"Masque of the Red Death"
Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849), a classic of American literature, is a poet, a master of small prose forms, a
pioneer of detective and horror literature. The writer wrote grotesques, short stories, satires, parodies,
mystifications. In his works, you can see elements of love, horror, and mysticism. Using wit and irony, the
author exposes the 19th century. the spiritlessness of society.
The Masque of the Red Death is one of Edgar Allan Poe's most famous works. The novel was published in
1842. and is still considered one of the better works of the writer.
"And the unbridled reign of Darkness, Rot, and the Red Death reigned"
This novel tells the story of Prince Prospero, whose country is plagued by a terrible epidemic of the Red
Death. To avoid the disease, the prince and his friends and servants lock themselves in the prince's abbey,
leaving everyone else in the country to die agonizing death. Thinking that the isolated monastery is safe,
they stage a masquerade. The prince and his friends are having fun while the Red Death ravages and
destroys everything outside the monastery. After the masquerade begins, an uninvited guest dressed as the
Red Death appears at the ball, the guest himself appears and brings a brutal death to every person in the
hall. Like several E. A. After reading the works, a scary and disturbing atmosphere is created, this work is no
different. The main theme in the work is death, and humanity's desire to avoid it as well as madness. The
short story contains several very important symbols, one of them - the abbey symbolizing the course of life
of seven different men.
The work perfectly adapts the meanings of colors together with the concept of the flow of life. As an
example, the first art can be used - it is blue, which symbolizes life, birth and hope. Meanwhile, the very last
seventh arte is dark red and black, these colors often symbolize death, suffering, fear. In the short story, the
main problem is people's stupidity, it is a reflection of our current society, especially rich people who think
that having money makes them invincible, and in the case of the short story, they are immortal. In my
opinion, the only problem with the piece is the overly complicated metaphors. E. A. Poe is known for his
ingenious metaphors, but I think there were too many of them in a few places. The grotesque atmosphere
becomes confusing, because you start to "lose" the creation and thinking of the work due to the complex
metaphors.
In my opinion, The Masque of the Red Death is a truly outstanding piece of literature. E.A.'s writing style is
elegant and serious, and the idealism behind it to create a sense of unease is second to none.
All in all, I would highly recommend Masque of the Red Death to anyone who enjoys the horror genre. It's a
chilling and thought-provoking story that will stay with you long after you've finished reading it.
