Academic Performances

This document discusses the challenges faced by scholarship students in pursuing higher education. It begins by introducing the importance of scholarships in enabling students to access education who otherwise could not afford it. However, scholarship students still face various struggles like financial problems, time management issues balancing school and work/family responsibilities, and lack of family support. These challenges can negatively impact students' academic performance and persistence in their studies. The document reviews several related studies that also found financial difficulties, time pressure, and home problems to be significant hurdles for scholarship recipients.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Education is the backbone of success and such as, thousands of students

every year apply for scholarship opportunity. Despite the availability of these

scholarships only a few students are granted the opportunity to receive one. Those

who do however, many benefits in many ways financially, academically and

personally. In the Philippines There are various types of scholarship providers such

as the government, corporation and the school themselves. Merit, skills needs or

context-based in such forms as grant, loans, tuition remission private or institutional

contribute the financial and for higher education (Ganem & Marosse,2011).

However, some studies suggested that financial aids showed a varied effect in

direction and intensity. And across types of aids and characteristics of

students, conducting that it may not work at all times to fullfill its objectives in

promoting success to the higher education institution. This is also shown in the

study of (Cabrera et al, 1992). Including a sample of 466 college students who are

attending a large public institution

The result appears to suggest that financial aid and its concomitant attitude

are important not only because they equalized opportunities between a affluent

and low-income student but also because it facilities the students integration

into the academic and social components of the institution.the components also

influence his or her commitment to stay in college.

This study aims to explore the academic performance between the IPIPP and

CHED SCHOLAR students. The study will highlight whether the opportunity to

receive scholarship leads to academic success or if it leads to students neglecting

or losing focus in their studies such information will aid in creating better policies

for scholarship selection and increase the chance to success for students who

receive a scholarship.

CHAPTER II

THEORETICAL BACKGOUND

Review of related literature the chapter presents a review of related literature

and studies taken from the internet, books and other related references.

Financial support played a statistically significant role in predicting college

Persistence (Robbins ET AL). A students insufficient allowance is one of the leading

problems of college students these days (Galemba,2005;Gegato,2007;Polo,2003).

According to Clifford and john(1982), one of the financial problems relates to the

status of the students family. Family finances may appear to be imposing serious

limitations on a given students educational vocational plans.

The financial burden of college tuition is significant and rising.inlight of the

increasing price of college, education, many families are facing significant challenges

in financing their children's education (Cabala and Gutierrez,2017). This is why

scholarship has been given birth. In the Philippines scholarship for college come in

various programs-entrance scholars, for salutatorian and valedictorian graduates;

academic scholars for those who can maintain grade-based scholastic standing;

sports varsities; externally funded scholarships though government agencies and the

private sector;
Then again, scholars are no excuse of challenges.college life is known to all

as something difficult.it presents the first real challenge to students academic

motivations and skills (Astin,1979). Moreover, college is a stage where students face

myriad of pressures and challenges in the academic environment as they seek to

maintain optimal performances or even to remain in the academic program (Wort

man,2004). For some individuals, college is a high point in their lives where they look

forward to it enjoys it and carries pleasant memories when they graduate.along with

this unforgettable memories are experience filled with anxiety, doubt and struggle

(sears,1964). There are a lot of things that could happen in college and many

demands that should be satisfied (abdullah,2009). According to a study by the bill

and Melinda gates foundation, the main reason why of students dropping out of

college in 2009 was this conflict of interest between school, the job and the family

(Agustin,2020). As charlton and David (1993) puts it, one problem that mostly gives

impact to the emotional problem of the child is the family at home.

Scholarship is one of the obvious advantages of getting rid of economic and

financial, anxiety during the students academic career. Having a scholarship will

allow students to lessen that inevitable financial burden if it cannot be eliminated

(Gross,Hossler,& Ziskin,2007).
The scholars faced time management as they were shooting two (2)

pressures at the same time, their hectic class schedules and maintaining their

grades.this same problem was cited in the study of Guimba, et al (2009). This can be

rooted in the fact that they are torn between school, family needs, and night work-

given that to them the allowance is never enough. Students insufficient allowance is

one of the leading problems of college students (Galemba,2005;Gegato,2007). They

spend a lot for food, fare, photocopy, and the like. Thus, others cannot attend school

regularly and worst, others just decided to drop. According to a study by the Bill and

Melinda Gates foundations, the main reason why of students dropping out of college

in 2009 was this conflict of interest between school, the job and the family. In

according to times higher education in Germany, one (1) out of four (4) college

students broke off their studies early due to financial problems.these situations

hampered them from participating in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities,

joining school-based organizations, and volunteering in community-based

programs.with the bulk of requirements that each course required them it became

harder on their part to beat deadline given time, financial, and gadget/technological

limitations. These data are found to be similar in the study of zabala and

guitierrez(2017).

As Charlton and David (1993) puts it, one problem that mostly given impact to

the emotional problem of a child is the family at home.at times, the scholars lost the

appetite of continuing their studies with thought in mind that they do not get holistic

support from their respective homes. It finds congruency in the study of Berowa

(1988) as cited by Abo and Tawacal (2001) revealed that home and family problems

appear to be a dominant cause for failures of the children.

It could have an absolute effect on the academic motivation of the students,

especially, in a case then the sustainability of the scholarship depends on student

academic success. Therefore such a student needs to maintain a scholarship in the

short term or allows the payment of loans in the longer term.A scholarship could

strengthen a students integration into the community, if the form of provisions such

as work-study or athletic scholarship leads the student to connect with a huge

number of individuals across university ground (Adelman,2006).

In situations when the teachers delay the submission of grades, the students

clamor for consideration, in order for them to receive their scholarship allowance on

time. But no to avail, no consideration was made. The same scenario was actually

felt by the research participants of Zabalaand Gutierrez (2017). Data showed that the

respondents were challenged on the late issuance of their scholar fund support from

the sponsoring agency, late submission of grades delayed them to claim their fund

support, and tedious preparing of documents challenged the scholars.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter show the research method use and discuss several things such

as research design, respondent of the study, research locale, research instrument,

data gathering procedure.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The researcher will use the descriptive method which involved the collection

of data in order to answer questions concerning the current status of the subject of

the study. This research focuses on the academic performance of IPIPP & CHED

scholar at the ESSU Can-avid Campus and determine the relationship between

academic performance and academic challenges.

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The respondents of this study was all the IPIPP and CHED scholar in Eastern

Samar State University Can-Avid from 1st year to 4th year. There are one hundred

sixty four (164) respondents to the survey.

RESEARCH LOCALE

The researcher will conduct their studies at the Eastern Samar State

University Can-Avid Campus (ESSU CAN- AVID) since the researcher studying in

the said school. ESSU is a public external campus operating the Eastern Samar

State University system.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

Before conducting our study a written permission is thought from the head of

scholarship office. When the permission is granted, we will start the process on

collecting the needed information data. The researcher were asking all the members

of the IPIPP & CHED scholar students.

The survey questionnaires will be administering through personal distribution,

cellphone communication, sending through email address, and Facebook to inform

the respondents about the purpose of the study. The respondents will be able to

understand that their honest responses will greatly help the researcher to come up

the valid & accurate findings.

After interview, the responses of the respondents were going to be tallied,

accurately computed and objectively interpreted.
