1.0 Introduction To Numerical Methods PDF

The document outlines the objectives and topics of an Advanced Engineering Mathematics course on numerical methods, which includes understanding foundational numerical techniques, solving systems of equations, and applying methods to differential equations to model engineering systems both analytically and numerically. The introduction discusses that numerical methods provide approximate solutions to complex engineering problems that cannot be solved analytically by converting them into computable forms using approximation theories and techniques.

Numerical Methods - Introduction

• Many real-world engineering problems are

governed by mathematical equations that cannot
be solved using analytical methods.
• Majority of these problems can be converted into
computable forms (discretized) using fundamental
ideas in approximation methods or theories.
• These methods include interpolation,
extrapolation, curve fitting and integration
techniques solving non-linear equations, systems
of linear equations and differential equations
Numerical Methods - Introduction

• So what is numerical methods?

– These are methods that are employed to

provide approximate solutions to complex
engineering problems.
