnt

15. Insectivorous plants need _______ to make their _______

(a) N2 and proteins (b)N2 and Photosynthesis (c)N2 and carbohydrates (d)N2 and fat

16. Maximum photosynthesis takes place in _______ and minimum in ________ light
(a) Red and Green (b) Green and Red (c) Blue and Red (d) Green and Blue

17. A student sets up an experiment to study the importance of nutrition in plants. The student takes
2 pots, pot 1 and pot 2 each with the same healthy plant. Both the pots were placed in the garden
and watered properly. Pot 1 was kept as such, while pot 2 was kept in an air tight glass box with
caustic soda. Caustic soda absorbs carbon dioxide present in the surrounding. After 2 days, the
student observes that the plant kept in the garden is healthy while the plant placed in container shed
leaves and droops. What is the likely reason for this observation?
(a) lack of nutrients in the soil  (b) absence of oxygen for survival
(c) inability to perform photosynthesis  (d) absorption of light by caustic soda restricting growth

18. A student sets up an experiment to study the photosynthesis in plants. The student de- starched
a potted plant by keeping it in a dark room for 3 days. Half of the portion of de- starched leaf was
placed in a bottle containing caustic potash (absorbs CO2) as shown.

The student then places the plant in light and tests the leaf after 5 hours for the presence of starch.
The portions inside the bottle shows negative starch test by reflecting no change in colour when
react with iodine, however, other upper portions of the leaf gave positive starch test showing blue-
black colour with iodine. What can be evaluated from this experiment?
(a) carbon dioxide is directly linked with the colour of leaf
(b) carbon dioxide is necessary for preparing carbohydrate
(c) lack of carbon dioxide increases amount of starch in plant
(d) lack of carbon dioxide slows the process of photosynthesis
