Equations of Motion Ws

This document contains a worksheet on equations of motion with 10 questions. It reviews the three main equations of motion - the relationship between velocity, acceleration, time and displacement. Students are asked to use the equations to solve problems related to the motion of objects like cars, rockets, divers and balls rolling down ramps. They are to show the steps and calculations to determine values like acceleration, velocity, time and distance traveled.

Worksheet on Equations Of Motion

Name: Mayana Agarwal Date: 5/8/22
SOI- Understanding the relationships between movement of objects with respect to space and time has
improved human’s way of living.
LEARNING GOAL – To solve the questions based on equations of motion.
Equations of Motion:
There are three equations of motion that can be used to derive components such as displacement(s),
velocity (initial and final), time(t) and acceleration(a). The following are the three equations of
motion:
i. v = u + at.
ii. v² = u² + 2as.
iii. s = ut + ½at²
Solve the following numerical by showing complete steps and do mention the unit.

Q1. A car starts from rest and accelerates uniformly for 8.0 s. It reaches a final speed of 16 m s –1.
a Calculate the acceleration of the car?

A = 16-0/8
= 2ms-2

b Calculate the average velocity of the car?

V = 0 + 2(8)
= 16ms-1

c Calculate the distance travelled by the car.

s = 0*8 + ½ * 2*82
= 64m

Q2. A new model BMW can start from rest and travel 400 m in 16 s.
a Calculate its average acceleration during this time?

S = ut + ½ at2

400 = 0+16 + ½ a* (162)

a = 3ms-2

b Calculate the final speed of the car.

PSG/MYP /YEAR- 4/PHYSICS/MECHANICS/WS/VK/AD/KS/2022 1

3 = v-0/16
V = 48ms-1

c Calculate how fast is this final speed in km h–1?

Final speed in ms-1 = 48

Final speed in h-1 = 48*3600/1000
= 172.8h-1

Q3. A space-rocket is launched and accelerates uniformly from rest to 160 m s–1 in 4.5 s.
a Calculate the acceleration of the rocket.
A = 160-0/4.5
A = 35.6ms-2

b Calculate how far does the rocket travel in this time?

S = 0*4.5 + 1/2 * 35.6* (4.52)
S = 360.45m

c Calculate the final speed of the rocket in km h–1?

Final speed in ms-1 = 160

Final speed in h-1 = 160*3600/1000
= 576h-1

Q4. A diver plunges head first into a diving pool while travelling at 28.2 m s–1 (u). Upon entering
the water, the diver stops within a distance of 4.00 m (s) from the diving board. Consider the diver
to be a single point located at her centre of mass and assume her acceleration through the water
to be uniform.
a Calculate the average acceleration of the diver as she travels through the water.’
2a * 4 = – 795.24
2a = -795.24/4
= -198.81
a = -99.4ms-2
b Calculate how long does the diver take to come to a stop?
-99.4 = -28.2/t
99.4 = 28.2/t
T = 2803
c Calculate the speed of the diver after she has dived for 2.00 m.
v2-u2 = 2as
v2 = 397.62
v = 19.94ms

Q5. When does a car have the greatest ability to accelerate and gain speed: when it is moving
slowly or when it is travelling fast? Explain.

PSG/MYP /YEAR- 4/PHYSICS/MECHANICS/WS/VK/AD/KS/2022 2

- The car has the greatest ability to accelerate and gain speed when it is moving slowly
because, when the speed is less there is higher possibility to accelerate or gain speed,
whereas if the speed is already fast then the possibility decreases. For example, there are
two cars, one is moving at 20km, second is moving at 80km, if a car is going to run at
180km, then the car moving slowly will have a gain of 160km whereas the car moving fast
will only have 100km. Hence, a car has the greatest ability to accelerate and gain speed
when it is moving slowly

Q6. A stone is dropped vertically into a lake. Which one of the following statements best
describes the motion of the stone at the instant it enters the water?
A Its velocity and acceleration are both downwards.
B It has an upwards velocity and a downwards acceleration.
C Its velocity and acceleration are both upwards.
D It has a downwards velocity and an upwards acceleration.

Q7. A cyclist, whilst overtaking another bike, increases his speed uniformly from 4.2 m s–1 to
6.3 m s–1 over a time interval of 5.3 s.
a Calculate the acceleration of the cyclist during this time.

A = 6.3-4.2/5.3
A = 0.39ms-2

b Calculate how far does the cyclist travel whilst overtaking?

S = 4.2*5.3 + ½ 0.39*(5.32)
= 27.73m

c Calculate the average speed of the cyclist during this time?

S = d/t
S = 27.73/5.3
S = 5.23

Q8. A car is travelling along a straight road at 75 km h–1. In an attempt to avoid an accident, the
motorist has to brake to a sudden stop.
a Calculate the car’s initial speed in m s–1?

75km h-1 into ms-1

75*1000/3600
20.83ms-1

b If the reaction time of the motorist is 0.25 s, Calculate what distance does the car travel while
the driver is reacting to apply the brakes?

PSG/MYP /YEAR- 4/PHYSICS/MECHANICS/WS/VK/AD/KS/2022 3

A = v-u/t
A = -250/3ms-2

S = ut + ½ at2
S = 2.60m

c Once the brakes are applied, the car has an acceleration of –6.0 m s–2. Calculate how far does
the car travel while pulling up?

v² = u² + 2as
0 = 752 + 2*-6*s
S = 468.75m

Q9. A billiard ball rolls from rest (u) down a smooth ramp that is 8.0 m long (s) . The acceleration
of the ball is constant at 2.0 m s–2 (a)
a Calculate the speed of the ball when it is halfway down the ramp?

v² = u² + 2as
v2 = 2*2*4
v = 4ms

b Calculate the final speed of the ball?

v² = u² + 2as
v2 = 2*2*8

v = u + at
t = 2s

d How long does the ball take to travel the final 4.0 m?
v = u + at
t = 0.825s

Q10. A cyclist is travelling at a constant speed of 12 m s –1 (v) when he passes a stationary bus.
The bus starts moving (u=0) just as the cyclist passes, and accelerates at 1.5 m s –2 (a)
a When does the bus reach the same speed as the cyclist?

PSG/MYP /YEAR- 4/PHYSICS/MECHANICS/WS/VK/AD/KS/2022 4

v = u + at.
12 = 1.5*t
T = 8s

b How long does the bus take to catch the cyclist?

c Calculate the distance has the cyclist travelled before the bus catches up?
